Excellent idea and for the cabs they might be tap changer or operated like a diesel electric locomotive. In this time they are referred as Oil Electric locomotives

Can't forget the PRR E44. PRR had 66 of them built from 1960-1963. They were 4400HP units (with Ignitron tube rectifiers), but the 22 rebuilt versions (E44a) had 5000 HP with newer Silicon diode rectifiers.
