Microsoft store on Xbox is safest bet to purchase Digital games for X/S. Or I recommend you subscribe to Xbox game's pass ultimate.
The X|S symbol denotes that it's enhanced for Series X|S (like TSW2 is), or that it is X|S exclusive (in terms of Xbox Consoles), like Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) is. If there are games that have seperate editions for Xbox One and X|S, go for the latter. Just incase the XONE version doesn't work on X|S, even if it's cheaper.
I think there are like, three mid-tier publishers (Off the top of my head I can name Aspyr and 505) who have released games outside of Smart Delivery, and so far know of only two games distributed by big publishers (Tony Hawk remaster and Tales of Arise) to not automatically grant the Series version with the XBox One purchase, when other games from the same publisher do.
And to clarify further, you should be able to buy any game on the entire Xbox store on your Series S and have it guaranteed to work, even if it's an original Xbox game from 20+ years ago. If you are shopping from the web version of the Xbox store, there could be very few cases where an old game won't work on new Series hardware, but anything you see while browsing directly on your Xbox Series hardware should be a filtered list that will work.
