Hi guys, I've tried making a package of my route, but the package manager created a zip with content and asset folders, how do I create a .rwp file that encompasses the route and all associated scenarios when installed by the user please? Many thanks.
I think they're the same thing with different extension names. Would have to test but just changing the extension might do the trick
Yeah, .rwp files can be opened by 7zip. They just provide ease of installation if you're not exactly versed in such things. Why the package manager has created a zip I've no idea. Select the assets you wish to package, click the >>> button, type your name in the 'author' field, below that select unprotected and then click 'create package', Click OK and it should save as a .rwp file.
Not quite what I meant. ie If you can simply rename a ZIP file to RWP and it be the same thing thats one thing You can view a PDF file in a web browser but that doesn't make PDF and html files the same thing
A 7zip file IS NOT the same as a .RWP file (even if you change the extention from .rwp to .7z). Using the supplied "Utilities" program to create a .rwp package from Assets, Content and Manuals folders, also adds information like the creator of the DLC and whether or not files are protected (licensed). When you use the Package installer option with a .rwp file, it creates a file in PackageInfo with the above information along with the folder/paths/file names so that the DLC can be un-installed correctly at a later date. If you have a .rwp file, I strongly suggest using the program to install rather than opening it with 7zip and extracting the sub-folders manually to your Railworks folder.
If you have a lot of time to spare. The installation is fairly quick but the Refresh can take a long time depending how many routes and scenarios you already have Installing by extracting the files then copying puts You in control of your computer Peter
Installing by extracting the files then copying puts You in control of your computer Maybe, but it makes it very hard to remove any DLC loaded this way. Utilities.exe makes it easy. I agree with CT.
How does it make it hard? Utilities overwrites files when it installs a rwp file without asking. If you have an older rwp it might overwrite a newer version of a file. When you remove via Utilities it takes away what it put in - even if another asset requires that file.
Sorry P749 never had the issue using utilities.exe that you report here. How do you remove something that you have extracted the .rwp file and merged it into TS20XX. How do you know with a complex addon what files to overwrite or not to overwrite, you could be looking at 100+ items with different dates to what you have installed. You would also run the risk of removing other assets too. At least with Utilities.exe you can remove an item more easily, than you can manually and you know what has been installed. Do you remember an extracted file you installed in 2014 - Utilities.exe does. To keep refresh getting too long I archive (keep) any old Package Info files say older than 2 years and that seems to keep the refresh rate a little shorter. If I want to look at old DLC - I just copy them back into the main folder. This may not work for everyone.
Likely as a newcomer I have way less than you guys, and likely computer specs play a part too, but I find refresh never takes more than a second or two. Whether rightly or wrongly, I find Utilities a quicker/handier way of installing.
So I have downloaded a Sound Update for the BR Class 08 Shunter. It is in a RWP format - I opened it with 7Zip and examined the contents which are mainly Replacement Sound Files. Installing it either via Utilities or Drag and Drop will overwrite the default files. If I install it via Utilities and decided to remove it where do the replacement files for those previously overwritten come from? Peter
Presumably if he wanted to save copies, he can do that easiily enough before, or just do a backup copy of the relevant folder. Presumably you wouldnt otherwise case about the previous sound files, if you have taken the trouble to replace them with improvements.
Have a look at this https://rail-sim.de/forum/filebase/entry/5160-replacement-sound-rsc-class-08-und-ns600/ It comes as a RWP file which Utilities installs The installation overwrites Default Files If I then decide "I don't like it" and uninstall it via Utilities how do I replace the fires that were overwritten? Utilities won't do it
P749 I give in - we have to agree to disagree - I'll continue to use Utlities.exe as I haven't seen any problems using it, since 2012. In Utilites.exe the .pi file tells you what files have been installed, so if there is an overwriting issue - you at least know what files have been installed via the rwp process. Do you have that record if you install the extracted files using Windows merge function?
Because I do drag and drop I know what is going to be overwritten before it happens and then I can make a backup of the files that will be affected I'm not a computer wiz like you and I have no idea what a .pi file is or where I might find it. And I'm not saying Utilities is wrong I just like to know what it is installing.
P749 \STEAM\steamapps\common\RailWorks\PackageInfo - read with notepad or notepad++ BTW I am not a computer wiz - I know absolutely nothing about them.
