i'm in the "Yard Switching" part of the tutorial and it's saying to set the coupler to unlocked, and the indicator is at the top of the car, but there's nothing there, and i can't find where to click/interact to decouple the train and the cars.

There is a lever at the end of the car to release the coupling, not where the indicator is :)

Just look around between the two cars at eye level you will see a big lever (yellow?)

    Greetings!

As already stated by previous posters, you should look for the coupling lever. Its not obvious sometimes, especially when you first see unfamilliar rolling stock. In those cases just move your mouse cursor all around beetween car/loco to find something switchable :D
    Cheers!

Helpful hint: use the locomotive's uncoupling lever, not the car's or else the loco coupler stay in the locked position and you won't be able to hook up to the next group of cars.

However, if you expect in the scenario later to re-attach the cars you are uncoupling, unlock the levers on both the car and the loco.

It looks like it's part of the steps - a world away from what the indicator points to. Climb down the steps then look back at them and your mouse will pick up the coupler. I had at LEAST half an hour pulling out my hair, while trying to find this!! Grrrr.
