The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway started around 1833. It served passenger service from Buffalo, NY to Chicago, IL. This would be a great route to play in train simulator.

Also, the LS&MS is famous for its Ashtabula, Ohio train disaster. Pacific Express Train #5 left Erie, PA on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. There was a terrible blizzard that day as the train plowed through about two feet of snow as it reached the Ashtabula River in Northeast Ohio. The train was lead by two locomotives. As it crossed the Ashtabula River bridge, the bridge collapsed. The first locomotive made it across. The second locomotive and 11 railcars including passenger cars, plunged into the river. As a result, a fire ignited and turned into a horrible inferno. There were 159 passengers and 92 were killed. It is known as one of the worst rail disasters in American history. large.jpg
