Hi, I need some advice on the LMS Stanier Class 5 'Black Five' Steam Loco Add-On. It's a Bossman model bought on Steam.

I'm new to driving steam locomotives but have driven some. I'm unable to get it running because the "reverser" just doesn't work. Whenever I move it (using the "W", "S" or directly in the cab) it always reverts to the "0" position. It feels like it's locked even though unlocked with the "E" key I have it. Would you describe a procedure (preferably using the keys) to get the machine moving?
I have the auto heater on (the same problem occurs when I have it off in TSC) and expert control. Thanks a lot for the advice.

It's not a plug n play DTG'esque loco, it's more involved than that, you need to read the manual, we'd only be repeating here what's already written anyway, ok you're going to get someone come along and 'flex' their knowledge but again they're only repeating what they learnt from the manual themselves..

Tl;Dr... RTFM.. and enjoy the learning process. ;)

You will need to hold down the E key and at the same time press R or W - the E key is like holding down the sprung lock on the reverser so you can move it. When you let go the lock clicks back into place so the thing can't run forward or jump forward like a real reverser would do - and has broken bones in the past - as soon as pressure is raised in the cylinders. Its not that obvious if you are using some of the more complex locos for the first time. The other thing is not to worry too much about over filling the firebox to start with. Look at the amount of coal in the firebox when the scenario opens (F5) and jot that number down - its roughly where you need to keep the firebox level - although even another 10-20% does no harm especially if you are low on boiler pressure. Keep that boiler pressure high - try to make sure ( by using the reverser at minimum levels ) levels that steam generated is greater than steam used - F5 is again your friend here. Don't get discouraged it takes practise not to run out of water / pressure / fire when you first start.

The F3/F4 HUD is not reflective of the position of the reverser. the F5 HUD will show what the position of the Reverser is in. As said above, Hold down E and W/S to adjust the cut-off with the reverser and release the E when you reach the desired position to lock it.

I said "You will need to hold down the E key and at the same time press R or W -" - sometimes I feel I may need to check myself into a long term care facility !!! it should be W & S keys of course
