So, I made some AI related posts before, so I know people generally dislike AI. Apparently companies like Open AI need such a ridiculous amount of hardware for their data centers, its hurting the consumer market. Take a NVIDIA RTX 5090 for example, I bought one for just over 3000 euros in July last year when I got my new PC. Right now the cheapest ones are around the 4K mark. Don't know if anyone on here was planning to buy a new PC this year, if you are you better safe up some more, or wait it out. Edit to add: " Why it's happening: The massive demand for AI infrastructure has caused tech companies to buy up available high-end memory supplies, creating a severe shortage. This has pushed memory prices to unprecedented levels, which directly impacts GPU manufacturing costs since modern GPUs use substantial amounts of high-speed memory. Looking ahead: Reports suggest prices could continue climbing, with some sources speculating the 5090 could reach $5,000 later in 2026, though this hasn't been confirmed by NVIDIA and some analysts are skeptical of such extreme increases." Spoiler: 5090 prices from a well known Dutch store
I just helped my Dad get new laptops for himself and my stepmum and for them I got them to go for last year's models. The price difference to this year's models was already quite ridiculous. I also hate the way AI is being forced on us. Microsoft increased my office subscription to include co pilot (and only reduced it when I threatened to cancel). Then today my ROG Ally updated with Gaming copilot beta with the option to share data switched on by default. I will only use AI as an assistant to help me be more efficient in my job. I don't want it in any leisure product where it detracts from creativity. The faster the bubble bursts the better from my point of view. Maybe I'm just getting too old!
