As older diesel locomotives became less reliable due to their age, they were often rebuilt with new engines and electronic components. This was done because it was cheaper for railroads to rebuild locos than to purchase new ones. For example, the CB&Q owned E8s and E9s that handled Chicago commuter services. In the 1990s, many of the old, worn out E-Units were rebuilt with single EMD 645 prime movers in place of the twin 567s and new electronic equipment. This is a list of modern rebuilt diesel locomotives that I would want to see in TSW3 on existing routes. I will include a short description about each model.

    1.) Norfolk Southern:
NS is no stranger to rebuilding diesel locomotives. They have been doing it fairly successfully at their shops in Altoona, PA: the Juniata Shops. Here are the NS rebuilt engines I want to see:
-SD70ACUs: former UP SD90-43MACs rebuilt into basically SD70ACes with SD90 bodies and SD70ACe cabs
-SD70ACCs: formerly NS Spartan Cab SD70s rebuilt with AC traction motors and new electronics; basically upgraded SD70MACs; cab is an SD70ACe cab; prototypes have a yellow and gray livery
-AC44C6Ms: formerly NS C40-9s (Narrow Cab units), C40-9Ws, and C44-9Ws rebuilt with AC traction motors and new wide cabs; basically upgraded AC4400CWs; prototype livery is blue and gray and is reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog; livery is the same design as the SD70ACCs; there is a black and gray version, too
-GP33ECOs: NS rebuilt 28 of their ex-Southern RR GP50s as Tier 3-Compliant locomotives
-GP59E/GP59ECOs: Rebuilt NS GP59s with upgraded electronic systems and new Admiral Cabs
-SD40Es: Rebuilt from unreliable SD50s; basically upgraded SD40-2s with SD50 bodies
-SD60Es: Rebuilt Standard Cab SD60 with a new cab, electronics, and uprated EMD 710 engine
-Admiral Cabs: mentioned above; NS has rebuilt many of their GP38-2s/GP38-3s and SD40-2s with this new cab, as well as the ECO units; the cab meets new crashworthiness standards; the Admiral Cab was designed by a retired US Navy Admiral who worked for NS in their board of directors, and the windows sloping forward is based on Navy ships.
-SD33ECOs: Rebuilt NS SD40-2s with the same ECO upgrades as the GP59ECO and GP33ECO

    2.) CSX:
CSX has some interesting rebuilt diesel locomotives that I would like to see in TSW3. Here is the list:
-SD40-3s: Rebuilt SD40-2s with an interesting new cab design with crash protection, new controls, mechanical systems, and upgraded elctronics; rebuilds done at CSX's Huntington, WV Shops and Motive-Power's facilities in Boise, Idaho starting in 2011; I've heard the cab called the "Spongebob Cab" due to its design; I'm not a huge fan of the cab design, but it is interesting looking.
    -GP38-3s: Same upgrades as CSX's SD40-3s
-GP40-3s: Again, same upgrades as SD40-3s and GP38-3s
-ET23DCMs: An interesting rebuild of 13 CSX SD40-2s with 6-Cylinder GE GEVO prime movers; Tier 4 Compliant; these look like SD40-2s with SD70M-style flared radiators
-SD70ACs: Rebuilt SD70MACs on CSX; new Mitsubishi electronics have replaced the original Siemens electronic systems
-CM44AHs: Rebuilt CSX AC4400CWs; CSX CW44AHs already in game

    3.) Union Pacific:
UP has been rebuilding many of their locomotives with the help of their Jenks Shops and Wabtec. Here is the list of rebuilt UP diesels:
-UP Heritage Fleet E9 A-B-A set: UP rebuilt these E9s each with single 645 prime movers like the BN E-Units mentioned in the introduction of this suggestion; these are used on UP's business and excursion trains occasionally.
-C44ACMs: Rebuilds of three different locos by Wabtec: UP AC4400CWs (in game already), AC6000CWs/AC4460CWs, and C44-9Ws (currently being rebuilt)
-SD40Ns: Jenks Shops rebuilds of UP SD40-2s; upgraded electronics and control systems; in game already
-GP40Ns: Rebuilt UP GP40-2s; same upgrades as SD40Ns
-GP38Ns/GP39Ns: Same upgrades as SD40Ns and GP40Ns; also in game already
    -GP60Es/GP62s: Rebuilt UP GP60s
    -SD60Es/SD62s/SD62Es: Rebuilt UP SD60s
-GP22T4s: 10 UP GP38-2s rebuilt as Tier 4-Compliant road switchers with Cummins prime movers
    -SD59MXs: Rebuilt UP SD60Ms with 12-Cylinder Tier 2-Compliant 710 Prime Movers

    4.) BNSF:
BNSF also has a few rebuilt diesel locomotives that are actually rebuilds of rebuilds, as well as a few other designs. Here is the list:
-GP39-3s: Rebuilt GP30 and GP35 locos; original BN rebuilds done by VMV (GP39V), EMD (GP39E), and Morrison-Knudsen (GP39M)
    -GP25s: Rebuilt GP50s
    -GP60M-3s: Rebuilt GP60Ms
-SD70MACes: Rebuilt SD70MACs; same upgrades as CSX SD70ACs
-AC44C4Ms: 20 rebuilt ex-Santa Fe C44-9Ws (#s 599-619); locos have GEVO cabs, AC traction motors, and ES44C4/ET44C4s trucks with 4 axles powered
    -GP38-3s: Rebuilt GP40s/GP40-2s/GP38-2s
-SD40-2Rs: SD45-2s rebuilt as SD40-2s with 16-Cylinder engines; same body
    -SD32ECOs: 3 Rebuilt SD45-2s with the same 12-Cylinder 710 prime mover as UP's SD59MX rebuilds
-GP28Ms/GP28Ps: Rebuilds of ex-BN/GN/NP/CB&Q GP9s and GP18s, as well as GNs GP5s (rebuilt GP9s) done in the early 1990s
-B40-8Ws: Rebuilt and repainted by BNSF for local/yard duties

    -Canadian National:
CN has at least one rebuilt locomotive model: the SD75ACC, which is an SD75I with AC Traction Motors like NS's SD70ACCs.

CN also has AC44C6Ms as well. They have about 50 of them so far starting with number 3300. They've only begun getting their C44-9Ws rebuilt. They are basically doing the same thing as what Norfolk Southern did. Don't forget CPKC is rebuilding their AC4400CWs as well. They already have a bunch of AC4400CWMs out on the high iron

While we don't have a CP Rail route at this time, I'd like to suggest a few of their rebuilt diesels in addition to the CPKC AC4400CWMs.

-SD30C-ECOs: 50 rebuilt CP SD40-2s with 12-cylinder 710 prime movers; basically CP's version of BNSF's SD32ECOs with CP railroad-specific cabs, fuel tanks, and SD45-style flaired radiators
-GP20C-ECOs: 130 rebuilt CP GP9s with the same railroad-specific details as their SD30C-ECOs; prime mover is an 8-cylinder 710
-SD70ACUs: CP has these locos, just like NS. There are 60 on the roster. They are ex-CP SD90MACs (with a couple ex-UP ones, too). CP has 10 of them painted in the classic CP passenger livery and 5 armed forces versions.

    -Other rebuilds:
-GP22ECOs: Rebuilt GP40-2s with 710 prime movers and mechanical and electronic upgrades; Tier II-compliant; NS and KCS have a few of these engines on their rosters
-SD22ECOs: Same upgrades as GP22ECOs, but in SD40-2s; NS and KCS have these too
-NS C40-8.5W: Rebuilt NS C40-8Ws with electronics upgrades; NS planned to rebuild 84 of their C40-8Ws; locos had problems and were eventually retired; C40-8.5W rebuild program cancelled in favor of DC to AC rebuilds (SD70ACC, AC44C6M)
-Progress Rail PR30Cs: 7 rebuilt SD40-2s with Caterpillar 3516 16-cylinder prime movers and SD70ACe-style flaired radiators
-Progress Rail PR43Cs: A Genset locomotive; 3 rebuilt from NS SD50s with a 12-cylinder Cat C175 engine and a Cat C18 700HP engine; engines look like SD70ACe units; all engines scrapped by PR because of repeated failures
-UP GP15N: rebuilt GP15-1/T/ACs with the same upgrades as UP's other Jenks Shops rebuilds
-UP SW10 "Hammerhead" switchers: rebuilt in the 1980s from older SW7s, SW9s, and TR5s; UP #96 still in use in Cheyenne Yard for their Heritage Fleet passenger train operations
