Hey everyone! Over the last month, I've been diving into the PC Editor, Closely following the advice of the Masterclass on YouTube, I chose to recreate the entire railway network of a quaint UK city. I figured, how tough could it be, right? As I'm still getting the hang of both the PC Editor and the Unreal Engine, the future of this project is a bit of a mystery. It might never be polished enough for an official release, so try not to get too attached just yet. However, I'm excited to share a snippet of the route that I think looks quite neat and thought you might appreciate a sneak peek. Curious if anyone can guess which city and line this is? Stay tuned, as I'll also be uploading a short video where I take a train for a spin along this very section later on! Hope you enjoy this glimpse!
Well spotted Here is a little video where I'm driving from Dalston Kingsland to Canonbury Also, this is my track laying progress so far I'm currently jumping in between locations quite a bit, trying to experiment with lots of different aspects of route building. On that note, I have a couple of things where I'm currently stuck, and would greatly appreciate any help: Platform Display boards: I spent the whole day today trying to get them to work, but they don't want to. Did anyone get them to work? Tensioning Areas: The OHLE tool has a button for creating tensioning areas, but I never got it to work Adding collision to platform splines: I fail to add collision to platform splines. The editor crashes every time I try to modify the meshes Car stop marker: They seem very tedious to work with. Is there an easier way than adding all the signs and poles for the car sop signed manually? Something similar to signals? LOD generation: UE4 is normally able to generate LOD models for imported assets automatically. It seems that this is not working with the PC editor. Has anyone encountered this issue before? North London Line Cabride: Does anyone know an eastbound cab ride video for the North/East London Line? Thanks for any help! And I hope you enjoy my progress
Platform display boards have the habit of not working in PIE when the map tile containing the display board is already loaded when you start playing. Just start at a distant location and drive to the board to see if it will work. You can export your platform spline as FBX using file-export selected... And reimport that as a static mesh, giving you full flexibility for collision generation. You should be able to install a compatible version of UE4 editor alongside TSW Editor and copy assets with LOD into your TSW project. The other questions I don't know. Looks awesome though!
This guy here really just dropped one of the best projects we have in the Editor out of nowhere. My respect! Ha Ha! That is the confidence we need! Dream big, high hopes. Well said. Yes, I think this is true for all of our projects. Also consider that the Editor still consists of so many issues, it's hard to make a statement in this regard. I think what all engages us it the hope and the joy to replicate the route of our choice into TSW. So, you really want to say you learned all tools, did the track network and the scenery and all the other things in just one month? That's incredible, Mate. Keep going, keep going!
RobertSchulz Thank you! I enjoy city/railway building games like city skylines and transport fever quite a lot, but at some point found them quite restrictive in what I'm able to create. So doing in in unreal/PC editor feels a bit like a game to me Learning the skills certainly takes some time, but I have a bit of experience in modding/3D modelling for Transport Fever 2. Also my nearly finished PhD in computer science helps But never used an engine like unity or unreal before that. fceschmidt Thanks, these are all very good tips! Will give it a try
This is the sort of progress I could have made for my project if I had more time! Looking forward to seeing more progress with this.
Just a little teaser Progress has been slow recently for different reasons. I did some refactoring and restructuring of my project setup, and am still resolving the issues I created along the way. For some reason, I didn't create the map in a separate plugin, and moving things around caused a lot of trouble. But I hope you like the new screenshots
Holy cow... this looks brilliant!!! It's impressive what you are undertaking, and I commend you for that!! Good luck with the development!
I'm absolutely staggered at this. I've spent thousands of hours building London similarly to this in Transport Fever so really excited to watch this unfold
As long as you do the movements of the files (for example the map file) within the Editor (and not in the Explorer), theoretically you should have no big problems as Unreal should be able to recreate the dependencies then. Most files we use are referenced to assets by other DLCs anyway. And the files which do have a reference to other assets in the actual DLC folder of your route (usually the Data Assets like the RouteDefinition, Timetable, Station Directory etc.) should in theory easily be able to being edited with a different path to the new location of these. In case for the map file, I kept the Map Build Data Registry also. Lukas said in the masterclass to delete it but I just kept it for some safety. Don't know if it has a lot of reasonings as there is not much inside of it. If you have any problems with the movements, feel free to ask for them either here or in a separate thread in the forum. Yes, I do. I would like to echo the question above. Did you created all these London assets by yourself in a 3D tool like Blender or did you used the assets from elsewhere? I can't recall that I saw that skyline in the Goblin Line. Maybe did you exported and converted them from a TSC route?
wish I had your skills, as I am dying for some Vienna content in TSW but London seems nice as well ))
About the assets, I had a bunch of them still lying around from my TPF2 modding days (https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198027114790/myworkshopfiles/?appid=1066780). Like jgoulddtg#9093 , I also spent a good amount of time recreating London in TPF2 and Cities: Skylines. The PC Editor felt like the next step xD. However, a few other assets are placeholders that might need replacement if this map ever reaches a stage where it could be published. KrisKol : I'm still in the process of learning how to use the PC editor. I don't have a particular plan for what I'm trying to achieve or where I want to go with this. I treat working on it more like playing Cities: Skylines, where I work on one interesting corner at a time. This means I don't have a specific intention to focus on a particular area and haven't thought much about how to publish this. I think it would be a dream to have the whole of the London Network within the M25 as a map, with all the services where players can just drive around in timetable mode and change at all the stations to take on the next service. However, I have no idea if that is even feasible performance-wise, as so far, only single routes have been published, not an entire network. I am very aware that this is a massive project, and I don't know if I will ever find the time to complete even a part of it. However, I am very open to collaboration in any way
Love the aspirations, network style routes really capture the best of TSW. Can't wait to keep following your progress
Omgggg that was you??? I remember seeing you release your first mod! Amazing progress on how far youve come!
Wow, we have DTG saying they couldn’t bring the ECML to Kings Cross because it’s ‘too hard’, yet incrediblehannes is creating the whole of London single handedly…
As an outsider in this, I'd just like to say that I don't think he was insulting you and that you've misinterpreted what he's saying.
With a project like this its probably better to have a clear focus, like making the entire SE network or southern network for example. London brighton is already pretty demanding and thats just the brighton mainline services. You could maybe split this into multiple smaller routes if performance is real bad but still keep that network feel
Looks like no associated discount for the signal path, and based on the price I would say signals been a virtually worthless value so that the signal pack itself maintains the full price at three pounds less. I see at least three additional routes are required. Could be worse, but clearly a reason for the lower price to start with, and the sky/weather is needed for the scenarios (which I did buy v2.0 by now, but not installed yet). Still comes to $35 CAD. Way less than a brand new route like Tennessee Pass (esp. since I own the required routes and weather pack). I will say I don't like that he removed and replaced other Bedford route scenarios with ones on the new route instead, completely removing content that a user had previously purchased. For instance, if I download the old 319 scenarios, nine run on the Bedford route. All are gone and replaced with the new versions. I have no problem with providing new versions, but removing the old ones leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Just provide both. It makes it harder to try the 319 out of the box now if you don't first own the new route. That is something they do that I have never liked. Time to ensure my backups of those are sound.
To be honest, I'm quite confused whats going on here. Something in this thread escalated, and I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I would very much appreciate if we could keep this thread on the topic of the route I'm sharing in here (It seems like that I cant moderate this thread :/) Unfortunately I was busy this week with my life, otherwise I would have loved to steer this conversation back on topic with some new screenshots. But on a serious note, I recently struggle a lot with random editor crashes with the following error: Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. Googeling suggested that might have something todo with my gpu or gpu drivers but so far I was not able to find a solution yet. Anyone experiencing a similar issue? Annoyingly I keep loosing quite some progress recently because of this issue, which makes working on this project a bit frustrating :/
This thread is really rather baffling, though as always entertaining. Anyhow I must say that this is looing brilliant mate, you seem to be doing a fine job. Honestly modern electric commuter routes aren't my cup of tea, but I really must applaud your effort and will certainly be keeping my eye on progress. Lovely stuff!
To be quite honest, despite being the one who made the joke that threw things off topic in a reply, I'm still quite baffled myself as to how that happened. Feel bad that it's derailing your thread man. You have done an incredible amount of work so far. I am always hopeful for any project to get to a state where it is usable by the average player for general use and for driving services. I originally urged for you and someone else to work together between projects. It was after that when everything went upside down.
I made some progress detailing the tracks around Stratford -> Hackney Wick. The scenery and buildings around the tracks are obviously still missing, but I think its already looking quite nice
I love this! absolutely amazing, giving me strong Goblin vibes! will the existing lines in TSW (Goblin, HS1) be included in this map?
Does this answer your question? But on a more serious note, I haven't thought much about if/how/when I will publish this. I have no experience with performance, and if it's even possible to create network maps like I have in mind. But for now, I will focus on the North London Line
Looks amazing. Do you think you will release the North London Line as a standalone thing? As you're focussing on it now, and I'm sure it would be great to have the NLL, even tho its only a small part of your big project!
I would not mind seeing it as its own project, to be honest. Then extended later. The question is if anyone can port scenarios over. Having its own timetable scenario would be a good idea, too.
Hi I’m very curious but is the tamslink core on this also if u want any help on like trains that run on the line or anything I don’t mind giving advice
We don't, at least not as an official piece of DLC, maybe it's in the works by some talented modder. Class 710 is the only overground train in TSW so far. The screenshots look incredible, incrediblehannes you are doing some great work!
We still need a 710 in TSC too, with the route extension modded onto Barking Riverside on the Goblin. Maybe someday…but hopefully by a good dev.
Please stop arguing, this is one of the best route creation threads ever and I wouldn't want it to get dirty. By the way, Thanks to the creator for making this great route!!
