PC Is This Just Normal Tsw4 Graphics Behavior?

So up until this point, surprisingly, I haven’t noticed this until today. I run everything on pretty much ultra or high graphics settings as I have a PC that can handle it, gratefully. But today I noticed odd graphics behavior and I’m wondering if it’s always been like this and I just didn’t notice and what other’s experience and if it’s the same. Foliage, textures, and view distance quality are all set on ultra so naturally, you’d expect the best looking graphics for those. Well I noticed that all the foliage is rather low quality until you’re fairly close to it, then it loads in the ultra graphics quality. I also noticed a lot of scenery, mostly foliage like small bushes and grass, don’t load in until you’re basically right on top of it. I noticed this a little bit with other scenery objects like traffic lights. And trees up on hillsides and some semi close to the tracks don’t load in until you’re close to them despite the view quality being set to ultra. Ground textures, despite being set on ultra, are also blurry and rather low quality looking. Only in photo mode are they magically higher quality. Why they don’t look like that when running the train is beside me.

What prompted me to notice this was using the same game feature for the first time and experiencing how flawed and broken that is. When I reloaded my scenario, which was free roam, I felt like a bunch had changed. Graphics quality seemed worse than before, performance took a hit with way more stutters than before, all the switches in the cab had been reset (marker lights on the cabcar turned off) just to name a few.

The same game stuff is beside the point for the sake of this post. I reloaded a new free roam scenario and double checked all of my graphics settings and that’s when I noticed what I posted above. It’s likely I only noticed it now because I was paying closer attention than I had before because I thought something was wrong. So it begs the question, is that just how the graphics are in TSW4? For a game produced in 2023, you’d think graphics would perform and behave much differently.

  4. Try SimRail, or Run8, or some other railway sim. Even if you're initially sceptical, you might be pleasantly surprised. At the moment, DTG don't deserve your cash.

Or Snowrunner, yes smaller area but insanely detailed with foliage, deformable roads and landscape, various mission calculations going on in the background and it runs as smooth as a fine butter.

May be you can set the graphics on low or medium and put 200% resolution, you will have to tweak a little after that and limit your FPS also. It's incredible to have so bad graphics on 100%!

Well from what I've been able to gather from these replies, it's certainly not me. It's just how TSW4 is. I almost liked it better when I didn't notice as much. Like I said, I only started noticing because I tried using the same game feature (which like I said is a whole mess in of itself) and nothing seemed right after reloading the scenario. So this is nothing short of typical DTG/TSW4 behavior. Pretty sad IMHO.

Test my proposed settings and run game on DX12:

TSW4 can really work much better and still use very high quality. It´s just poorly optimized because the default engine parameters have not been touched for years and still works under DX11. I have just played at NY Trenton route some minutes ago, known in the past by its terrible performance, and the difference is significative.

    Cheers

Yeah I know. I found myself in a situation where it would have helped out so I gave it a try. And now I know why it's fairly useless. Shouldn't have even been included until it's in a better state.

Thanks for this. I've actually been following this post a bit. I will give it a try!
