Just a simple thing. Could we please get OpenStreetMap as one of the map overlay options? I think it would be pretty easy to implement due to very open licensing rules and the fact that is uses prettymuch the same format as Google Map.
That could work as well since OpenRailwayMap is basically OSM with some extra layers. Both of them have their use though.
With the Editor a few months out now, Many people are even facing severe issues with the Google Maps Overlay. Probably the top reason against it is the requirement to have a valid credit card (debit cards have been said to not work). A credit card is often not so easy to get these days and many people here in the forum had issues with exactly this situation. Another reason experienced by me relatively often lately is that the overlay spawns or respawns incorrectly for some map tiles and this although it was correct at this place before. Not sure if this has only something to do with the Google Maps Overlay but just a thing to note at the side. I mean OSM does not have satellite imagery yes, but I think it could be a good alternative to Google Maps when experiencing errors qirh GM or you just need a rough map nonetheless. I can imagine it's load way faster as well. QGIS also uses OpenStreetMaps, so I don't understand why we have to use Google Maps. We still should be able to use the kml file from Google Earth along with OSM as the kml should have its own coordinate information aligned with the Projects one I think.
You know what would be cool and handy? If DTG could implement a way to take the railway layer in OpenRailwayMap and automatically lays tracks with it in the map level in the Editor. I mean the precision is pretty accurate and it could save loads of time for laying track, especially for routes with several tracks or even creating big railyards and stations. Only thing is the tracks might need some node height and gradient adjustments thereafter.
Somehow I doubt these maps have proper data for creating eased curves (size of the transition curves and stuff) however yards don't have that so making them automatically would be pretty handy. Offsetting tracks and connecting them with the crossover tool still seems pretty fast though.
I have heard of people adding some kind of translucent planes, that contain maps, but aside from that, no
