So the tutorials are kind of trash. There’s a lot of stuff not explained. All of these question pertain to the sand patch. One question I have is, there are three different brakes, is there a certain situations that you should use one brake over another. Second question, what does the sand button do. Third question, I have a bunch of blinking zeros on a box that’s above a radio. One says psi I don’t remember what the other one says. Are those supposed to be blinking zero. Fourth question, how do you set up the lights correctly( short hood vs long hood). Sorry that there are so many questions. But none of these are explained and there are very limited videos that are not very helpful on YouTube.

Welcome to the forums, Underbreadbore :D

I'll start with the brakes by quoting a rough guide I wrote a few days or weeks ago:

    Auto brake

    Dynamic brake
    Independent brake
For your other questions: The sander sprays sands in front of the wheels on your loco. This increases adhesion in adverse weather conditions but should be used sparingly. This is correctly simulated in TSW but don't expect it to perform miracles.

    As to this:
Sounds like your seeing the HoTD (head of train device) which should display the pressure in the brake pipe at the rear end of the train as sent via radio by the EoTD (end of train device - the blinking red thing at the end of the train). You don't need to worry about the zeros, they're probably just part of the radio - the psi reading is the important bit.

For your last question about how to set up the lights correctly, I'll once again quote something I wrote some time ago:
Hope this helps you a bit and is not just an impenetrable wall of text :D

Thank you for your input. It helps out a lot. Next question. Should I be driving the front loco or back loco when they are hooked up together. Or does it matter. Also which end is the hood. I assume the short hood is the short side and the long is the long side where the engine is located.

You should be in the loco at the front or in other words the one with the cab pointing in the direction you‘re going.

You assume correctly. Looking at the profile of a loco, you can see that the cab is a lot closer to one end of the loco than to the other. The short end is called the short hood or nose, the long end is the long hood. If we apply this terminology to your query above, you should be driving from the loco which runs short hood/nose forwards.

Well that helps a lot. So then why does the game start you in the trail loco while you’re doing the journey. Also why is there a person in the trail loco. I only have experience in the GP38-2. Haven’t made it far enough in the game for the other locos yet.

Ah, that clears some things up. While switching, it doesn‘t really matter that much what loco you‘re in. Preferably, sit in the loco closer to the cars so that you can see more clearly what‘s going on while coupling. My comments on what loco to sit in were based on running trains on the main line, not switching :)

Just to clear this up in case you‘re unaware: You can always do what you want in the game. If you go to Sand Patch Grade -> Explore -> Timetable in the main menu, you can choose which loco and which service you want to run. Though if you prefer journey mode, nothing wrong with that either :D

Here is the thing that was blinking with zeros. But now that I understand it more it’s because I was using the trail logo and setting it up as the lead or dead. Instead of using the actual short hood or nose to drive with. Lol. This game is so weird for the tutorials that it gives you in the situation that put you in at start.

That‘s indeed the HoTD as described above.

[/ QUOTE]
First of all, on the three brakes. You should take a look at the controls in the game settings, but if you have playstation they alternate on the square button and yes, they can be superimposed. Mainly, you take the dynamics, which is basically the engine brake, you can and must complement with the automatic, which is what is used to brake the train. As for the third: - the independent is usually used when driving only the locomotive, however it can be complemented with the automatic one if you have little space to brake and carry a lot of weight, (in a red signal for example). the zeros have nothing to do with it, but the first yellow button on the right is to complement the push forces with the other locomotives. I honestly did not look for the lights. but all this I found in the manual. I don't know which manual did you read ?????

    Sand Patch has a manual:

    (starts on p.25)
