Today I ´'m going to suggest my local route for TSW3, the Helsinki Metro. Helsinki Metro is a 43 km long metro system which runs from southern Espoo through Helsinki city centre to eastern Helsinki. It is the northernmost metro system in the world. The gauge of the system is 1522 mm. In total, Helsinki Metro has 30 stations. 20 stations are underground. In Itäkeskus the line splits into two branches. The line between Kivenlahti and Sörnäinen is completely underground. The line between Kalasatama and Mellunmäki is completely overground, while Vuosaari branch has a short underground section. There are two depots in Helsinki Metro. The original metro depot is located in Roihupelto nearby Itäkeskus station. Recently, when the big Helsinki Metro extension project called West Metro (fin. Länsimetro) was completed, a new depot was opened at Sammalvuori in Espoo, which is located nearby Kivenlahti, the western terminus of the line. Every station is named in Finnish and Swedish. The original Helsinki Metro ran between Ruoholahti and Vuosaari/Mellunmäki. The West Metro extension project started in 2009, which added 13 new stations into the line. 11 new stations are located in the city of Espoo. The first phase of this extension project was completed in 2017. Then a line between Ruoholahti and Matinkylä started to operate. The second phase between Matinkylä and Kivenlahti was completed in December 2022. Although there are two official lines in Helsinki Metro, there is actually only one line which splits into two small branches at Itäkeskus. Both lines share the same line from Itäkeskus towards west. The line M1 runs between Kivenlahti and Vuosaari, and the line M2 runs between Tapiola and Mellunmäki. Orange line is Helsinki Metro, purple is commuter rail. Rolling stock There are currently 3 types of rolling stoch running on Helsinki Metro. Every train is 4 car long. The newest trains are 4 car long, while the older tarins are 2 car long and two trains are coupled into 4 car tarins. The trains used to be 6 car long but because the stations of the West Metro were too short for 6 car long trains, the length was shortened to 4 cars. Included in the route: M100 The M100 is the oldest train of the Helsinki Metro. It is build by Finnish Valmet and Srömberg between 1977 and 1984. This train has enclosed cars, which means that passengers are not able to change car during the journey. A major refurbishment was recently made for M100 sets, when PIS screens and interiors were fully renewed. The M100 trainsets used to be the very first EMU trains in the world which were fitted with VVVF motors. This train is known for it's traction motor sound (which is quite similar to BR class 323 sound). M300 The newest trainset of Helsinki Metro is M300 which was built by CAF between 2014 and 2022. This train contains 4 cars, while other trainsets contain 2 cars. M300 is possible to be automated in future. As loco DLC: M200 The M200 trainsets were built for Helsinki Metro by Bombardier Transportation between 2000 and 2001. The total number of M200 sets is significantly smaller than M100 and M300 sets. That's why I suggest it as loco DLC. The M200 sets are going to be refurbished in upcoming months.
Nopes. That's a bit too much underground for me. Biggest disadvantage of the Bakerloo line IMO. Wouldn't want another underground route. It gets boring quickly.
Bring it on and for DTG can they Handle the Bilingual Finnish and Finland Swedish language signs found on the Helsinki Metro or not? Track Gauge is 1.520m seen in the former Russian Empire and Soviet Union. Some depots have national rail connection
This would be very interesting because of the fact that the stations west of Ruoholahti are new and modern while the other ones are a bit older!
