It's the MSB 185 (Raillion), and it's at the start service at Aschaffenburg so banking comms shouldn't be an issue AFAIK. It's quite an extensive service pattern: the train (185 + 40 (20x2) sggmrss cars) arrives from the Waigolshausen portal at Gemünden, drives to Aschaffenburg Gbf where another loco (DCZ 363) picks it up and transports it to Aschaffenburg Hafen. There the train is split in 4 to be "loaded with new containers" by two 363's. After about 2-3 hours the train is put together and brought back to Aschaffenburg Gbf by yet another 363, after which the original 185 is coupled to its rear for the journey back (split in three services + 2 banking services up the Spessart ramp). It's at the start of that first service that the simulation crashes.

First off, sounds like a very cool service. No idea why it doesn't work though. Is it only the simulation that crashes or is it also broken when you play it in the Editor?

Thanks! ;) It did work in PIE when I last checked, but I did a few modifications on it before simulating. I'll keep you posted on any progress I make on this.

I don't think I've seen that particular error message before, but something you could try as a last resort if you have made any changes to the route network since you last filled the signalling sections: I would suggest you to clear all your signal routing tables and to fill them completely from scratch again :) This tended to resolve some weird error messages for me when they were related to the dispatcher.

EDIT: I just realized it's not your own route. That can't be it then!

    Thank you!

The way you state this makes me think you have a request regarding ICE41 services. Can you elaborate a bit more on what you're missing in my timetable?

    -------

Still working on finding a fix for the simulation crash, but I've now simulated everything again by not assigning a formation to the affected services so I can test some more with PIE what's wrong.
edit: PIE does crash when starting the affected service, with the crash message above.

I have now tested a random test service. Seems I cannot start a service from track 206 at Aschaffenburg Gbf (east of Hbf) towards Gemünden, as that makes TSW crash. Let's hope another track does work, otherwise I'll be very limited to start services at Aschaffenburg Hbf as the routes between the Gbf and the Hbf sidings are not correctly setup, making it impossible to couple a loco at Aschaffenburg Hbf sidings. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Siding 201 and 202 are functioning. I can continue!

Another follow up post after fiddling a whole day, three days on the counter with trying to fix this one service. I am now stuck on a puzzle of non-functional pieces of the tracks at Aschaffenburg Hbf making it impossible to couple the BR 185 at Aschaffenburg for services towards Laufach/Gemünden. If anyone wants to help solve this puzzle in a realistic way, please do so. I have added a schedule of what's happening.

    1. The BR365 pulled container train arrives from Aschaffenburg Hafen (single line to the south) and enters Aschaffenburg Hbf Sidings.
      • At ASB Hbf Sidings a locomotive coming from the east cannot couple to the formation, because there is a pathing issue between the eastern tracks and the sidings next to the passenger station. The locomotive gets stuck at a red shunt signal.
    2. I therefore let the BR365 push the container train into one of the sidings at Aschaffenburg Gbf (the eastern part of the map below).
      • The only available tracks to depart towards Laufach afterwards are tracks 201 and 202, the southern tracks at ASB Gbf, as a fatal crash happens when a train tries to path from tracks 203-211 towards the east.
      • A locomotive cannot couple to a formation on tracks 201 or 202 from the east, again because of a stuck red shunt signal.
      • A locomotive can couple to a formation on tracks 203-211 from the east.
    3. Another option is to stow the BR185 on track 203-211, and couple directly when pushing the formation from ASB Hbf. Again, a pathing issue prevents to enter an occupied track from ASB Hbf to Asb Gbf. Coupling a single loco is possible by starting the shunt move only one shunt signal away from these tracks, but this position is only available for tracks 203-211.
The only remaining option to continue this service towards Laufach I seem to have is push the formation on e.g. track 206, couple the locomotive there, then push the formation back to ASB Hbf in the West en start the new service to Laufach from there, pathing over tracks 201/202 or the main line. I really would like not to use this option, as it would mean the train enters ASB Hbf from the south, gets pushed to the eastern sidings, pushing it back to the west and finally departing towards the east again. This is very unrealistic.

So that leaves me with one final solution: leave the option to depart towards Laufach and just depart towards Frankfurt or Darmstadt.

You can find the map with some pointers below. If you like a good puzzle: please do try to provide me with a cleaner solution.

Another update: if you're looking forward to playing this timetable, you'll benefit a lot from having Dresden-Riesa, Dresden-Chemnitz, Hauptstrecke Rhein-Ruhr, München-Augsburg, Kassel-Würzburg and the DB BR 204 DLC's. You might want to pick up some of these now, as they are discounted up to 90% on the Steam Store at the moment.

I have now started filling the timetable with main line freight services while also gradually filling up Aschaffenburg Hafen. The route already feels more vibrant than ever and I've not even added 10% of the freight services. Currently I am close to 800 services. I'll try to provide a screen capture in the upcoming week to increase the appetite ;)

For the problem with tracks in Aschaffenburg Hbf, would it work gamewise to just pull the loco into the yard at the harbor? Then use the shunter to put it into the correct position and drop the train in that formation back at Hbf. Takes away a bit of the fun though.

I have thought about that, maybe I should just try to do it that way. For now I made Hafen services leave the map to the west. I don't think I have a way to shut down the electric loco in timetable mode though, so its pantograph will probably stay extended and it might throw up errors.

What we really need is a Dual Mode Vectron, or a Traxx with a last mile diesel.

Today I found some time to make a first video of my work on the MSB timetable. It's become a bit longer than expected, but enjoy it.

Another short update: I'm having a lot of fun bringing freight into the MSB. I am now gradually filling up the timetable with services that cross the map in all kinds of directions. I have now crossed the 5am start time mark (timetable starts at 2am) and have now added a little more than 900 services.

At first I thought passenger services were difficult because of the many stops etc. But being able to base these on a real life timetable made that actually easy compared to the freight services that should not delay any passenger service, have to interact with each other for shunting moves, should not block the mainline at the wrong time while moving over to the sidings and a lot of other constraints. This is really fun to do

I try to give as much variety as possible, so the player will always have to be vigilant for PZB action, e.g. for an unexpected stop at a siding while an ICE flies by.

I have calculated the maximum speed, PZB mode and brake setup for each service. It is added in the description. E.g:

Operate this container train from Aschaffenburg Hbf to Gemünden, where another driver will take over (PZB M, Vmax 105, Brake LL)

For the westbound services I also calculated a second Vmax when descending from the Spessartrampe, as this seriously reduces the safe operation speed. E.g:
(PZB U, Vmax 95 (SR: 80), Brake GP)

I could further divide the route in blocks with different maximum speeds (e.g. from Aschaffenburg to Heigenbrücken there are no downslopes, so the Vmax can be higher), but I decided this would become too cluttered with information.

The codes are explained in the DRA and KWG freight guides:
    PZB U, M or O
Vmax is clear and is also enforced by a service maximum speed of Vmax+1
    Brake:
    • PP: loco and cars in brake mode P
    • GP: loco in brake mode G, cars in brake mode P
    • LL: Loco and first five cars in brake mode G, rest in brake mode P
    • GG: loco and cars in brake mode P
I hope this will make operating trains on this route a bit more straightforward.

    I'll keep you posted.

Wonderful! One more data point I think would be helpful to know is the weight of the wagons. Are you adding the top speed to the start service instruction as well, so the AI will obey them?

I'll see how I can add the wagon weight. For mixed freight it's a bit difficult to provide this without cluttering the service description.

Yes I've added a Vmax+1 (to give a bit of leeway) speed limit to the start service instruction ;)

Just to clarify, I mean the total weight of all the wagons put together, not the weight of each individual wagon.

That's great. Don't want to see the AI driving a heavy steel train down the Spessart Ramp at 120 km/h.

    1. That's the weight of the whole train (including the locomotive), not just the wagons
    2. The pause menu is only available once you've started driving a service. You can read the description in the main menu before starting a service. See how it might be helpful to have some information available in both places?

A very short update today: I have just added the 1000th service to my Main Spessart Bahn Timetable. I still have an enormous job in front of me as I have only added the main freight services from 2am to 6:30am westbound and from 2am to 5am eastbound. I am now adding all westbound freight services first, as these are just straight through. The eastbound services will be filled after that so I see where the gaps for the return services of the banking locomotives are at Heigenbrücken and Laufach. I have now accumulated almost 700 hours in the editor. Not all of that was spent behind the screen as I have a suspicion that simulating the timetable is accounted for too, but it's still a lot of time considering that I only started using the editor shortly before Christmas.
Below a screenshot of the westbound freight schedule, including some AI services that pass through Gemünden from Würzburg towards Jossa and Fulda.

Just to be clear and manage expectations: I now have 1013 services including AI entries and exits, so the total number of playable services will be around 400-450 services. A banking operation going from Aschaffenburg to Gemünden consists of 7 services (5 playable) so these add up quite fast. I think I'll have about 700-800 playable services (including shunting, depot moves, banking operations...) when I'm finished.

Based on how fast the timetable is progressing I expect to need at least another month to finish everything. I'm continuing to work on it for at least an hour almost everyday at the moment, but e.g. this morning adding just 14 services took almost 2 hours because timing freight services with different speeds in between passenger services that cannot run late is quite challenging. Also the passenger services run close to but not exactly on an hourly schedule so every hour is different for the freight services too. :) I will release it to the broad public for free when it's finished. I'll keep you all posted here.

What I meant is that ICE Line 41 services can be played on Main Spessart Bahn the Asschaffenburg Lohr segment and HRR for the Duisburg-Bochum segment since it runs to/from Dormund

I have made a few services playable from Lohr to Aschaffenburg and will make a few playable in the other direction. Most of them are just AI services that only stop at Aschaffenburg. Making them all playable would be too unrealistic in my opinion. The ICE91 services (Dortmund/Köln-Wien) don't even stop at Aschaffenburg (as they stop at Hanau IRL) and just traverse the map. These are a nice challenge to make sure that no other service stands in their way ^_^

I have no release date scheduled yet, it will take at least another month to finish it and then I'll have to work out cooking and paking. So anywhere between mid-april and july-august seems realistic ;)

It's been a month since I last posted here: development is still ongoing. I have now finished about 50% of the westbound freight services, between 2am and 2pm. This includes AI freight services going north towards Rieneck and Jossa through Gemünden. Sadly the route network between Rieneck and Langenprozelten has not been set up correctly and results in the editor crashing when routing a service through them, so I cannot add freight services immediately going west from there. It's a pity but not game breaking.

I have also been optimising the passenger runs further to provide an even more immersive experience. The only passenger runs I haven't added yet are a few railtours and an occasional diverted IC and/or Nightjet service. Ideas for those are very much welcomed!

The Waigolshausen portal at Gemünden is frequently used for freight services from/to Schweinfurt and Bamberg in a realistic fashion: there are incoming time slots where outgoing services will wait at Gemünden for the single line to Waigolshausen becoming available and outgoing slots where the sidings at Gemünden get emptied towards Waigolshausen and cross over the mainline towards Würzburg.

I had already added the 2 am - 6 am eastbound freight services and will now fill that direction further until 2pm before focussing on westbound services again. Every hour is different, and there are lots of different types of services. I have already had much fun trying to keep heavy formations within safety limits while descending from the Spessart Rampe.

I am looking forward to the DB BR 218 locomotive, which will allow me to add direct services from Aschaffenburg Hafen from/to Frankfurt and Darmstadt and through freight services on the Maintalbahn towards Miltenberg.

Please keep giving feedback and let me know any wild or original idea you 'd want to see on the Main Spessart Bahn!

I think the NJ 420 drives from the HSL at Würzburg to Amsterdam and has a stop at Augsburg.

Hi all, I've had a very busy time at work and been on holliday for a few weeks without dev pc, so development stalled since May. But no worries: I'm definitely going to finish and release it when I'm finished and I have good hopes this might be possible by September now the DB BR 218 has been released. Don't shoot me if it's a little later, I'll keep you posted here.

    Thanks for the kind words!

Something I've recently discovered with this issue is sometimes it'll fall if you don't manually select which side the doors should open, this might be an issue with the older routes such as MSB and RSN. Worth a try!

Hi all, just a quick update on the MSB: I have picked up on it after my holidays and have begun building the DB BR 218 layer that will provide some freight runs towards Aschaffenburg Hafen as well as the Lohr Süd industrial site. The current state of the timetable:

    Complete:
    • ICE services (mostly AI) are layered in. I have two playable services in the morning from Lohr towards Aschaffenburg (with a fake extra stop) and will provide one extra in this direction in the evening. I will also provide 3 playable services in the other direction. (HMA required)
    • RB79/RE54/RE55 services between Aschaffenburg Hbf and Gemünden are complete. Most of them use the MSB 146 + Dosto's. A few are layered in if you have HRR for the BR 425 (only 4 or so, running from Gemünden to Lohr)
    • RB 88/RE87 services between Aschaffenburg Hbf and Aschaffenburg Süd are complete (Maintalbahn required)
    • AI layers: RB75 (Aschaffenburg > Darmstadt), RB5 & RE59 (Aschaffenburg > Frankfurt), RB 53 (Gemünden > Schlüchtern) (HRR required for the BR 425)
    • AI layer: RB50 (Gemünden > Schweinfurt) (MTB required)
    • Lohr Freight yard and Aschaffenburg Hafen freight operations, tied in with the mainline freight operations (DRA and MTB required)
    Work in progress:
    • DB BR 218 freight layer with Aschaffenburg Hafen and Lohr Süd operations (DB BR 218 and MAIN required)
    • Finishing the ICE layer (Switch to ICE-T? Replacing the last AI services by playable services)
    • Main freight layer (50% done Westbound, 25% done eastbound). The freight layer will be stocked with different types of freight services and I have chosen to add more freight services than there are in real life for the sake of (re)playability and to increase the possibility of some chaos developing when you are running late. I had implemented a lot of different stock from different addons, but I have now decided to split some of this up in different layers so people with less addons still have a nice timetable. For the full experience you 'll want MTB, LFR, DRA, DCZ, RSN and KWG (edit: and the BR 204, 363, 365 and MTB G6!). I have provided quite a few services with scenario-like exceptions to the regular mainline running, so I do recommend driving HUD-less and let you surprise by what the dispatcher has provided for you ;)
    To do:
    • Add a few diverted IC services between Aschaffenburg and Gemünden (sadly the route between Langenprozelten and the Rieneck portal to the north of Gemünden is bugged, so it is not possible to make them turn off earlier towards Fulda.). I will use the Expert DB BR 101 for this once the bugs related to it are fixed in the editor.
    • Add one or two Flixtrain services, just because I can.
    • Decide if I replace the existing ICE-services using HMA ICE 3 sets with the new ICE-T.
    • Add one or two EC services with the Öbb stock (SRM or SEMM required)
    • Add static stock along the route, on different layers.

Important: I am aware that not every service is implemented true to life. This is a conscious decision that I have taken to maximise the playability of this timetable:
    • The timetable is set in 2024, but the route has changed IRL. Consider this a "what if the Spesartrampe had never been replaced by tunnels" timetable. Passenger runs are running to the real life January 8th 2024 timetable at Aschaffenburg Hbf, but are slightly off towards Gemünden to account for the extra travel time between Laufach and Wiesthal.
    • I have added and will add some services that IRL don't run on the MSB (anymore), including Flixtrain, EC and diverted IC services. I think it would be a pity not to have them.
    • ICE services only stop at Aschaffenburg Hbf IRL, but I have provided a few that do stop at Lohr too after entering the route at the Nantenbach curve (and back) so the player can enjoy riding the MSB with an ICE service. Also some RE/RB services have some wait time at Lohr (about 2 minutes) to let the ICE towards Würzburg overtake them, as the two-three minutes of extra travel time between Laufach and Wiesthal makes them an obstacle for the ICE services and everybody knows that ICE services always run on time IRL ;)
    • There are a lot more shunting services at Aschaffenburg Hafen and Lohr Industrial Sidings than IRL. Otherwise these places would be very dull.
    • Not my fault, but there is a very small section of track (a few centimeters at most) at Aschaffenburg Hbf that has incorrectly been marked as unelectrified. This means that on many freight services your main circuit breaker will trip as you leave Aschaffenburg Sidings as I have chosen to make most services join the mainline right after departing instead of routing via the eastern sidings at Aschaffenburg. Just be aware of this and re-enable your power to be able to continue.
I think it is important that I point this out so you're not disappointed because it's not exactly true to life, but for me I made the right decisions to increase the replayability and diversity of this timetable as much as possible.

I think the ICE 3 services should be ICE 3, the ICE T ICE T and the ICE 1 ICE 1 if that's possible. But please not all ICE T. One idea would be to have one service in each direction per ICE type to have the extra stop in Lohr so you have the option to try all of them.

As you can disable layers in TSW 5 that's far less of a problem. Anyone who doesn't want to have those trains can just disable the layer.

This might also be an option for all the other fictional additional services. What about putting them on extra layers so when someone only wants to have the 100% realistic experience they can disable the extra services?

Good idea. I'll include it that way.

Most of the services are on different layers, but I'll try to maximise this where possible. Sometimes it's not possible because of interaction of e.g. the same shunter with multiple formations, but thanks to hints from mkraehe#6051 I have managed to get clean splits between services that require different DLC's.

Of course that's not always achievable but might be worth to keep it in mind.
Also just theoretically "realistic" services wouldn't interact with the extra services. But I can see that this might not always be achivable.

I have finished layering in the BR 218. Now I seem to have a new challenge when simulating the timetable: once in a while a random default MSB Doppelstock + 146.2 service gets stuck on opening its doors. It's always a different service and these services simulated just fine without any issues before. Luckily resimulating the timetable most of the time fixes the issue. If anyone has any pointers what could be causing this issue: please let me know.

Since installing TSW5 I am suddenly unable to simulate my timetable anymore:
    Code:
    LogWindows: === Critical error: ===
    LogWindows:
    LogWindows: Fatal error!
    LogWindows:
    LogWindows: Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW
This makes it undoable to continue working on the timetable as I am completely unable to check for and sort out any blocking/delaying instructions.

I was making great progress in the past weeks, but I have now decided to pause development until DTG sorts out the issues with the updated editor. I was so excited when I learned that we would finally be able to cook and pack our mods for the community, but I should've known that I should have expected this functionality to function at the earliest when TSW6 is announced next year.

I'm writing this with great disappointment, hence the rather harsh decision. According to the Epic Games launcher I have worked for 1067 hours on this timetable (including simulation time), meticulously fitting in all kinds of interesting little quirks to bring this timetable to life and provide unique experiences to players. I hope to continue working on the timetable when I learn that DTG fixed the editor, but I am unwilling to put anymore time in it until this gets sorted.

It’s not ideal but if you uninstall all tsw5 stuff you should be able to resume working in tsw4 editor like normal. Worked for me anyways
I wonder if you could just install tsw5 and tsw5 editor on a separate drive? or just a different folder if you want to keep both versions.

I'm still able to simulate the timetable fine, although, I do occasionally get crashes when it's loading the simulation. Have you tried it a few times? Second attempt seems to work for me.

I've started to continue the work now the editor seems partially fixed. I've now completely finished the BR218 services, and have started to split out the ICE services into different layers. The ICE-T has taken over the Frankfurt - Wien (ICE 91) services perfectly, with 4 driveable services (2 in each direction). I am having an issue with the ICE 1 however. I seem unable to give let it run on the MSB because it seems to have issues with the electrification of the network. If I replace it with an ICE3(M) or ICE-T, this service compiles just fine.

The exact issue is as follows:
    Code:
Unable to find path for AI ICE728 at instruction 2, waypoint -1 (No route matching electfification requirements) 2. Stop at Aschaffenburg Platform 8 (Dispatch Beyond GoTo) AI ICE728
Does anyone have an idea if the BR 401 has different internal electrification standards than the ICE 3? I will replace the ICE1 with an ICE3 for the moment until I find a solution.

Edit: the ICE1 is running fine in the other direction, it only has issues towards Würzburg.

Have you checked the pathing of the train? I had a similar issue with the Vectron on Niddertalbahn as AI. I created a new RVD for the Vectron without electrification but it caused issues on other routes, I changed it so it wasn't visible which fixed it. You can turn off electrification checking for the timetable I believe.

The pathing is exactly the same for any ICE service (and I have even replaced the ICE1 by other EMU's on these very services), so if it gives issues for the ICE1, it should do so for any other electric train I guess? The Würzburg portal might be bugged as it is not used on the default timetable, but still I find it strange that other services don't have issues. I am mainly using TOD3 formations though, maybe the electrification settings have changed in TSW4/5 compared to pre TSW3 routes. I'll dig into it a bit more and if needed try to find a "don't check for electrification" solution, but I'd prefer not to do so.

I have found the issue. There is a very small section (not even visible in network edit mode > OHLE tool) on track 8 entering Aschaffenburg Hbf that has an issue with electrification. The strange thing is that other services are unaffected, but the ICE1 doesn't like this small section of bugged track. I will route the ICE1 services around this section. Other services (BR 425, BR 146, Doppelstock, ICE3, ICE-T, ...) are unaffected by this issue, but they might trip their circuit breakers because they lose power for maybe a few milimeters of track.

I had freight services trip their circuit breakers there before, when leaving the sidings at Aschaffenburg Hbf and entering track 8, but I didn't know track 8 itself was also affected.

And one last update on this: I have decided to scrap the ICE1 as I'm experiencing too many issues with pathing and electrification errors. I'd have to path the BR 401 via wrong line running out of Aschaffenburg as it seems to only accept the route from platform 6 to the northern track towards Hösbach (and back). This is impossible if I want the timetable to run to real life schedule so I've ditched it. I think it's really strange that this seems to be the only train having issues with electrification on the route. Let's hope I don't encounter similar issues once I start implementing IC (BR 101 Expert) and Flixtrain (BR 193) services (next on my todo list).

The timetable will allow players to operate the BR 403 (ICE 3) and BR 411 (ICE-T) on a total of 10 services between Aschaffenburg Hbf and Lohr Bf. All real life ICE services are present, mostly as AI on line 41 (Dortmund Hbf <=> München Hbf) and line 91 (Frankfurt(M) Hbf <=> Wien Hbf). A few services (originating or terminating in Köln) are planned with the BR 406, but only as AI. Most services on line 91 don't stop at all on the map, as they only stop in Hanau between Frankfurt and Würzburg in real life. I expect players to be able to start an ICE service on the Frankfurt-Fulda route, and continue it on the MSB timetable. Alas, no route hopping between Hanau and Aschaffenburg, so returning to the main menu will be a mandatory "go via".

Sad news: the Flixtrain vectron encounters the same electrification issue as the ICE 1, so I will also exclude it from the timetable.
