    Introduction

Hi, welcome to another post in my series "Improving Lineside Industry". I'm going to be looking at various routes in Train Sim World and highlighting what we have, and what we could have, in regard to railways that serve the various industries along them. I find these to be very interesting, and I think maximizing opportunities for players to use them in TSW would greatly enhance our game.

I've tried to limit any suggestions to what is just about already within the scope of the route, and might just need some extra modelling of scenery, and perhaps a few new wagons.

It must be said that I haven't been a fan of railways for very long, and I'm from Australia, so I'd love for you to add your knowledge about these far-flung routes and correct anything I get wrong. I have speculated at times, as information can be hard to come by.

(Some of the screenshots here of the in-game map are rather poor-looking as I couldn't do any better with their resolution when zoomed out. Some areas do not have 3D buildings on Google Maps so only some locations will have those images included.)

    Route

In this post, I'll be looking at Long Island Rail Road. I believe the route is set in 2018. Here is a map of the route as represented in game, numbered with each location that I will be highlighting.

    Industries

    Location 1

Beginning at the east end of the route in Hicksville, the Long Island Rail Road uses a few sidings to store maintenance of way (MOW) equipment. Here trains depart with loads of ballast and new railroad ties. Players could assemble consists of aggregate hoppers and flatcars and deliver materials to worksites with diesel locomotives.

    Location 2

The Garden City–Mitchel Field Secondary is a freight spur off the Hempstead Branch. It is used to store track maintenance rolling stock and lengths of rail. Players could run MOW trains from here to other locations around the route.

    Location 3

In New Hyde Park, S&S Fuel sells heating oil to consumers, and their supply arrives courtesy of tankcars from the railroad. Players could move tankcars to and from the sidings and attach pipes to unload the product.

    Location 4

In Queens Village, the Long Island Rail Road has another MOW staging and storage yard. Players could assemble consists of aggregate hoppers and flatcars and deliver materials to worksites with diesel locomotives.

    Location 5

Holban Yard is used for the storage and repair of MOW equipment and track materials. Players could assemble consists and take them to track renewal sites along the rest of the line.

    Location 6

West of Jamaica, two sidings serve a truck-to-train loading conveyor. Likely dealing with waste aggregates, players could load hopper wagons here and take them away.

    Location 7

Another MOW site exists in Sunnyside Yard, storing ballast hoppers and tamping machines. Players could shift these to where they are needed.

    Location 8

There is a second set of MOW sidings in Sunnyside Yard. Players could form trains and travel to track maintenance locations.

    Location 9

At Belmont Park, there are two unelectrified sidings that are used to deliver horse feed to the nearby racecourse. Players could shunt boxcars of oats to the site.

I hope this was interesting. Please feel free to add to this and let me know what I've got wrong. Thanks for reading!

I am loving this series, keep it up , yeah, if DTG made a NY&AR DLC for LIRR, then these areas could be covered ;)

For the Freight locomotives these are MP15DC SD40-2 GP40-2 and GP38-2 NYAR.

If LIRR got the diesels with the bi-level cars and some shunter going around these parts, it could really be like Peninsula Corridor, a railway with great variety and life.

I assume the CalTrain MP15DC could be modified pretty easily into an MP15AC in NY&AR or LIRR livery. Would be fun
