The most practical one is to navigate to where TSC is installed (Steam: browse local files),
then right click RailWorks64.exe and use Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
That's not a Steam shortcut but it works just as fine. I'd advise against the x86 and D12 versions until further research.
You may also want to have some kind of FPS limiting in place. If you have Nvidia, choose either frame limiting or vertical sync.
You likely also want to set the game to Borderless Windowed (which may cripple v-sync so set frame limiting).

Ty, I did play around clicking on things and I managed to get a desktop start, I selected Window mode as I like to pause sometimes and go to desktop but when it opened in was a small screen and the enlarge was greyed out, so then selecte full screen.
I will look at the other things you mentioned as well.
I also looked for some kind of training mode as a beginner but couldn't see anything.
I have RailDriver controller, I selected that in the settings but it isn't doing anything, so I noted down the keyboard keys to control things.

If you use Windowed mode there is a chance the game will crash - Use Borderless.

The problem with RailDriver it was designed for US Locos where they all drive in a very similar mode.
German and UK Locos are quite different, most don't have the Dynamic Brakes found in the US.

There is some software by a chap Cobra One but I'm not sure where you download it
It allows you to set up a file for the type of train you are driving

    mindenjohn might know?

Ah thanks 006, I'm still having probs using the keyboard, I went on settings and selected 'Keyboard' but still some keys not accepted, especially the spped A and D I'm using the mouse and it is a bit awkward at times.
Just done my 2nd run and again got a bad report lol. It's a shame because I like it but this is spoiling it for me.

If you haven't, check the Academy tutorials from the main screen.
It teaches the basics on how to drive. One of them is simple vs expert controls, but of course all the other stuff.
As a newbie I think it's best to drive really simple trains, regardless of their visual quality.
Ideally DTG would supply the old RailWorks content - 5-8 routes, 2 asset packs - for free by now, so you would learn the basics there.
(People would eat me for recommending to buy them.)
Many trains tried to be a little more on the simulation side which may mean that you need to unlock the handles, etc.
There is a Manuals folder in your TSC installation, it's worth checking out, maybe what you're trying to drive is more advanced.
It may sound silly, but it's part of why I didn't start TSW. Instead of learning gradually, here is the 166, perform these 10 steps to start up, etc.

Ha Ha yes, I've been on some in TSW4 thar ask you to unlock this or that but I can't find them and that is in training mode,
I said in that mode if it asks you to activate something it should highlight it instad if you don't know where to look you are all over the cab clicking on things.

You don't really need a desktop shortcut. And Steam now has the habit of displaying the "custom arguments" requester when not launched through the client.

Steam offers a recently played menu here, no need to clutter your desktop. Just click the tray icon.

Key mapping in TSC is the same for most locos & units - but there are some variations
In your Railworks Folder is "Manuals" which stores all your manuals for the game.
Have a look to see if there is a train you are having a problem with.

Possibly redundant now, but I have two desktop shortcuts - one each for the 32 and 64 bit versions of the program.
I use the 32 bit version for route building, but that is perhaps a hangover from issues that are no longer present regarding track editing in 64 bit?

Imho there's no reason to use the restricted memory 32-bit version. There's a few freeware signals out there that only work in 32bit that I heard of. I have no use for the 32bit exe anymore so no shortcut for me. Steve and team have done a proper job, and v75.8a is the most stable version to date.
