I'm a bit concerned with a scenario in the Spirit of Steam journey called "Let off Some Steam" in which you drive a branch freight along the line from Ditton Junction (should be the 5th scenario you come to in journey mode). The consist for the scenario has unfitted wagons in front, fitted wagons in the middle, and unfitted wagons in the rear in front of the brake van. I'm concerned because I don't think the brakes on the fitted vehicles in the middle of the consist are releasing because they're not connected to the loco. I tried to start the train with sand and careful handling of the throttle, but it always triggered wheelslip. The loco wouldn't budge beyond taking up the slack. I uncoupled the last unfitted portion just to test and the loco still wouldn't pull the train. When I uncoupled the fitted section in the middle of the train from the unfitted portion in the front I could finally move. And yes, I waited until the gauge showed 21in of vacuum in the brake pipe before attempting to move the train. Typically fitted vehicles should be marshalled next to the loco so that the brake pipes can be connected to the loco and thus the driver can properly release and apply the brakes on the fitted vehicles. Where the fitted vehicles show up in the middle of the consist behind an unfitted head in this scenario, I don't think the brakes are releasing properly and thus I can't start the train.
I tried to find that because I remember Matt mentioned it on a stream before the release, but I couldn't see it. Now I see what I'm looking for. Thanks!
Thanks for this hint. I managed to make it work, but it is not easy finding all the release cords. I also found out that this scenario requires delicacy with the regulator, otherwise you get a lot of wheel slip, and you can find yourself slipping down the slope when you want to go up. The 'a' key is much to clumsy for this; I had to use the mouse on the regulator to ge tthe necessary delicacy.
Thanks for asking this question. I tried for an hour to get this train moving. I reversed, and the locomotive moved about 10 feet and 'hit the wall', pulled fwd, and it moved about ten feet, but I think it was only pulling and pushing the slack.
