    Morning all

I suggested in the brakes stream last night about TrainSim-Matt being given the opportunity to drive a real train by DTG after spending hours listening to the incredible knowledge he has.

I therefore thought we should have a poll for this. How good would it be to see Matt whisked to a heritage railway and given the opportunity to see first hand how the sim stacks up against the real world with him either rocking a head mount go pro and someone else along to film the day.

If we can encourage DTG to we are giving our appreciation back to Matt and team for their efforts on streams etc. It gives DTG an opportunity to make something of it to drum up publicity for sim also and helps us support a heritage railway by giving it additional publicity. For example driving the West heritage line.I think it must be possible as I’ve been watching a Travel programme this morning with Charley Boorman driving a steam train

    So my questions are.....

1- should Matt be created an opportunity to drive a real train
2-How could this help game and DTG (Roi)
3-Where would you like to see Matt drive?
    4-What should he drive?
5-Do you know someone who could help facilitate this?

Not going to happen at present due to Covid.
Not going to happen on any national railway as there are all sorts of rules and competencies that need to be complied with to even set foot in a cab.
Might be an outside chance if/when preserved railways start running and offer driver experience courses, at a price of course.

I believe tv is still continuing through COVID based on lateral flow tests etc. I’ve seen more than one person wearing a mask.
Not a chance on national railways I agree, hence the mention of heritage railways.

This would be fun to watch. Whether it can be arranged is another matter.

If it was being done "for work purposes" lockdown doesn't count, no passengers, but Matt could drive a train in work time for the purpose of the video
Would need risk assessing etc but the law would allow

Matt doesn’t need to do this for work so it is still stretching the law a bit and moreover, is it morally right for him to be going on a work jolly in the middle of a pandemic? No, it certainly isn’t.

Kind of going off topic here....

the poll question is the question, not the immediate morality of it. It might be something that if agreed didn’t occur until the plagues gone.

Talking legally rather than morally. And if it is Matt and a driver, no different to two people getting in a lift together
Our guys at work do similar things all the time as they normally work apart but can, with suitable testing, risk assessment etc, work closely for short periods.

Yes, you are quite right. Once we are back to something like normality, these are the kind of endeavours that would make interesting things to watch.

If it wasnt for the pandemic, I'd say let the DTG crew travel to a few of the Heritage Railroads here in the US that have program's that allow you to drive their locomotives.

I would say once we're over the this pandemic yes let's see Matt drive a real loco even if it just a short distance there and back.
After all would could possibly go wrong.

I think Sam's rip it and grip approach is not going to sit well with the railways.

Maybe they need to send Matt out to drive one of the upcoming steam trains they’re developing (if it exists still and can be done).

what a work related feature that could be, driving the train they reveal
