Good afternoon everyone. Given the recent release of LIRR 2.0, the lack of diesel traction on this route immediately caught my attention. I'm referring to the MTA, CSX and NY&A diesel operations, which regularly serves this island. The route that I propose you today could be an extension of the existing map. Immerse yourself in the frenetic commuting of Long Island, with its busy central section. Then conduct quieter diesel services along the Port Jefferson Branch. Along the way you'll also have to manage NY&A's many local freight shipments/collections, also taking advantage of the New York Connecting Railroad. You'll also need to make deliveries on Port Jefferson branch and pick up goods arriving at the Oak Point Yard (CSX). This is LIRR Diesel Jobs! GENERAL FEATURES The entire network features 77mi/123.6km of tracks, of which 36.6mi/59km already present and modeled in LIRR 2.0/NEC: New York (+all branches already present). 40mi/64.6km of new tracks. The route layout would look something like this: 1) Mainline and Long Island City link, from Penn Station, passing through Sunnyside Yard (MTA ,Amtrak and NJT), Jamaica and Hicksville. Including link to LIC terminal. Features: - 25mi/39,6 km of lenght. - 3/4 tracks mostly (mainline), standard gauge 1435 mm/4 ft 8+1⁄2 in. - Electrified 750V DC (third rail), from Hicksville to Sunnyside Yard-->Penn Station. - 16 total stations. - 2 new stations on Long Island City link: Long Island City Terminal and Hunters Point Av. - Sunnyside Yard (already present ingame). Section already modeled in LIRR 2.0, new additions of third track from Floral Park to Hicksville and Long Island City link. 2) New York Connecting Railroad (NYS NEC/Fremont branch), from Woodside Jn. to Oak Point Yard. Freight branch/Amtrak-NJT, passing the famous Hell Gate Bridge. Section between Woodside Junction and Fresh Pond Yard is also present. Features: - 10,6mi/17km of lenght. - Single track (freight)+double track (Amtrak-NJT, from/to Sunnyside Yard), standard gauge 1435 mm/4 ft 8+1⁄2 in. - Partially electrified 12.5 kV 60Hz AC (OHLE) on main stretch (front of Oak Point yard) and two tracks towards Sunnyside Yard. - No stations. - Hell Gate Bridge. - Oak Point Yard (CSX). - Fresh Pond Yard (NY&A lower one, CSX upper one). Section already modeled in NEC: New York (Fresh Pond-Sunnyside-Hell Gate Bridge-Oak Point). 3) Lower Montauk branch. From Long Island City sidings, passing through Fresh Pond Junction and lower Yard (NY&A), to Richmond Hill Yard (MTA) and Jamaica. Features: - 14,3km/ 9 mi of lenght. - Mostly double track, standard gauge 1435 mm/4 ft 8+1⁄2 in. - No electrification on site. - LIC Terminal (MTA). - Fresh Pond lower Yard (NY&A) - Richmond Hill abandoned station. - Richmond Hill Yard (MTA). 4) Port Jefferson branch, from Hicksville to Port Jefferson, passing through Huntington. Mixed freight/passenger branch. Features: - 33mi/52,7km of lenght. - Double track, standard gauge 1435 mm/4 ft 8+1⁄2 in, to halfway point between Huntington and Greenlawn. Then single track served, up to Port Jefferson. - Electrified 750V DC (third rail), up to Huntington station. - 11 new stations. - Port Jefferson sidings (MTA). ROUTE AND STATIONS The route, in its new areas, includes the following stops: A) Long Island City branch: - Long Island City Terminal (LIC) - Hunters Point Av. (right above the NY Penn Terminal tunnels entrance) B) Port Jefferson branch: - Hicksville (already present) - Syosset - Cold Spring Harbor - Huntington, end of electrification and double track. - Greenlawn - Northport - Kings Park - Smithtown - St. James - Stony Brook - Port Jefferson, and MTA yard ROUTE PLAN 1) Oak Point Yard 2) Long Island City terminal MTA 3) Fresh Pond Junction and Yard 4) Richmond Hill Yard MTA 5) Jamaica station 6) Hicksville station 7) Huntington station 8) Port jefferson terminal MTA PASSENGER SERVICE Passenger service is provided by MTA. a) Penn Station-Huntington: Penn Station<--->Woodside<--->Jamaica<--->Hicksville<--->Huntington. 1/2Tph all day long. 78 daily services (37Eb+41Wb) to/from Penn Station. Travel time 1h 38/42min. b) Penn Station/LIC-Port Jefferson: Penn Station<--->Woodside<--->Jamaica<--->Hicksville<--->Huntington<--->Port Jefferson. 1Tph (rush hours) and 1Tp2h (other day times). During rush hour it's diverted to Long Island City Terminal (LIC). This to ease traffic flow at Penn Station. 29 daily services (14 Eb+15 Wb) to/from Penn Station+10 services (5 Eb+5 Wb) to LIC. Travel time 2h 23/28min. TIMETABLE: https://www.mta.info/document/85026 Features: - All services already available. - New Penn Station/LIC Terminal<--->Port Jefferson. FREIGHT SERVICE Freight service is operated by CSX Transportation from Oak Point to Fresh Pond upper yard. It is also operated by New York and Atlantic Railway (NY&A), from Fresh Pond lower yard to Huntington/Greenlawn. There's also a switching service between Long Island sidings and Richmond Hill Yard (Along the Lower Montauk branch). Freight sectors: Construction products, waste material, ethanol, aggregates, steel, paper and plastic, baled garbage. Occasional car transports are also seen along the New York Connecting Railroad. Features: - Oak Point Yard<--->Fresh Pond upper yard, operated by CSX. - Fresh Pond upper yard locomotive turnover CSX<--->NY&A, towards Bay Ridge piers (not included in this expansion). - Fresh pond lower yard to various freight destinations (delivery/collection) along the Central Line and Port Jefferson branch, up to Huntington. This through the Montauk Lower branch, Richmond Hill Yard and Jamaica. - Some freight operations on the Montauk Lower branch, with excursions also on the central line. - Richmond Hill Yard MTA recovery operations at the diesel workshop and depot. ROLLING STOCK On this network, the following rolling stock can be seen: PASSENGER Amtrak and NJT stock already present ingame (AI only): - Siemens ACS-64 Electric locomotive + Amfleet cars and cabcar. - Bombardier ALP-46 Electric locomotive + Multi Level cars and cabcar. - EMD SW1000R Switcher (passenger depot duties). - MTA M7 and M9 Stock (already ingame) The classic MTA railcars that we have already become familiar with. - MTA EMD DE30AC/DM30AC Diesel-electric and bi-modal locomotive + C3 Stock and cabcar (new stock) The only difference between DM30AC and DE30AC is the presence (DM) of the multi-power supply system, diesel-electric and 750V DC (with third rail, like M7 and M9). The C3 convoy includes a cabcar and 3/4 cars. FREIGHT CSX traction stock already ingame: - EMD GP38-2 Yn3b Diesel-electric locomotive - EMD SD40-2 Yn3b "" - GE C40-8W and GE AC4400CW can stand static view at Oak Point Yard. - NY&A Railway EMD GP38-2 Diesel-electric locomotive (rebuild stock) 4 NY&A units: 261, 268, 270 and 271+ 4 GATX (on leasing) units: 402, 2127, 2200 and 2204. The only differences between the NY&A and GATX specimens are the absence of red marker lights on bonnets and the presence of different horn sets (GATX). These GP38-2s are distinguished from CSX ones by the cabin (non-updated interior) and absence of the air conditioner. - NY&A Railway/MTA EMD MP15AC Diesel-electric road switcher (POSSIBLE FUTURE DLC) 4 NY&A Railway units: 151, 155, 156 and 159. 23 MTA units. However, only 8/10 are in running condition. They can be used either as an actual switcher (inside yards), or as an extra locomotive in local freight convoys. MTA uses them in pairs for service/goods operations, on the Lower Montauk branch and over. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES STRONG POINTS - The route is long and non-linear. - The route has an excellent timetable, both freight and passenger. - The map presents approximately one third of the route already modeled in LIRR V2 (Jamaica-Hicksville, Sunnyside Yard, Richmond Hill?, and Woodside Junction). - Presence of many companies with dedicated track (goods delivery/collection). - Good part of the urban network coming from LIRR 2.0 and NEC: New York. - M7 and M9 already present ingame. - GP38-2 and GP40-2 already present ingame. GP38-2 NY&A version should simply be remodeled from CSX one (Cabin and interiors). - MP15AC is the AC traction version of the MP15DC Caltrain already present ingame. - Some rolling stock may come from NEC: New York (updated?): SW1000R, 85-foot flatcar+waste containers etc... Giving them new life! WEAK POINTS - The route is quite long, exceeding 100 km in total length. - Complex cityscape to model. ROUTE VIDEOS Trainspotting in Huntington. Trainspotting in Port Jefferson Lower Montauk/Bushwick branches freight action! Long Island freight overview. CONCLUSIONS If you love NY City, but are not satisfied enought with the frenetic commuter traffic, this is the route for you! A balanced mix of passenger and freight transport, with many switching duties inside the various yards and sidings of Long Island! This is my response to LIRR V2! If you liked my proposal, comment below and don't hesitate to give me clarifications (since I'm not local, but live on the other side of the Atlantic...). Caravatt. PS. Below here, I put some photos of the route and its key points.
Oak Point Yard (CSX). Fresh Pond Yard and sidings (NY&A/CSX). Top left: Metro depot. Richmond Hill Yard MTA. On top: diesel locomotive workshop. Centre: diesel depot. Route key points. Left: Port Jefferson general view. Right: Huntington Downtown.
Wow nicely organized. I think players would like to see this. I'd definitely give this a try to see how accurate it is if it comes to the game.
I agree I love the de/dm also I see your profile photo are you an engineer for lirr? I want to apply is it hard???
Yea I am. I'd say yea it can be challenging you've got to pass the cognitive test then you are given 1 month to learn all the signals. Its alot of tests and studying but if you have a good memory, you can do it.
Yes last week I and a few others ran down the PJ to just west of syosset to tow a broken de30 passengers had to be transferred to another train besides rescuing trains I sometimes run the work trains.
I really hope the diesels with the bilevels get added either in the form of a separate route or just a train add-on at some point. With them the passenger roster for LIRR would be pretty much complete and Long Island City terminal would finally get some action - which it would really deserve, considering the name. As for freight operations, even without new yards added, there would still be plenty of area to play in. The main branch has plenty of freight sidings that could be used in some form. The LIRR MP15 would be pretty awesome, especially since it would be really great if TSW could get more american switchers - especially now that the CalTrain MP15 goes out of sale and we have lost the Amtrak switcher long time ago. With the whole LIRR 2.0 thing, I do hope they still feel like LIRR holds potential and worths investing into.
They could add NYAR there is a job that goes to New Hyde Park Oil Ive seen him switching from my train before.
Seeing this list, it is a bit inaccurate today 40 ran to KLEET and New Hyde Park Oil left back for Fresh pond about like 1:50 EST I passed him at AMOTT
Does the Bushwick Branch still see any traffic? I always thought that quite fascinating, almost like an extended Kalmbach model railway with all the industry locations.
Mostly yes, Vern. It represents the local waste terminal facility. However, Bushwick is just a small diversion of the more complex Lower Montauk branch. From Long Island City node to Richmond Hill yard. There you'll find the Maspeth, Blissville and Wheelspur yards. Plus several sidings and about 15 companies served! All of this passing through the lower Fresh Pond level, crossing with NYCR. That's why I included it in this suggestion: lots of switching (daily/weekly) and great overall freight situation!
I would very much love to see this. Also don't see why they wouldn't just repaint the MP15 for this route.
A Port Jefferson extension would be amazing to see in TSW. It’s a scenic route and the LIRR diesels are much needed in TSW. This would also provide another complete EMU branch to Huntington. I hope this becomes a reality.
Can't you get the same thing right now off the CC though? Kind of pointless for an official DLC to have a paint on a loco that a railroad doesn't own IRL.
Wouldn't be pointless if it either increased the likelihood of the route extension being made due to lower required man hours or lowered its overall price for the same reason. Plus, I assume they'd have a timetable with such an extension, which CC can't give you.
About how many freight services do you estimate this route would give us and how would they look like?
Ask OP. They've clearly done the research; I just think freight services on LIRR would be great and wouldn't care if they reused the formerly Caltrain version of the MP15.
It might, I just love the MP15 DLC and would be really happy with additional routes for it to run on. These feelings are independent of thinking your suggestion would be awesome; freight on LIRR and an extension would be awesome regardless of what we end up driving.
All of NYAR runs down the mainline it would probably be Jamaica to Hicksville (If the PJ was added then to duke)
Like it LIRR definitely needs a huge expansion, but if the DE30AC, DM30AC Along with c3 stock MP15AC and any other loco in expansion had to come to the LIRR route or the LIRR commuter they would be put as a separate add on
I think if you go back to my question, I did ask how many playable services amount. Is it 5, 10, 15 playable services. DTG would ask the same questions, how many playable services will it actually add since this will determine if is worth adding.
8/10 Daily mainline services, plus several switching activities (many delivery/collection). Without forgetting CSX operations on NYCR! You can find all the details here (scroll down): https://railroadfan.com/wiki/index.php/New_York_&_Atlantic_Railway If we take into account all jobs (CSX, NY&A and MTA), we could reach 25/30 freight/switching and 117 passenger services (142+daily).
Bring it on and for the DM30AC on this route looks like you would be playing it as 3rd rail to Huntington and Diesel to Port Jefferson. Here's the Oddity of your extension is that Huntington to Port Jefferson is supposed to be electric operation in the 1980s which is why it has 12 car length platform
Sounds quite interesting. I do miss Oak Point Yard. The freight services from there were some of my favourites on the original NEC. I’d love to see it come back.
No we switch to diesel coming into Jamaica more efficient they suck in 3rd rail mode. Metro north does the same with the p32s when they exit park ave they switch to diesel. I had a friend who was running a deadhead and couldn't get the diesel to crank so had to run all the way up to croton in 3rd rail mode was a pain
