The line between Manchester Central and Derby is 61 miles. Both lines had a wide variety of services during the peak of the line's usage, and it was used heavily during the WCML electrification to Manchester. After electrification was completed, the line's days were numbered, with closure eventually coming in 1967. Sections of the line remain, with the section between New Mills Junction and Peak Forest remaining open for freight traffic as well as being part of the Hope Valley Line. Rowsley to Matlock forms the Peak Rail heritage line, and Matlock to Derby is part of the national network, currently served by EMR Class 156's.
