    Hi all..

after much thought I took the plunge and bought TSW6 for PS4 and have already bought a couple of add ons.. namely the Bakerloo line and the Pz-St Austell and St Ives routes.

I thought all the local stations would be included, Hayle, Redruth and Camborne but they’re omitted. Is there any way of adding them in so the train stops at all stations to SA?

My first impressions are that this is an awesome game and takes way more thinking about than I expected… having come from a FS background where there is so much to do and think about when flying as realistically as possible.

As I know nothing about trains, how does a real driver know where the next signal is, what aspect it is, where the next speed change is, how far to the next station, where to stop at a station given he might have anything from 2 to 10 cars…

my aim will be to get to a point where the trains are driven in as lifelike a way as possible?

Got to start somewhere with my questions.

Yes the stations are there but not as part of the ‘timetable’.

If you drive the timetable services with the class 150, the train should stop at all stations.

As a beginner, I would advise you to visit the training centre first, it has great tutorials for learning basic train operations.

Hi.. thanks.. I’m getting stuck in to the training as well as having a go driving a couple of routes… I’ve barely scratched the surface yet.. lol..

A useless piece of info… I’m on the train coming back from Liverpool to Redruth and just stopped at Crewe.. last time I was there I was about 14 and trainspotting on a day trip from Basingstoke…memories.. lol

TBH my part time job takes me all over the country and I’ve never spent so much time on trains.. I guess that’s what’s prompted me to have a go..

    They are though?
You probably picked a service that doesn't call at them

A lot of this will be route learning so the more you play a route the more you learn where the speed changes are and how far apart signals are. This is what real life drivers have to do before they can sign a route. Personally I play with safety systems on and the HUD only has speed changes so I look for signals. A single yellow light means the next signal is red and you want to be doing something like 10-20mph by the AWS magnet so you can comfortably stop in time. I think you basically drive to the last signal you saw depending on the route etc.

Most stations in the modern routes should also have stop car markers on the platform that are little blue signs with 4-8 etc and you'd stop at the marker which corresponds to your train length. But not all UK stations seem to have these and sometimes they get missed off.

When I first got into this game I played on the traning centre a lot. After that, I mainly drove one handle EMU's at first, as they are easier to operate (played a lot with the 465 and 375 on Southeastern High Speed). Got into the more intricate and classic loco's only much later.

On the routes you have, Bakerloo is a great start (do the 1972 stock training module first!) as the train is easy to drive. On West Cornwall, I would mainly stick to the class 150 first: it has separate brake and throttle handles, but is still relatively easy to operate.

I've noticed something... I do the same (only the speed changes) but still, we can see where the signals are, ie it shows how far apart they are between each other, and that's a great help (cheat ?) when chasing yellows... :(

I meant to say I've turned it off on my HUD, so in your settings you can change what shows up. So I've turned off next signal aspect and only have speed limit. You can adjust most things on there :) Means I have to physically look for signals and don't know the one ahead

Is it at all likely that you’ll ever get a red signal and have no time to react to it?And what’ll happen if you zoom through a red?

I’ve been keeping a close eye on speed limits and try to stay as close to them as possible but suddenly had a speed change and found myself speeding and having to brake quite hard to get the speed back… is this a glitch or more likely I’ve missed the new speed in the hud?

But you do have the signals positions on the HUD, beneath the line representing the route ahead, they are shown as gray dots, aren't they ?
So you can see how they are spaced and brake accordingly ?
    It's that that annoys me...

There's where anticipation comes into play, normally you shouldn't do a SPAD.
What matters is where your train is, you can indeed use the zoom to see the signal aspect from afar.

    The latter ;)

But alas the game is not devoid of bugs...

So greens you run full line speed, double yellows you'd probably slow down a little, single yellow you'd slow right down so you have time to react to a red. So if I see a single yellow Im on the brakes to give myself time to stop for a red. If you go through a red you SPAD (signal passed at danger) and you fail the timetable/scenario. Again this is where learning a route helps because you know more about where the signals are and how they're spaced :)4
I don't think I do or at least if they're there I haven't noticed them? I was pretty sure you could just turn everything off if you wanted too. :)

For the accuracy of scenery, this is the worst DLC in this wonderful game. Unfortunately Rivet will never correct it.

I have a lot if respect for people who don't use the next aspect and speed limit indicators.

I could not do it personally!!

Next aspect, it's easily doable without (at least if you have AWS on).
But as for the speed changes, you really need good route knowledge.

coursetim I'll do a screenshot tonight to show you what I have in mind.
It may well be that I've not found the HUD config that suit the best...

    HUD.jpg

coursetim is this what you got ?
You see, no signal aspect, but with this you know whether you have to jump on the brakes like mad or if there's some margin...
I feel like it's cheating somehow, it's way easier when chasing yellows. :|

gwrpat#3475 sometimes there are two numbers at the exact same point, one above the line and one beneath (often for junctions).
In this case, follow the lower value. ;)

I only turn off the next signal aspect, have to keep speed limits on as they require some route knowledge/learning and I can’t be asked with that. If I’m going to do that I might as well apply for a train driving role and earn 70k per year.

Plymouth to Penzance needs to be made at some point in the future to redeem the section of the WCL that Rivet butchered.
I don’t buy the whole “only Rivet can do it” argument when DTG are perfectly entitled to make the route. Rivet don’t hold any copyrights to route’s.

Even Rivet could make it better based on what they've done with other routes. Throw in an IC swallow HST, maybe a Regional Railways 158, layer in the Mk2s from the 86 pack behind a 47, give the route a polish and you've got a decent addon.

Hi guys.. thx for all your replies… most useful. I’m really getting quite into this. I did find a route with all the stops to St A from Pz.. so I did it :) Also did the branch line to St Ives. I went for that route because I live here.. lol.. I don’t know how good it is but all the stations are in the right place at least.. lol.
I’ve tried a couple of other trains with varying levels of success or failure.. I also got the Paddington to Reading route and had two runs on that. A fast run and an all stops run.

getting the barking distances right is a learning curve. There’s plenty to do in the game at least although I’ve not yet taken to running around stations sticking up posters :)

what are the best routes to own?

I used to watch steam trains as a small kid.. when we had steam even though it was just about finished then.. did loads of train spotting until I was about 15 .. my cousin was learning to be a driver at March.. but after I retired I found a pt job delivering vehicles all over the country which means getting hoe is usually 7-8 hours sat on a train… and the more I did it he more interested I got in the whole rail system.. and here we are.

The Riviera line is great if you don’t have it.

The other best UK routes are probably Southeastern Highspeed, WCML over Shap. But there are a few good ones - depends what you’re after really - and trains from routes often layer into others, so the more you have, the better the experience. For example Riviera line will be enhanced by the fact you have Paddington-Reading.

I randomly picked another route and there they were! So thx for that! Is there any way of seeing what stations are on a route before spending time loading up a route only to find they’re not included.. perhaps there’s an option I’m missing.

If you feel up to handling the AC electric tap changer then Preston to Carlisle is still the undisputed champion of the TSW UK routes.

If you want something simpler, Birmingham to Crewe got a bad rap when first released but it has rallied a bit since. However to get the best out of it you really need to buy the Class 390 Pendolino and Class 220 Voyager for the Inter City layers.
