We'll have a Jubilee pulling a railtour on the West Cornwall route in the WCSS pack. But do note a few points - Penzance is a terminal station. So, the tracks don't go any further. Also, I don't see any turntable or a 'Wye' track in the vicinity. So how are we supposed to turn the Jubilee around, facing the correct way for the return journey ?
Probably by magic! The route is pure fantasy anyway. It is as unbelieveable as it is seeing a class 40 (last in BR service in 1985 and they never ran in the South West) with a rake of blue/grey early mark 2's (largely extinct in this livery by the early 1990's and certainly then not or very rarely used on intercity services) running without a brake vehicle (against regulations at the time). The Jubilee looks lovely and I might be tempted to get it. Another case of a backdated route lacking in substance and realism.
I know they have Gronks doing Pilots in the station but thats from NTP isn't it? If they had some way I wouldn't be against some tender first running though I also really like the look of the Jubilee and might have to dip into that. The LMS livery is beautiful and its great it now has aws etc
Well it can always just run backwards, can it not? I believe they used to do that if there was nowhere to turn the locomotive around.
I am worried I know the answer to that - they mention four services on the route, so I think the consist will be on one of the Penzance sidings at the beginning of the timetable. service 1: Depot to Penzance service 2: to Truro and off to the portal service 3: portal to Truro and to Penzance service 4: back to the depot The timetable ends with the train stashed there the wrong way, and when it resets, the train is then again facing the correct way... YAAAY, magic...
It probably would have run to St Blazey where I believe there is still a turntable. Of course the route didn't quite get there.
That is likely about right. This route really should have gone to Plymouth, St. Austell is another strange stopping point.
There will probably be 2 consists available, one running tender first. However, I'm not sure how ECS movements would work for people who don't have NTP, to get the loco on the other side in Penzance, unless there is also included some diesel loco in this package.
Getting up that long grade would be my biggest worry! Already played a scenario available from train sim community and it takes some fiddling to make it up without stopping!
I would assume a 37 that is included with the route would be coupled to the rear or at least coupled up at Penzance to drag it back to the depot or even to the portal at St Austell. Or maybe the steam engine will run light engine back to the portal as an ai service. Who knows with Rivet.
Yeh there’s a reason not many steam tours go to Penzance Most finish at Exeter or Plymouth with a diesel taking them on to Par or Penzance.
the railtour on WCL will also use the included 37. Timetable was already included in the game for some time now
They used to run the loco's up to St Blazey / Par and turn them around on the turntable there. Now I think might go up to Plymouth Laira depot.
The last steam tour to go further west than Paignton did just that. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland came off at Plymouth whilst a diesel took the coaches into Cornwall.
The 'Jacobite', WCR's regular summer railtours between fortwilliam and mallaig run tender first one way.
That was my guess too, maybe there are both variations. Lol what a railtour if people need to wait until the jubilee comes back from the st.blazey turntable.
Some alternative theories to those already suggested: 1) The first service is out of Penzance in the morning and returns there in the evening having turned around while off-map 2) The Jubilee that arrives into Penzance is not the same one that returns - perhaps there's another loco waiting facing the right way in the Penzance depot to take the train back out again (perhaps that's why it's coming with more than one livery) Additionally we may get some railtour services that go St Austell - Truro and then head off-map toward Falmouth.
Why wouldn't they just do it how it's done in rl with a diesel on the back and return under diesel power?
I mean that would technically work, but you need to consider that when somebody's paying for a locomotive they're probably expecting to use that locomotive. Having half your runs not even using the loco you paid for when there's already so few isn't gonna be looked upon well, especially by those who don't know much about real life operations.
It is a new/revamped version of it in preservation guise not just a sub of the SOS one. I would imagine that even if diesel assisted, a steam railtour running to Penzance would then see the loco going to St Blazey to be turned. I assume it is supposed to be subbing in as if it was running in the early 1990's I don't know how differently steam railtours were run then, if they were different at all. I think we all know how realistic a representation of early 90's Cornwall the route is so I am sure they will use prototypical operations!
Back then I don't think they had to be assisted, unless there was no way to turn it around but probably was allowed to run backwards. I didn't know it was gonna be a pay for dlc! Or pay for re paint anyway. What a pity I was looking forward to it.
You can still look forward to it but you will have to pay to get it. You may want to look at the roadmap to see more about it. I have a feeling the trains in this DLC will be used in future railtours as they have all the modern requirements fitted.
It might be like the RHTT pack and layer into anything suitable. I will wait to see the price and scope before I decide, it does look nice however. Although a five coach load is not really realistic for a steam railtour.
I'm thinking the same. I'll be intrigued to see where they go for price point. Because the crimson livery looks beautiful and I'm sure the black one does too. Plus I think it'll be the go to for railtours now surely?
The 5 coach rake shown in the pictures in the roadmap completely puts me off - I won’t be buying it if that’s how it’s released. Rail tours run with much heavier loads than that (they have to in order to make money) and it’s far too light a load for there to be any interest in the running, with a loco with the power of a Jubilee. There’ll be no challenge whatsoever getting up the banks or managing boiler pressure. Hopefully someone will make it possible to sub in an SOS formation with a sensible number of coaches.
With all the issues DTG and their companions have had doing things in a timely manner even when it was explicitly said to be happening I wouldn't be making any assumptions. And frankly even if they do add more content in the future by the time they do that it will have came down in price, I see zero benefit in grabbing it at launch.

How are we going to turn the steam rail tour around in Penzance due to the lack of Turntable. What the railtour pack needs is LMS 2-6-2T Ivatt Arthur or 4MT Belle type
Although tank engines have been used on steam railtours in the recent past I doubt one would make it into West Cornwall as they have less water carrying capacity. If either of those were added the SOS would probably benefit from them.
I'm certain that someone had managed to find the services for the Steam Railtour in the files a while ago, I can't remember if it was posted here or on the TSCommunity Discord. I can't find the post anymore, so this will be entirely from memory and as such may be completely wrong, but as far as I can remember the services went something along the lines of: - AI Steam Railtour between St Austell portal and St Austell - Playable Steam Railtour service between St Austell and Penzance - AI class 37 light engine between St Austell portal and Penzance, couples to rear of steam Railtour - class 37 drags the steam railtour (loco facing backwards) back to the St Austell portal (no idea if this is player driven or AI only) <later in the day> - class 37 drags a (different?) steam railtour (with the engine facing the other way) from St Austell to Penzance (again, may be AI only, might not be) - class 37 decouples from steam railtour at Penzance - Playable Steam Railtour between Penzance and St Austell - AI Steam Railtour to the St Austell Portal - AI class 37 light engine Penzance to St Austell portal Now, if this is the case, A. That's an odd choice for the service pattern imo B. that would only be 2 playable steam-hauled services. If the Class37 drags were also playable services then that would bring the number of new playable services up to the advertised 4, so it would be plausible but with only two of the four services being steam hauled Again, this is just my brain trying to remember something it saw at least a month ago, so might not be completely accurate, but I think this is a plausible service pattern
That would make sense. Hopefully there is more to it as it’s pretty unimaginative. You could make this in scenario planner apart from the coupling up.
