I'm facing a problem where my game (TSW3) is sometimes not detecting my ' key, that is used for 'Increase train brake'. It also happens when using a different keyboard. The key is detected fine by Windows, and also rebinding the key again does work fine, but then still it does not work to actually engage the brake. Kinda scary when speeding towards a red light.

    Which train does this affect?
Did the brake lever move at all? (I know the brakes didn't engage, but if the lever moved then it may be a loco issue)

Just to eliminate the obvious, does the train you are driving when this occurs actually have a separate brake lever and not a combined throttle and brake lever (operated only by the throttle keys) perhaps? I know I’ve tried to apply the brakes many times when not concentrating and wondered why it isn’t working until I remember what I’m driving doesn’t have a brake lever.

Do you have multiple keyboard layouts installed?
Some keyboard layouts do not have the apostrophe character in the same position. In some keyboard layouts (French for example) the apostrophe does not work like a simple character, it acts as a modifier, allowing you to type accented vowels, i.e. apostrophe followed by e will send é (e with acute).

It affects all trains. This afternoon I resolved the issue by rebinding the key (to the same key it was before, the apostrophe) but I have had to do that before so it's not a permanent fix.. I actually thought about it acting as a modifier, so I tried typing a vowel after it, but it didn't work eitherl

It wouldn't work like that, as the character sent would not be the apostrophe, it would be the accented vowel. To get the apostrophe, you'd have to type a space after it.
However, if you have such a keyboard layout, it would be better to avoid the apostrophe altogether.

Oh I know. But it has never been a problem before, in hundreds of hours playing TSW, TSW2 and TSW3.

I just had the issue again, with the Dispolok 182 this time. Rebinding the key did not work, only thing that fixed it was using Ctrl + = to go to the other cab, wiggle the brake there (the key now worked suddenly) and Ctrl + = back to the front cab. Now I could use the ' key to apply brakes. Very strange issue.

Very strange indeed... I actually can't think of anything that would help. Rebinding seems to be the only workaround.
