Pandemic was obviously a special situation. However I note and respect Maik's response with the caveat that on the German forum referenced earlier, other builders/publishers do seem to have had better luck sourcing the sound. As it's 40 years since I travelled on a 628 (from Reutte In Tyrol to Kempten) in all honesty it could probably alias to a Volvo coach and I couldn't say if it was correct or not, so will take as is. After reflecting on the situation I think the beauty and unique nature of this route makes it worthy of support and the sound we will just have to live with. i would hope however that efforts will be ongoing to source the correct sound and at some stage update the DMU.

Cross posted with my conciliatory response above. However I would just say for a DMU you can probably get away with this, but think there would be a furore if (say) a Class 37 had been released with sound aliased to the Class 47. This was a massive issue in the early days of MSTS and to some extent still is in Trainz (all the DMU's that sound like an Alco or GM567) and for a programme that is billing itself as a simulation then like it or not, correct or as near to correct as dammit, audio is very important. There could indeed be a case in the unlkely event DTG decided to make one of the old LMS diesel locos which no longer exist or a Cravens DMU similarly none preserved and in that case we would accept the closest possible alias. However where a prototype still exists or there are reference recordings, in return for for the paycheck the very best efforts should be carried out to ensure a good sound experience.

Train audio has always been one of the most critical and contentious elements of train sims going back to MSTS, Railworks, TSC and TSW.

I don't doubt that DTG and its partners have always done their best to get authentic sounds and, when this hasn't been possible, to get a close facsimile.

But what perplexes me is this: When a train operator is willing to grant a license for its locos, it seems to me that they would want that loco to look and sound as authentic as DTG or anyone else can make it.So they should make that loco, if it still exists operationally, available to the licensee.
Why, for instance, does Rivet have to struggle to get authentic sounds for the 385?

A license to model a locomotive should be a license to access it for accuracy in audio and visual terms.

Because it costs the railroad money. Granting a brand license does not.

Yet DB see to be very keen to see their stuff in the game and apart from the 204 with its Rivet physics and the Skyhook attempt at the 187 it all seems very high fidelity. I mean the 612 and G6 are very good in all respects and was presumably done with full access, so why not the 628. Just seems a bit odd to me, the end customer, being asked to pay the same price, well actually £5 more, for some thing not as authentic as previous German content.

DB changed the rules with Covid. They no longer allow those sound surveys. Anyone who wants to do a German train now needs to locate one in private hands.

It's different for all the companies. Some will bend over backwards and support as much as they possibly can - to the other extreme where you can use the license image and branding, but, they wont engage with simple questions or even permissions to come and do a survey without risk of being arrested for looking frankly worrying with a camera pointed at all kinds of infrastructure. Some operators will let us come climb all over their locos while in depot, but are not able to allow us to attach recording equipment out on the mainline to capture running sounds. Everyone's got different guidelines to work within and that's how the real world works.

... and you know what, that's just gotta be fine. Because the only other option available is to not do it really.

We always start discussions with branding + access + information, and see where it goes from there, but if they are unwilling (for whatever reason, it doesn't matter, it's entirely their decision) to make access available, we're not going to throw the whole license out because we can still make good use of it.

If you're thinking "but surely it sounding good and being authentic will be good for their brand?" - nobody thinks like that except people in this community, for the most part. Vast majority of people who drive their trains in the sim are nowhere near being their customers anyway.

I don't think we've had a reference trip to Germany in a long time. Chalk it up to people like Maik being *exceptionally* good at what they do.

As far as pricing - you also have to realise that if we can't get the full authentic sound set, then *more* work has to be done to make up for that and come up with something as close to real as possible, that's not less work, it's quite considerably more. Again, the other option is not to have the train - and for that, we leave the decision to the purchaser on the basis that we suspect most would prefer to have the train as good as possible rather than not at all if it can't be perfect.

My big respect and thanks to the companies that work with us to let us access their brands, and as often as they possibly can their equipment, and to those like Maik, Ed and our setup and audio teams who frankly work magic to bring it all together at the end.

It's not always a perfect result - but it's usually damn good in my opinion, particularly knowing the trials and struggles to get it to that point.

... and that 628 is awesome fun, just saying. Before you write it off, experience it properly and then decide.

    Matt.

With my local line being served by 612s and 628s for a long time I feel intrigued to add that they really don't sound that different in reality. Especially the interior sounds of TSWs 612 are very close to the 628 even without modifications. And given how powerful modern audio tools are this really shouldn't matter that much. Even the 612 stock sound is capable of offering a quite immersive 628 experience audio-wise so at this point where we haven't heard the final audio even once there is no need to be concerned about it. :)

Appreciate the response Matt. I think I will be happy to give the route a go, as I said.

And at least it won't sound like the Aussie Alco from Trainz (I hope!).

And of course doing a search for Niddertalbahn on Steam (not there yet) it is in severe danger of getting lost in all the Trainz versions. I can see some nice headaches for Support when people inadvertently buy TANE/TRS19/Trainz Plus version then wonder why it doesn't work in TSW!!

Yes, Niddertalbahn will be my first German route in a long time. I think Dresden Riesa was the last. It's older, diesel and I'm curious about TSG, plus it looks very good, scenically.

I'm weighing the other German route, wondering how much one will add to the other. I hope they address this in the streams.

I could do both, as I won't be getting either of the UK routes right away, just the SD70ACe for Cajon.

Thanks for the questions so far. I've seen some of the questions will have been answered in March's Roadmap article, so would recommend giving it a read prior to the stream:

    https://live.dovetailgames.com/live/train-sim-world/articles/article/tsw-roadmap-march-2023

And for those concerned that answering a question on this thread means it won't be answered on the stream: if you're asking a question here, there are probably lots of others who would also like the answer, so even if it's answered here, we'll - where possible - also ask it live too.

Will we ever have the BR 218 on this route for freight purposes ?

Maybe to add to the above one, can we expect more loco addons for german content overall? We did not get any since 2021, and no, repaints don't count.

Just checked - no subbing in for either of the locos (the 628 or 365).

That's out of the era and no plans for it. Tsg is creating a 218 dlc much later down that line but most likely won't run freight.

Why would a 218 be out of era? The V 164s entered service in the 1960s.

If you look it up on wikipedia, the 218 entered service on the route in 2002. The route is set on 1992.

However, the English Wiki section on services only begins in the late 90s. Check German wiki:

Before the advent of the TRAXX diesel 245, loco-hauled passenger on unelectrified lines pretty much had to be pulled by a V 100, V 160 or V 200.

can you please show, if the indicators for PZB work correctly (mostly if under 500Hz), so that the BR 628 does not have the same bug as the BR 103 and BR 110?

yes, that is why I ask in the question thread for the Niddertalbahn preview stream, if the BR 628.2 from Niddertalbahn has the same bug ...

I haven't yet got a German route, other than what comes default with TSW 2 (Route was almost instantly uninstalled), but I suspect Niddertalnbahn will be the first to break that trend!
Single track branchlines are my jam!

Well posted. This is a question- for- the -stream thread. We're not looking for responses from other posters at this point, unless they work for DTG or TSG.

Other posters can answer, if they know the answer. (A lot of people are asking stuff, we already got an answer on the roadmap or in a stream, or in a different thread,so no need to ask it again then, and thinking they must answer it in the stream.)
But if I ask a question, and I just get told no idea, it has not released yet, preview is tomorrow, then it does not help.

    As JD has said:
"I've seen some of the questions will have been answered in March's Roadmap article".

A question to Joe about the timetable:
Are the sugar beet trains seasonal like irl? or do they run all year round?

I dont think Joe did it this time, but I can see why you thought it was because it looks like it is going to be very good.

The question is still relevant since Wikipedia says the sugar beet train ran only in November.

Is the DB BR 365 total new or just a different variant of the DB BR 363?
What kind of wagons is it pulling?New ones or exsisting ones already?
And is this the only freight wagon type on this routes?

Some answers can be found in the roadmap article and the most recent article if you go on dovetail live. There's a new freight car. And the 365 is a different variation of the 363. They're like in the same family. It's got a different interior for starters and different physics from what I've read. Also different engine but I don't think tsg had recordings for that. We'll have to wait until the preview to find out.

The 363 in the game actually has the remote control unit in the cab behind the driving position.

No, the 363s are former 365s: they are all R/C capable.

Would the 218 or 245 fit with the time period? Those would be nice additions.

For passenger services, no. 218 ran passenger services in 2002 and the 245 came much later. Apparently the 218 ran freight if you look on German wiki during the time. But I think by the time tsg releases that, players will have played all the services

You have said that before, but it's incorrect, based on the English Wiki article which only describes operations beginning in the late 1990s. In fact V160 types hauled passengers on the route from the 1960s onward- all loco-hauled passenger on nonelectrified local routes used V 100s or V 160s; there were really no other options save the lordly V 200 express locos.

Thanks for that. Did the 628s and the 218s always run together or was there a period where only the 628s ran?

The general pattern was to use loco-hauled trains during peak hours, and DMUs when there was less demand. Originally these were steam engines (often with old two-axle "thunderboxes"!), but by the early 60s V 100 Geeps with Umbaue or occasionally Silberlinge for the rush hours, and VT 98 DMUs for off-peak services. These were gradually replaced by 218s* and 628s. I can't find specific dates, however.

*The main series of V 160 freight locos were redesignated 216 in 1968, but some were equipped with HEP for passenger work and they were tagged 218

No, they said at the end of the stream that they'd run out of time to add the ES50 as a layer on Linke Rheinstrecke (it would probably be out of period on any other German line).

The Es550 freight car, marked ES on Czech railways, can be used on any German-issued railway line. They are still used today. They carry coal and iron scrap. This wagon could be on the RSN and MSB sidings.

I was thinking of equipping these wagons with sidings. These wagons are suitable for local services. In my town, they supply coal to the railway station.
