Since we can't expect any new S-Bahn tunnel routes, how about remastering and extending the one we already have? Granted, they'd probably still have to go through the pain of light baking the tunnel again for the new TOD system, but not having to build the thing from scratch hopefully makes up for it.

In real life, the S2 and S8 lines make an X, intersecting at Bitterfeld. The idea here is to add the missing half of that X, the Halle to Lutherstadt Wittenberg line, to the Leipzig to Dessau line that we got in Rapid Transit. This means remastering the original 65 km route and adding about that same length on top of it, which seems completely reasonable to me. Of course some parts of the old route would need quite a bit of attention - the above-ground parts of Leipzig Hbf would have to be done from scratch, I assume.

There are direct trains from each of the two southern lines onto both the northern ones, so you get to drive all four different paths.

The S2 line runs from Leipzig to Bitterfeld half-hourly, with trains continuing to both Dessau and Wittenberg every two hours. S8 has the same service pattern, but starting from Halle. This means that there are two-hourly direct trains from both Wittenberg and Dessau to both Halle and Leipzig.

There is also an hourly Leipzig - Bitterfeld - Dessau (- Magdeburg) RE, and ICEs from both Halle and Leipzig to Wittenberg, and on to Berlin. The Halle ICEs only stop at Bitterfeld, not Wittenberg, but I think it would be fine to fudge this a bit for more drivable services...

There are also a few freight destinations dotted along the lines, plus the huge chemical plants at Bitterfeld of course!

Rolling stock wise, all you'd need on the passenger side would be the good old Talent II. Hopefully only needing one passenger train, which already exists for the most part, would make it possible to put some extra effort into the freight rolling stock - for the freight operations at Bitterfeld to work, the route really needs to include both a mainline loco and a shunter, and a good variety of wagons. Plus maybe this could be the time where we finally get some tank containers?
