Buckingham Palace has made a very unusual and grim statement regarding the Queen's health; the Royal Family is gathering at Balmoral.

Certainly disconcerting. At first I thought it's not the first time she's been ill but hearing that the Royal Family is gathering isn't exactly encouraging. Hoping she gets better but if the rest of her family has been summoned to be with her, it's not a good sign.

As the BBC pointed out, the palace wouldn't announce that her doctors were "concerned" unless they were VERY concerned.

I too saw this on my news and it is very sad to hear and like you say it's not looking good if the whole family are up in Balmoral.

Sobering to think that when she ascended the throne, the PM was Winston Churchill.

The vast majority of people in the UK have never known a King. The National Anthem is going to take some getting used to.

Saw this on MSNBC Chris Jansing Reports all the way to Katy Tur.
She was in a video call with Biden and then left to do her Speech about the death of Queen Elizabeth II and there PM Truss said the King's name King Charles III
    .
    RIP

I’ve had quite a few tears whilst trying to drive my bus this evening.

It’s so sad to think that on Tuesday, when that lovely photo was taken of her waiting to meet Liz Truss, she was dying, but still carried on regardless.

Such a wonderful women. The world has lost a beacon of light.

She was the head of state for our country for 70 years. A job she didn't choose, a job which she did with honour and integrity. She may have had great wealth, but she had less personal freedom than you or I. She couldn't blurt out garbage on a forum like you have done. She couldn't just nip down the pub or down the shops.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, freedom of speech and all that, but there's a time and a place and this thread is neither!

Rest in piece, Her Majesty. And God save the King.

I‘m not entirely familiar with the period of mourning that has commenced now, but I intend to follow all the news and events closely since this is clearly a very rare occasion (last time a coronation happened was more than 15 years before my dad was born!).
A golf tournament near London I was watching earlier got shut down and presumably cancelled. What about the ordinary people? Will employees (like game developers) be required to work during the period of mourning?

While republicans and anti-royalists are entitled to their views, today is not the day for that. If you fall into that category, perhaps this isn't the thread for you.

It is not unreasonable to ask that this thread be used for those who wish to mark their respects.

I can’t have that feeling of having a monarch as it’s kinda a tradition to guillotine them as the last emperor wasn’t like that much and we decide to switch to a republican regime but personally I prefer a monarchy and Elizabeth II stood magnificently for 70 years what a success ! I think she mostly died of sorrow of the loss of Philip. Adieu to the Queen.

Awful news. When the news broke I instantly had goosebumps and what I can only describe as an outer body experience, that feeling where you can't tell if this is real or a dream. Thoughts are with everyone grieving at this time.

It does feel like a last link to another age has gone. It seems quite a shock that only two days before whilst looking frail she was smiling and looked relatively well. I have always been fond of the Queen but it hit me more than I expected. I think someone who was ever present and a symbol of stability has gone and suddenly everything seems very strange this morning. It is wonderful to see that not just in the UK or the Commonwealth are people saddened, but many across the world who have no connection with her whatsoever, it says a lot about her and her impact.

As said above, it is quite some adjustment to have a King instead of a Queen. I was reading about the courts opening today and all the changes and it occurred to me that even QCs are no more. I don't think we will see a reign like this one in our lifetime and I suspect the state funeral will be some occasion, one not to be missed, even by our republican friends. I am sure you can separate the person from the role, and she was a good person.

I was flicking through youtube and saw one on the Eiffel Tower, they switched the lights off in memory to Queen Elizabeth II's passing. Hit me more than I thought it would. Thank You France.

I was shocked why the Eiffel Tower was switched off as I was coming home from work then I quickly understand when I looked at the news. Many fallen flags on some place are done to pay respect. In Paris there’s a famous market of flowers established at the very beginning of the 19th and was renamed by adding her name at her last visit in France in June the 7th of 2014:

Yeah, I always thought what a good Queen, Kate would make or would she be Queen consort? I really hope Charles steps up to the plate.
