Your route is looking really good. It is always great to see WIP screenshots where you can see how the creator is actually putting things together.
Even better that you are also continuing down the freeware route. Nothing wrong with payware, but the restrictions/demands that payware puts onto things usually ends with walls being put up between creator and community.
So, for what it's worth, double thumbs up from me :D

So, after I haven´t updated you all (because I created the RVV files etc. for the 5022 last week and worked on the Rosenheim-Salzburg Scenery Enhancements), I can happily share my progress from this week:
    10.3.2024_1.jpg
Here, you can see the "Maria-Theresia-Hochhaus", one of Wels´ tallest buildings.

    10.3.2024_2.jpg
    Mühlbach

    10.3.2024_3.jpg
The railway bridge over the Mühlbach. In the distant, you can see the "Ledererturm", one of Wels´ most famous landmarks. It was first mentioned in 1326 and contains nowadays a Christkindl-Post Office, which can be visited during christmas time.
    10.3.2024_4.jpg 10.3.2024_5.jpg
A view over the area of Wels Messe (Convention halls). Here is the "Welser Volksfest" too (a fair) and in the distance, in front of the tennis fields mid-left, is the Welios Science Center (a science museum). Behind the tennis fields is the only bridge, which connects Wels to Thalheim with a road.

Also, I have placed lamps and lights:

Cars can also drive at roads and stop at level crossings, but I have no screenshots for that unfortunately:|

Enjoy these new screenshots, I try keeping posting every sunday!:)

I don't want to spam this thread regularly but I follow your project since the first post and I'm impressed with every new insight. The assets look great and I hope the new Austrian routes from DTG provide you with good new ones.
I'm really looking forward to drive this route when it's finished. I hope you keep up the good work and are then satisfied with your results, so this is just a motivation boost for you :)

Let's not ask these kind of questions, shall we? There is no reason to put any kind of pressure on the dev who does this as a passion project. It will be ready when it's ready.

Well, I have an idea when some milestones will be reached, but for now I don´t want to think about them too much as I don´t want to stress myself too much!:)

Yes, it is! I´m often also impressed how assets look when they´re combined in that way. It´s also very motivating to solve a question or a problem in the editor like I did with the car system and to share my progress with the community! The last motivation factor is, that there are so many places, roads etc. I have already visited in real life and to see it in TSW (4 - hopefully:)) is incredibly amazing!

    New week, new shots:
    16.3.2024_1.jpg 16.3.2024_2.jpg 17.3.2024_1.jpg 17.3.2024_2.jpg 17.3.2024_3.jpg
As you can maybe see, the east side of Wels is now (FINALLY!) finished, now it´s the west side´s turn! By the way, the last picture shows three of Wels´ landmarks in one! :)

So, this week a lot happened:
I was now on a photo tour, photographing all bigger stations along the route and I´ve now corrected all track errors (thanks to Google Earth showing old pictures of track!:()
In addition, the complete scenery of Wels in now FINISHED!!!
    Have a look:
    24.3.2024_1.jpg 24.3.2024_2.jpg 24.3.2024_3.jpg
You will be able to walk on this little path and over to bridge to Thalheim!:)
    24.3.2024_4.jpg
The Zoo of Wels! Maybe not so good-looking as other places on the map, but it´s quite hard to build a zoo without any fitting assets and only with cows!
    24.3.2024_5.jpg
The view from Thalheim to Wels, as you can see I´ve also added, distant mountains in the north!:)

(This week I´ve also shared a Furry-Express livery in the Creators Club for the Vectron!)

So, this week I´ve built the east side of Thalheim an I also added a little viewpoint, from where you can watch the scenery of Wels and Thalheim! 31.3.2024_1.jpg 31.3.2024_2.jpg 31.3.2024_3.jpg 31.3.2024_4.jpg 31.3.2024_5.jpg

I don´t know if I can make a lot of progress next week, because my PC gets an hard drive-extension, but I will continue building as soon as possible!;)

I also would like to mention something neither others nor even you emphasized on, which I really do appreciate a lot.

You seem to very good at 3D modelling. I've noticed that you already created so many custom assets. And they look very, very well.

My favorites are the "Maria-Theresia" skyscraper building and the Welios Science Centre building with the artific designer stripes (even shining at night). The overpass at the main station plus the building right next to it is also very good.

I did a quick search on Google Earth and they all look almost exactly like that reality. That's unbelievable!

How do you gained your knowledge in 3D creation and what tools you are using?
And how many did you already created?

That you just create these without even mentioning that it was a hassle seems for me that you must be like a professional 3D artist in this regard.

I keep the images as thumbnails so that it doesn't confuse anyone reading the thread with your WIP screenshots.

Thanks, but I think I will have to dissappoint you!;)
Wels Hbf is completely built of VBRG glass walls or UE4s blocks (which you can get from the left screen menu). The only error at Wels Hbf is that there aren't the holes at the overpass, but I'll have a look at it in the future, as well as making the platforms explorable. I also think of building the interior but thats very far in the future, as I want to build the route itself first.
The skyscraper is/are just two of DTGs assets stacked (but they're very similar I think):)
The Welios is also built of UE4s blocks (but only the backside:o) That is a building-style I want to keep at every iconic building, as I'm absolutely not patient enough to model a house for ? weeks and to slow down the build-flow for my route. But I'm fine with that and I think it reached it's goal, when you recognize the buildings:cool: (which you can't say about all of DTG/...-routes' buildings)

So, I hope I did destroy all of the magic;)

Little news for everyone: I couldn't do anything this week as my PCs hard drive is being extended and I still wait for getting it back.

Ah, okay. But looks super realistically nonetheless!

    A few questions.

I think with UE4 blocks you mean the Geometry Brushes, right? I also wanted to use them, but once I did a bit of research about them in the UE4 documentation, I figured out that these nowadays only should be used as a kind of placeholder in early stage level design, because if I remember correctly they consume quite a lot of performance and therefore should be replaced with static meshes later on.

How do did you created the lighting stripes on the Welios Centre which shine at night, though? Specific individual light actors?

Yes, I've noticed the missing holes and thought about whether you would cave these in at a later stage, but is absolutely fine I think. Unless you're not a local resident, one wouldn't notice the difference.

I don´t use Geometry Brushes, I use the Cubes under "Basic" (I couldn´t remember the name yesterday, I attached a photo). After placing them, I give them one of DTGs textures like concrete or wood. I didn´t place that much, so I think the editor should handle it, in PIE everything worked fine when I tested it. For the light I tiped in "light" or "lamp" in the VBRG folder search bar and then something like Canopy light or that came. I placed it verticaly along the black lines and then they shine automatically when I set the daytime to 23 00 00. As for the holes, I have already a plan to do it without carving out every hole seperately.:)

Thank you very much for the elaborate answer.

BTW, I also have a tip for you. Well, or even two. It's regarding your screenshots.

    1. If you select the viewport and press Ctrl + Shift + T (or alternatively just go into the viewport menu and deselect "Show Toolbar") you can hide the tools within the viewport and can show the scenery a bit better I think.

    2. The other one is something I noticed in a few of your screenshots. I think short before you made the screenshot you did "Save All". Why is this important?

Well, because if you click on Save All, the landscape tiles are saved and thereafter the terrain is regenerated. When this happens, the landscape is for a short period of time roughly rastered into cubes (a bit like Minecraft). And these cubes, I can see in some of your screenshots.

So my advice: Wait a few seconds until the terrain is fully regenerated and then take the screenshot.

Thanks for the first tip! I didn´t knew that. :o
As for the second one, this is not my fault. The LIDAR data I downloaded for the route is from the Austrian 10-m source from Matinakbary´s Editor Documentation. I always have to smooth the terrain everywhere, which makes the process a little bit longer...:|
Anyways, thanks for the tips, I appreciate them very much!:)

So you say the Lidar data is permanent like that? That's weird and as I can guess really annoying. It definitely should not be like that.

But I think it's not the resolution of the Lidar data, which can be the cause of this.

I worked with 30-Meter SRTM data (well, it's not Lidar but in the end an equal height profile but which is way more gross) and there are no such cubes in it. Maybe a wrong coded Lidar data set?

But well, at least you got the 10-Meter resolution.

Do you know that there has been made an EU law which forces the member states to provide their Lidar to the public for free?
I don't know how or when that affects the Lidar data for Austria, but in Germany it is estimated for get into effect up from 9th of June this year. Don't know if it will be similar in Austria.

But if it's case, consider updating your 10-Meter resolution with the highest Lidar quality available once it's out for the public. Maybe the issue with the cubes is then also gone.

So, after I got my PC back and the editor wasn´t able to launch last weekend, I got some interesting news:
The Semmeringbahn live stream awakend a desire in me to watch the Bmz´s roofs from the overpass in Wels Hbf. So I expanded and rebuilt the track at the rear end of Wels Hbf, so that you can make shunting operations with the ÖBB 1116! I will also make Wels Hbf´s platforms more explorable.
    21.4.2024_5.jpg
I also managed to progress with the scenery in Thalheim...

If you can build a .pak file, www.trainsimcommunity.com would be more than happy to host this route for you. That way PC players can enjoy it

Full disclosure, I help run that website. ;)

I think your project has a good scale, not too big. As long as you don't get into that perfectionist cycle which won't let you finish stuff, I see a good chance of you being the first one. It doesn't have to be perfect on release, and maybe people wanna join in and help with adding scenery by adding layers which you could then incorporate.

Another week passed, another pictures were taken:
    28.4.2024_1.jpg 28.4.2024_2.jpg 28.4.2024_3.jpg
Thalheim is now finished and now I´m building the scenery up to Schauersberg...
    28.4.2024_4.jpg
Also, at Wels Hbf, I have now made the holes into the overpass and changed the floor to black. I would have liked to build teleports from platform 1 to the overpass, but the editor is missing some line graph functions in the blueprint for that...:| 28.4.2024_5.jpg
The east side of Wels Hbf is also progressing...

Funny things: When I tested in PIE, trains did drive through each other at crossovers, after that I have found the function in the editor to make proper crossovers:)
I have also a tip for you, if you want to build platforms: Type "AllowClimbing" into the component tags of a platform actor, then you can climb up by pressing E in PIE. That is what I have found out during improving Wels Hbf.

matinakbary The grass on the tracks is meant to be there:) (You speculated in your video if it will be there at release or not)

Although I´m concerned about the editor in the future and if the game is able to recognize my route, I continue building. I hope, that my worries are unnecessary...:|

    Also some photo mode shots:
(textures are sometimes a catastrophy, the editor really lagged that day:|)

This week I could make my biggest step in scenery progress (Actually because there are many trees) and I also built a bit of the scenery of the Wels Hbf extension. 5.5.2024_1.jpg 5.5.2024_2.jpg 5.5.2024_3.jpg 5.5.2024_4.jpg 5.5.2024_5.jpg

I´ve now also started building the timetable (For now only the AI passenger services) and asked myself a question: What train should I use for the Westbahn services? I have made a list which train I use as a replacement as TSW doesn´t have all ÖBB trains I need:
    • 5047 -> 5022
    • Railjet -> 1116+7xBmz
    • 4744/4746 "Cityjet" -> 4024 (sadly in old livery)
    • 1144+CS-coaches -> 4024
    • DB Stadler KISS IC2 -> BR101+4/6xIC-coaches
    • NJ coaches -> normal Bmzs
    • Westbahn ->???

The westbahn uses Stadler KISS so you could use your german idea. I'm gong to try and change the SBB FLIRT to a 6 coach one and turn it into a KISS without it being a dosto sadly

That´s a really good idea! I was concerned about it being a one-floor train but on the other side the acceleration sounds make if feel like a Stadler KISS train! When you converted the FLIRT into a KISS, could you please inform me or send me a link to download the mod? Thank you in advance!:)

Today I experimented with the daytime to test the timetable. I randomly thought "Just make screenshots of these stunning lighting!" and there you go! 6.5.2024_5.jpg 6.5.2024_3.jpg 6.5.2024_2.jpg 6.5.2024_1.jpg

It´s easter egg-time! 6.5.2024_4.jpg Maybe someone will find the easter eggs here...;)

I saw you make some great process on Wels Hbf. The holes we discussed about earlier are there. Looks really great.

P.S. I think I found the easter egg. And maybe you improved something which DTG miss out on the last and recently released Semmeringbahn?

Anyways, not sure whether all of this is true, but just as an assumption I would say you dived deeper into modelling in the last weeks for sure.

    Hello FreddieTheShepherd,
you did and do really nice Work and the pictures you share are really promising. The only thing I mad about the lack of driveable vehicles. There is only the austrian D Classic. It would be rather nice to have more choice. Therefore I have a suggestion. Linz ist just a stonethrew away. Could you perhaps make a extension to Linz. Then you could integrate long- disance trains, regional trains, freight trains and others to the driveable fleet. It would also affect your mainroute as some services go from Grünau im Almtal all the way to Linz. I don't know how hard that is? I'm not in it is just a suggestion. I would be happy If you think about it. I have lot of respect what you just do!
    Greetings

Yes, the easter egg was the 5144 (and also the 111 as IRL there is the 1010 in modern livery and I thought the 111 looks similar from the far:))

Well, I'm really sorry but as I am only one person, it would be too much work for me ( and I would really like to extend!) Anorher reason is, that my motto for rhis route is "going from city into the mountains" and extending to Linz would break that a little bit I think! But I really aporecciate your idea and maybe it will be my second project:love: ( If I still have motivation in 1-2 years...:|)

This week, my project got honored by getting mentioned in the roadmap! I was very happy about that!

DTG Alex I would appreciate it if you mention my project in the next roadmap where you want to make an overview of the current projects as you said in the roadmap stream:)

And as every Sunday - this week´s progress:

    1. The timetable is growing...
    12.5.2024_5.jpg
This is only 1/3 of all services I made so far:)

    2. Scenery reaches now almost Schauersberg station:

some of those pics give me Wien - Alberner Hafen vibes... there are sections of track leading to the small freight harbor there, with 10 kmh restricted speed (some of the track + switches appear to be in major disrepair), but it still looks cool kinda:

This looks amazing already!!!!! I got a couple questions, if thats ok ;)
    - What Route are the asserts from that you are using?
    - What Tracks are you using? They have this nicer light gray gravel, instead of the standard Brown Stuff
    - And Basically, how does your Route looks so amazing good? Parts of my Route still look like LOVE, do you have any Tips for me?

    Thanks you sooooooooooo much :)

    Have a wonderful Sunday

Sure, I like to answer any questions!:)
    • I mainly use the Vorarlberg assets, sometimes also Sememringbahn and Salzburg-Rosenheim assets. I also have DRA, HMA, HBK and MAIN in my "asset catalouge" but I rarely use them.
    • I use a track type from Vorarlberg that is named something with "wood" (I can´t remember the exact name but it´s one of the standard VBRG track types, beginning with LBZ (for Lindau-Bludenz I think))
    • Well, sometimes it depends on the route, but there are some tips I can tell:
      • I use a "grass_short" asset (I think its called like this, it rather looks like plants and not like grass) as foliage and paint it over the tracks in combination with normal grass, so the tracks look overgrown and not maintenanced for years:)
      • When I enter a new area, I always edit the landscape first. Then, I place all buildings and then I place hedges, fences and other details. Then, I paint the landscape and then cover all green spaces with grass. the transitions between track and grass are covered with the bespoke short grass.
      • I work at different fronts, depending on the day. On Monday and Tuesday, I worked at the Wels-extension and from Wednesday on, I worked on the area published today. One thing that I always do is that I create 3-4 AI services for Wels Hbf every day, so that someday the AI timetable is finished, although I built at the route on the same day. That keeps motivation up I would say:)
      • Sometimes, its better that you study your "asset-catalouge". It saves so much time when you see a building in Google Earth and you think "I already know what I´m going to place here". Then, you just have to type the right name in and there you go.
      • Bushes. Bushes are so important I think. I just looked up one of your route´s pictures back in February and one of the most actual and I think that a lot of bushes would ne nice. Especially under trees and along the trackside, bushes that are "knee-high" are good placefillers and give the route more wildlife (I´ve attached two pictures, the first with areas in your route, where I recommend the bushes, the second which shows the bushes I mean) I don´t want to insult you, it´s just a recommondation bush-love.png bush-love2.png
      • A good mix of trees is also very good. I use near the tracks a kind of apple tree which isn´t one and then 4-5 different kinds of dediduos trees which all look similar but aren´t. That keeps the forest "wild"
      • The last tip I can give is...imagine the day when the route is finished. You open TSW4 (or how it´s called then:)), see your route and select an ordinary service in there. Then, you drive like on any other route in the game and think "Wow, I just built that". For me, that is the motivation or even the spirit that keeps me motivated for opening the editor every day and building anything that comes next. There are also the artistic things I´m reall excited for, like writing a manual to the route or creating the key art for it (As I´m a very creative person I really like that, my Fursona (My avatar you can see in my profile picture) is also drawn by me. On top of that come all the memories with the route I had in real life, is it trainspotting at Wels Hbf or going to Grünau by train with my grandparents when I was 6, that makes sometimes a deeper personal connection in me that wants to be honored.
So, I think that was a lot to read. If you still have any question or want to know more, feel free to ask. Although I am not good at explaining, I try to do my best!
