I’m aware that steam is a bit broken in TSW right now, but does that extend across all of the locomotives? The Flying Scotsman looks like a nice piece of kit to drive, but not if it’s just as borked as the 8f/Jubilee… I adored Crewe to Liverpool when it came out and I really miss driving the steam locos as they’re good fun.
In terms of the simulation of steam physics, some people say that Scotsman is in fact the worst one of them all. Personally I disagree with that, I think being able to run at full speed with the cutoff at 60% and still be gaining steam pressure makes the 4f the biggest joke of them all. But I would also say that doing 75mph at 45% cutoff makes Scotsman worse off than the Staniers. That being said, it is nice to drive if you disconnect yourself from any expectations about the steam physics. Plus, the amount of railtours it unlocks is brilliant, not only with the Scotsman itself but there are also numerous diesel railtours popping up on recent routes which use the crimson MK2s from the Scotsman addon, both Suffragette and the Cathcart 380 timetable have done this. It seems as though a lot of the future railtours on timetables will now be using this pack, even if not for the loco itself.
Speaking as a railfan who know nothing about steam, the Flying Scotsman is great fun! I even pretend to drive it in real life sometimes (by miming)! The services on the East Coast Mainline are a bit boring - I much prefer the Azuma. I would get it on sale (no idea how much it costs); it's probably going to be discounted soon.
As long as you don't mind it quite literally being an EMU in terms of accelerate and brake requiring absolutely no skill to drive then get it, it's a beautiful loco to look at and as said above the amount of rail tours it creates adds alot of variety. It's such a shame that DTG have given up ever fixing the mess that steam is but I guess what's out of sight is out of mind
If you enjoy driving the steam locos the Peak Forest route is good. You could go back to Crewe Liverpool again....
Of the four steam locos DTG produced for TSW, FS is by far the worst in terms of physics and performance.
For me, apart from the shoddy (non existent) steam physics, it's very easy to drive. It's basically like driving a emu or a dmu. With the braking system being modern legal requirements you can practically stop it exactly where you want it to stop. If you want a simple and easy drive then the Scotsman is ideal. But bare in mind, It's just a emu/dmu that's powered by pretend steam, and it really looks very nice. I would advise that you purchase it in a sale though.
It looks good, parked in and around stations on various routes. It even looks nice as it comes past silently, if you have you cab windows shut you might not notice its silence.
I bought TSW 4 partly for the Flying Scotsman. I suppose it helps that I wouldn't have a clue if the physics feel right, it's just such an iconic loco.
What a shame that what should have been a stand-out piece of locomotive DLC is relegated to something 'that looks nice as Ai'. After watching videos of people driving it I have to agree that it drives nothing like it should and if you are looking for a realistic, challenging drive then it's not going to be for you.
Probably the syncopated rocking with the coaches after the suspension was implemented on the coach stock. I'll take a look after I'm in. Seems to be mitigated to some degree, with the rocking.Anyone else tried the Scotsman?
Flying Dustbin, Trying Scotsman... If you want to know how a Uranium fuelled steam engine would feel, go for it. Endless supply of steam.
