In another recent thread, Just Trains rewards (properly just called "Just Rewards") were mentioned and this got me thinking - which is never a good thing!

When it comes to JT rewards does anyone know the best way to use them? I believe it's 5 rewards per £1 spent and every 100 rewards gives you £1 discount off any future purchase? I'm wondering what works out best (money-wise); buying DLC in bulk (like the whole MML collection together), buying a few DLC together, or buying DLC one at a time. For instance...

    (1) If I buy all the MML DLC together, I would get x number of rewards for the whole purchase which I can then use on futute Just Trains or Just Flight DLC. So, I'd have lots of rewards but I'd have paid full price for the whole MML collection.

    (2) If I buy just one MML DLC I get rewards for that purchase. I can now use those rewards on the next MML DLC, costing me less and getting me new rewards for that purchase. But using rewards from a previous purchase makes the next purchase cheaper so I'd receive less rewards for that purchase. I assume I'd end up with less rewards over all and certainly less rewards left at the end (than in option 1). But the complete MML collection would be cheaper than in option 1.

Is anybody following this? I had to rewrite it several times because even I've lost track of what the question is!!!

They basically count as money when making purchases. Got $30 worth? That could cover a DLC or two depending on what you're buying. I would wait until there is likely to be little chance of ever needing anything from JT again, then use all of your points on a final purchase. Still got enough for a scenario pack somewhere? Pick it up just for shiggles. Want something expensive but don't want to wait for a sale? Blow them on that product.

I only have about $11.79 USD remaining as I used points on something at one point. So I will eventually get Buxton and Peak Forest when it's on discount, then I have to decide on the Salisbury extension. After that, I might be nearly done and looking at scenario packs if they don't have sales on anything else useful. Been waiting for the DT 40 to hit special, but it's being ignored.

I haven't done the maths, but my guess is that you should buy it all except 1, and then use your rewards to get a discount on the last one.

It doesn't gain any interest so use up all when you purchase.

I just use mine each time I make a purchase. There doesn’t seem to be a benefit to saving them.

The only time I didn’t do this is when I made a bigger purchase that actually gave me enough points for a wagon. So I left that off the order, got the points and went straight back in to get the wagon for free.

Generally though, because Just trains charge me in US Dollars (in Switzerland) it’s too expensive to buy from them. Their exchange rate is really bad. I’d rather get it discounted on ATS if they have it (while I have a subscription). Then I can pay in UKP and use the current exchange rate from my bank. The points don’t really make it worth it in my case.

The best way to use JT reward points is to give them to me.

No, to me. There are things that don't go on sale I need to swap into scenarios to encourage sales. ;)
