The railway line from Munich to Nuremberg, passing through Ingolstadt, is one of the most important and efficient train routes in Bavaria. It connects major cities and offers a variety of train types, including regional trains, ICE trains, and S-Bahn services. The almost 180km route would make an excellent addition to TSW 5 as it combines diverse landscapes, important junctions, and different types of trains.

    1. Rail network and available trains

The route offers an ideal mix of various train types:

    • ICE connections: The ICE (Intercity Express) provides a fast connection between Munich and Nuremberg. The route is part of the high-speed line between Nuremberg and Munich, making it one of the fastest rail connections in Germany. The travel time between Munich and Nuremberg is about 1 hour, with a stop in Ingolstadt.
    • Regional trains (RE/RB): These trains provide a slower but crucial service for commuters and regional travelers. A journey on the regional train from Munich to Nuremberg takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, connecting important regional cities like Ingolstadt, Pfaffenhofen, and others.
    • S-Bahn: Munich's S2 line operates on part of this route and is especially important for commuters. It connects Munich Ostbahnhof with Petershausen, serving numerous stations along the way.
    2. Key cities along the route

The Munich – Nuremberg route via Ingolstadt is of strategic importance as it links key Bavarian cities:

    • Munich: As the capital of Bavaria, Munich is the center of rail traffic in southern Germany. Munich Hauptbahnhof is a major hub for ICE, regional, and S-Bahn connections.
    • Ingolstadt: A historic city on the Danube and an important industrial center. The stop at Ingolstadt Hauptbahnhof allows travelers to explore the region or change trains.
    • Nuremberg: Bavaria's second-largest city and a historic cultural center. Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof is also a major hub in the rail network. In addition to these three major cities, the trains also pass through smaller but important stations such as:
    • Pfaffenhofen
    • Petershausen
    • Allersberg (in regional services)
    3. The S-Bahn Line S2: Munich Ostbahnhof – Petershausen

A significant part of this route is the S-Bahn Line S2, which is essential for local transportation in the Munich area. This line connects the city of Munich with its northern suburbs and is a vital artery for commuters. The travel time from Munich Ostbahnhof to Petershausen is about 50 minutes. The S-Bahn stations on this route include:

    • Munich Ostbahnhof
    • Rosenheimer Platz
    • Isartor
    • Marienplatz
    • Karlsplatz (Stachus)
    • Hauptbahnhof
    • Hackerbrücke
    • Donnersbergerbrücke
    • Laim
    • Obermenzing
    • Untermenzing
    • Allach
    • Karlsfeld
    • Dachau
    • Hebertshausen
    • Röhrmoos
    • Vierkirchen Esterhofen
    • Petershausen
    4. The significance of the S-Bahn City-Tunnel

The S-Bahn City-Tunnel between Rosenheimer Platz and Hauptbahnhof is a key part of Munich’s S-Bahn infrastructure. It provides a fast and efficient connection through the city center and facilitates transfers between different S-Bahn lines as well as connections to long-distance trains. Without this tunnel, travel times would be much longer, and the S-Bahn's capacity would be significantly reduced.

    5. Travel times and train frequencies

    • ICE Munich – Nuremberg (via Ingolstadt): Around 1 hour, with a stop in Ingolstadt.
    • Regional train Munich – Nuremberg: Around 2 hours and 30 minutes, with multiple stops along the route.
    • S-Bahn S2 Munich Ostbahnhof – Petershausen: Around 50 minutes.
    6. Important details along the route

In addition to the cities and stations mentioned above, there are several interesting details along the route:

    • High-speed section: The segment between Munich and Ingolstadt allows speeds of up to 300 km/h for ICE trains.
    • Ingolstadt hub: A key interchange for travelers heading towards Regensburg and Augsburg.
    • Scenic diversity: Travelers can enjoy the Bavarian landscape, with views of rivers, hills, and forests, making the route visually appealing.
    Conclusion

The Munich to Nuremberg rail route via Ingolstadt offers a versatile and dynamic rail network, optimally serving both fast long-distance connections with the ICE and regional and local traffic. For TSW5, this route would be a valuable addition, providing players with a diverse and realistic environment due to its scenic variety, different train types, and the importance of the Munich City-Tunnel. Integrating S-Bahn, regional trains, and high-speed trains would allow players to experience a wide range of scenarios and challenges.

Very carefully put together route suggestion. I think Matt's advice on TSW suggestions is having an impact. Everyone is now making more effort and not just throwing out buzzwords. ;)

Since Munich-Augsburg already exists, route hopping in the Bavarian capital would even be possible. It would also be a very long route, like Würzburg-Kassel, with Ingolstadt as a major stopover. Since all the suggested trains already exist, it would be a pure route and landscaping project that could be packed full of layers and timetables.

The ICE service with an hour of high speed is comparable to KWG, but a two-and-a-half hour RE journey is a bit long. Nuremberg is definitely very interesting because the history of the railway in Germany began here in 1835 and is also an important DB museum location. If you just made it Munich-Ingolstadt, that would be enough for a standard TSW route length. Nuremberg could theoretically also be included in another route.

Since December 2020, the new NIM Express has also been running on the route at speeds of up to 200 km/h, with new Dostos and the BR102 from Skoda. Previously, the BR101 ran here with former IC carriages, including the control car in traffic red.

With the Skoda train set this would be something very nice! Before they go back to München they should optimise Hbf heavily, was mentioned by Matt in one of a (i think) Roadmap stream, that this was a must do before they could go back to München Hbf!

I love those, make no mistake, but there are already plans to get em out of service cos of their technical unreliability

anyway, would love this route, absolutely :) finally able to stretch legs of ICEs - tho I would appreciate higher level of detail for the cab and operation of ICE, gameplay-wise :)

Sounds good, even if the S2 will be cut at Munich central (not Hackerbrücke, please!!). Of course, Ostbahnhof with the city tunnel would be a nice addition. The "RE200" can also be included, if the IC-coaches get the repaint. In the Nürnberg area there can also be some S-Bahnservice between Fischbach and central station be included. If I remember correctly there are running 1442 trainsets.

Yeah really sad they're already being replaced, absolutely crazy! They look both so good imo, so would love to see them coming to TSW!

well, I guess Skoda underestimated DB's super tough quality control (I guess we all remember how they halted their ICE4 orders until the manufacturers re-did some body-welds and such, and in the meantime they restricted all ICE4s to 265 kph :D )
