Captain Obvious would say that I am a big fan of trains/railways/trams and also loving the city of Vienna (hopefully one day I live there)... so I thought, I would create a thread giving you cool railway updates about Vienna as they happen... they are doing (and in coming years will be doing) a ton of interesting and cool things to their rail network The S80 corridor is starting its upgrade with some trackside work right now, eventually the level crossings will be removed in favor of underpasses (thats for coming yrs, track speed should go significantly up once it is done)... also Praterkai station is receiving modernization upgrade, aka new platform, new rails (also the bridge nearby)... I believe this is like a preliminary step towards when they extend S45 service from Handelskai southwards (now only open to freight traffic), with like 3 or 4 new stations, thus, with S80, forming a kind of ring-bahn There is some trackside work near Aspern Nord, possibly as a reverse track / sidings for S80 Both the Sussenbrunn and Raasdorf corridors towards Marchegg are receiving massive upgrades, the one via Aspern Nord is almost done double-tracking+electrification+removal of level crossings (except like 2), and the Sussenbrunn one is doing almost the same (except it is mostly double track already)... that way both should be (in time) up to 160-200 kmh at certain sections... also, Devínska Nová Ves - Marchegg section is FINALLY getting upgraded, the bridge renewed, whole section should go to 120 kmh track limit, and ELECTRIFIED (which is a wonder in itself lol)... cant wait... this should be ready mid December 2024 Wien - Wiener Neustadt, Pottendorfer Linie upgrade is MOSTLY done, with massively upgraded Wampersdorf station opening soon (Pottendorfer Linie removed level crossings, straightened the original line, now it should be 160-200 kmh at certain sections) Wien - Bruck an der Leitha - Bratislava is also receiving partial upgrades, with the biggest one being the massive extension of Gramatneusiedl station (looking massive, will probably be used as maintenance and freight yard)... in the future, probably starting 2025, a couple km after Bruck an der Leitha in the direction towards Wien, OBB is planning to build over 20 km of completely new double tracked corridor, connecting to the S7 corridor near Fischamend, thus linking the Bruck corridor to VIE (Vienna International Airport / Schwechat) - this will also provide possible direct rail connections to: Bratislava, Budapest... which is incredibly cool since S7 corridor only goes up to Wolfsthal (the reestablishment of old line to Bratislava nevermaterialized, with OBB eventually giving up and selling the land) So those are stuffz I can remember off the top of my head will be posting stuff here if I learn anything new... OBB and especially in Vienna/Nahverkehr Ostregion area they are making huge strides to get at Switzerland's/Germany's heels as one of the top not only in Europe and it is truly incredible witnessing it as it happens
