Considering getting a 4k monitor for Christmas. Currently I play on a small HDTV.

Wondering if anyone has changed and could give some feedback please?

Not sure how big of a change it'd be, and its a lot of money if its only for a little benefit.

    Thank you!

4K is good, but there is an advantage to staying with 1080p which is that you can use the 4K mode on TSW anyway. The PS5 downsamples from 4K to 1080p which adds an extra layer of anti-aliasing. You can tell the difference immediately by swapping between the two graphics modes.

Thanks for this :) - I currently have 4k mode on, despite being on 1080p. I don't know much about this kind of thing, but does it basically mean that 1080p overall is probably better to stick with?

It's up to you really. With TSW you should use 4K mode generally, but you will notice the extra detail on an actual 4K monitor. I don't know if the aliasing will be any worse because there is no supersampling, but I would expect it to not be a major drawback.

The jump from 1080p to 4k will be significant, so you’ll notice a huge quality improvement.

Personally I’ve always used a 27” 1440p on the PS5, until I got a 32” 4k OLED monitor earlier in the year. It was a decent improvement in overall clarity, though nowhere near as much as 1080 > 2160 will be.

Thanks both. Would it be at all possible to ask either of you to upload a photo from a phone camera of what it looks like on the screen please? Just to get an idea - currently, I can kind of see pixels when playing and the OHLE is often a bit pixelated.

This is 10am on a SEHS service at Ashford (screenshot is from ingame directly rather than a photo).

I did notice you mentioned ‘monitor’ so I would say that there is little point in going under 32” for 4k. Some even say 40” is the minimum size for 4k.

At 27” the sweet spot is 1440p. Personally I only went higher as I was using a 1440p ultrawide on my PC/simrig, but wanted to use the PS5 on the same setup, so decided to go for a bigger 16:9 screen, otherwise I’d still be happily playing at 1440.

The LG c4 range is great for gamers. 144 hz refresh rate and 0.1 Ms response time!

Yeah it’s actually interesting, I specifically chose SEHS because IMO it has one of the better OLE setups - also it pixelated as you can see, but when I looked behind it rendered further without any pixelation. Once I load the game up again I’m going try a different, more recent route & see if it does the same.

Never played on a 4K monitor, but I do play on a Sony Bravia 4KTV and the picture is amazing.
I want to upgrade to an OLED eventually.

I play 1080p on my laptop and on a 4k tv for Series X, and the image is significantly better. I also get marginally better performance on Series X, but my laptop is a bit under-spec. My TV also supports VRR on Series X, which can make a big difference for certain games. I think PS5 supports that feature as well.

Yea looks great plays like a dog. Performance is poor on most routes. 20 to 30fps at Euston Station Lot of stuttering here and there and still DTG have done nothing to inprove the performance. Oh well there's always Thomas the tank. What a joke.

Having Thomas the tank dlc in the game won’t cure the WCML’s performance issues.

Does anyone on a 4k monitor find that in clear weather daytime 801 on ECML at Doncaster waiting to depart southbound, that the OHLE is like flickering on the monitor? It does this on HD, and idk whether it is like hunting between pixels or what. Thanks!

It'll be down to the anti-aliasing used in the game. Because it's a thin object it'll either be invisible, jaggy or flickering depending on what setting is used. Even in TS, which has far more comprehensive AA options, OHLE still looks dodgy.
