Hey, I'm Ben and I want to tell you a bit about what I think about DCZ after re-watching the stream later since I wasn't there live (that's the reason I couldn't ask anything) Let's start with the star of the show, the DB BR 612. It looks great. The visuals are on-point. Even the coupling covers! The sound is good on TSG's level of detail, I love the implementation of some kind of "Ebula" and the tilting self-test. As someone who used this train over a range of 5 years almost daily, I know what it sounds like, and that's on point. And I not only mean the in-Cab sound, I mean the idling sound as well, and also the sound when you walk as a passenger through the aisles. They even nailed the sliding door sound. I guess I need to go over "why sound is so important to me" really quick, 'cause that's a point later in this as well. Okay, let's start with you're at a station and want to accelerate, you just release the brakes and let's go. But how much Throttle do you apply. You read the instruments for that, right? Good and trained drivers would hear that engine appropriately louder, or -doesn't necessarily have to be louder- any change in the sound, really. Now, when you're braking, a driver applies brake and feels how the train behaves with that braking setting (A feel which we are not able to have in a PC-Game) so what are you doing? Most of us (me included) look at the dials, which are telling me the settings I have my brakes applied to, then switch to the station and it's a back and forth every time I adjust the brakes. TL;DR: We need good sound to compensate for the sense of feel which we doesn’t have in a Simulator. This doesn’t say anything negative about the 612. In fact, I like the sound of it. The 612 is a good Product! Now let’s go about the 185 and the reason why I probably won’t buy this DLC. See, I’m freight only in TSW2, and I got hyped a tiny bit about the Railpool 185 before the preview stream because it’s finally not a red 185. It’s still a 185, which bugged my ‘cause we have more than enough of them already and there are other freight locos which are popular as well (151,152,189 and 193 e.g.) But I was like, hey, okay, I guess they’re using the DRA 185 sound since this is… “Not great, not terrible” but it was okay-ish. Oh boy, got I fooled… We got the MSB 185 sound AGAIN?! I MEAN, WHAT THE YIKES [- Protagonist edit] Sorry, that needed to be. It’s widely known (Ig DTG does know about this as well) why we “hate” the 187 (copied 185) sounds and they’re still bringing it? It’s a no buy for me, and this is a really sad thing since I got all hyped up about driving freight there, and the car train one could see at the exit of Dresden looked nice as well. If there are substitutions enabled for other freight locos, I might think about buying this, but that’s about all. DTG, if you’re reading this, we need a new freight loco which isn’t a 185. I gave a few examples in my text which could be used, but if we get anything that’s not a Traxx and not a 182 again seems fine. Now, a quick few words about the night lighting. It’s supposed to be dark. I get it. But that’s too dark. Not if you’re comparing it to pictures, I get that as well. But you know what, there’s a biological reason for why it seems darker to us on pictures or videos than it is in reality. The German word for it is “Dunkelblendung” Your eyes are probably adjusted to the brightness around a day. I mean. If you’re out at midnight your eyes have adjusted to this and you can perfectly see there. Now take pictures. You can’t see sh*it on those. Why? Well, for the same reason the lightning in TSW2 is in theory realistic but in practice unplayable. The night lighting on DRA compensated for this, and it was great. That’s about all. Have a nice weekend and thank you if you did read until this point. Edit: Typo
Ill get the dlc and was also impressed by the stream. Why old sounds are implemented in a "new locomotice", when there is an updated version...., i have no idea wha the heck dtg was thinking about doing this..., especially after the 187 fiasco. While there are still 6 days to get this right , maybe matt can give an answer why the decision was made.
Yeah, the 185 sound setup bugs me too. Its not like the sounds per se are wrong, they are just simply setup wrong. Also the mixing is wrong and unrealistic. What bugs me the most is that traction engine sounds are tied to the speed and not to how much power you apply. I dont know why DTG decided to reuse this sound setup. Its just bad.
Still doesnt change the wrong setup. You can change the sounds, but not how the sounds are set up. SO regardless of the sounds being used, stuff like traction engine sounds tied to the speed cant be changed by a mod except when someone can change the complete sound stuff of the 185.6 with the one fro the 185.5.
I guess the fact we do already talk about that before the route is even out, the op nailed it. ----- We got the MSB 185 sound AGAIN?! I MEAN, WHAT THE CRIKEY [- Protagonist edit] ---- The 612 and the route looks really nice, also looking forward to the rp185, even when we get another "not updated" version, which doesnt make any sense too me.
My guess is that, given the existence of two BR 185 models, they went with the model with two pantographs, since the 185.5 has four and that would be wrong for the Railpool
Well, technically the 185.6 is the same Traxx model as the 185.2 irl. Still doesnt change the sound stuff.
Can anyone post a link to the stream archive? I'm being particularly thick this evening and can't find one... Thanks.
Well I am just about sold on this. The engine sound on the 612 as I think someone else may have stated is uncannily like one of our UK 220/221 Voyager units, which I actually quite like. The route is looking nice too. Subject to no glaring errors being revealed from the first buyers it will more than likely be going straight in my collection.
I’m already trying to sweet talk the wife, so soon after my big spend in the Xmas sale! Just hope there is a reasonable gap to the UK route (not too fussed about HSC at present). Edit: I told the wife I would watch Hunger Games tonight with her... New route now pre-ordered (NB: There's a 10% pre order discount).
