Got my PS5 (Standard) version of TSW3 downloaded and installed, but when I go into the menu only Training Centre and Cajon Pass are shown. How do I get Kent High Speed and SKA to show up in the list, please?
It was the "bundle" but turning the PS5 off completely and restarting made them appear, so all good. Must admit it does look impressive on the 65" screen compared to the PC version on a 24" monitor. Now need to decide which additional DLC I'm going to buy as I know there is some sort of limit on the PS5. Probably the BR Classic stuff to start with.
Well I'd say Tees Valley and the chopper and 31. Oh and Northern Trans Pennine and the big freight pack. Possibly WSR the 33 and 52 for some good ol thrush. Annnnnd finally the Liverpool Crewe route. You might have enough room left for something else. I also believe that's why I cant get used to playing tsc on a 21 inch curved monitor Hentis
Thanks Hentis, NTP certainly on the shopping list and as you say basically anything classic diesel. Mind regardless of the Sony 64Gb limit, I can see us having to get an additional HD to plug in the back. Missus already has a list of games she wants, including Gods Of War! But I have to admit even the Training Centre looked good and our TV has pretty decent speakers too. Going on the PC later and playing Run 8 seemed like a Gameboy in comparison. I’m assuming there are regular sales and discounts on the PS5 collection, similar to Steam?
There's a sale on right now! (semi-frequent, not as often as Steam, more often than Xbox) Current sale ends midnight tonight tomorrow some indeterminate time based on the times below??? Thanks Fred. I will keep an eye out for NTP etc. Of course even as a seasoned PC player there is a bit of a learning curve. For example sounding the horn I have found one tone with pushing down on the left stick but not the other tone. I also need to find how to access the various views when it comes time for shunting etc. Edit: Well I see operating two tone horns is a bit fiddly, as you have to "mash" the left stick and square button at the same time? Also only one external view (press down on right stick) rather than 2, 3, 8 etc on the PC? Anyhow missus has currently requistioned the thing to play some Harry Potter game..! Hopefully I can get back on later.
Controller has multiple "shift" buttons when using immersive controls (default). For horn specifically, the "shift" button is square; hold it down and push left stick to get the alternative horn (low/high differs between locos). Also used for cruise control/AFB, hold square and press throttle/brake (L2/R2). Square on its own (normal press) switches between brake types For camera views, right stick acts as the shift. Hold down the right stick and press the directional pad left to cycle interior cams, or press directional pad right to cycle external cams
BTS they're working on that. Optimising isn't something that is easy... But be sure they're working on it!
Seriously Get a USB Keyboard and plug it in.... you will never take it out again.... unless you want to use the PC. It pretty much uses the key binds of TSC. You can two tone till your lil hearts content. I have a 2 tb MM2 SSD in the PS5 (I also have a 4tb external HD for all my PS4 games as well as the 835gb standard SSD. I also have a 1tb external cartridge for the Series X. And I know I am going to upset just a few of the Ps5 guys here BUT some if not most of the routes for TSW 3 run better on the Series X than the PS5. Yes, I am a PS5 guy as well.... Hentis
Well SE High Speed purring along nicely, I would have to say running smoother than on my potato PC. One other thing I noticed is that the sound seems sharper and clearer. Could be down to the fact PS5 sound output combined with the TV speakers is better than the built in mobo soundcard and desktop speakers on the PC. And it might be wishful thinking but I could swear I heard a bit of reverb and rattle passing under bridges. So really surprised to find myself saying this, as a "prize the PC out of my cold, dead hands" type of guy, the PS5 experience might actually be superior.
*most* people dont have a PC that is as good as a PS5 or an Xbox Series X tbh, they are both very powerful machines. XSX for me all the time, but PS5 runs well too (heck i'm still in awe of how well the game runs on an Xbox Series S, that thing costs £249 and is not that much different to my PC really, albeit my PC is a potato these days, I can't justify the money on it if I'm honest so it's unlikely to get an upgrade)
The ps5 version is flawed. The series X has better resolution, better overall framerate and similar load times. And you can actually have all dlc installed
Yea but I think the OP mentioned wanting to play GoW, which I don’t think is on Xbox. Exclusive titles often factor into console purchase decisions.
I'm still looking to replace the PC, Matt, as it dates from 2013, so although it has had a few updates the motherboard is the original ASUS Z87 and the CPU an I7 4770. However last time I ran the options at PC Specialist to get something even approaching a current spec medium gaming PC, I was looking in excess of £1200. That might come down now scalping on GPU's has hopefully moved on, but not by much. The drawback with the PS5 of course as I intimated above is that is competes for screen time on the TV, either while Mrs. M is using it or watching one of her programmes.
As a freshly baked PS5 player I would also like to join this thread. I've had the console for a few days now and I'm still completely amazed by the barely perceptible noise and the SSD loading speed. Unfortunately, I'm also getting to know the 64GB limit at the moment, but hopefully by Easter it will be a thing of the past. Great how compassionate Matt posts current status updates in the forum. We appreciate it! Of course, the Series X players also defend their consoles, but the PS5 can easily meet them at eye level or vice versa. TSW3 runs totally smoothly in 4K, small reloading stutters in huge environments also happen on high-end PCs and hardly disturb. Due to the smooth frame rate, the immersion is a good deal bigger, everything looks much sharper and distant scenery is finally visible. BTW: I've also installed a basic version of TSW3 on the PC and Laptop, but it's still played most relaxed sitting on the couch, with a controller in your hand, on the flat screen at home.
Oh crikey currently for both Xbox and PS5 while I'm streaming I use the Turtle Beach Recon70 headset But I also use the old PS4 wireless Headset (great sound, rubbish mic). I'm not paying £84 for the official Sony rubbish. I also use these for when I am playing and not streaming. Thank you very much Hentis, it seems that they are not available right now but I will keep an eye out for them when they are in stock!
I mainly play TSW on my Gigabyte Aero 3070 laptop at 1080p Ultra, get a nice uninterrupted 60fps most of the time. Any slowdowns are in the usual busy places like Boston or Victoria. However, sometimes I just don't want to sit at the desk and instead put my feet up, the PS5 gives me that more relaxed experience. I own all DLC on PC (including today's US releases) and everything up to and including Birmingham Cross City on PlayStation. I've only got the base TSW3, Spirit of Steam, loco expansion and Cross City installed on PS5 until the DLC manager is released. While I'm talking about this, one feature I'd love to see is a Dovetail Live cross-save function so that multi-platform players can use the same driver profile across all of their owned platforms.
Totally agree.... for TSW2, however the Xbox audio quality was unfortunately well and truly *nerfed* with the introduction of TSW3. Our friend Matt is fully aware but a fix has not yet been forthcoming! If they can sort it, I may just pick up an Xbox again at some point.
I used the Sony PS5 headset but that thing fell apart on me after a year. It still works but the ear material is gone. Sound quality was ok but it wasn’t particularly comfortable, especially when I’d wear my glasses. Would not recommend this one. I do have a friend that swears by astrogaming headsets (allegedly comfortable, durable, good sound) so I’m possibly going to try one of those out.
The best PS headset I have used is the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 gen 2, which is a mouthful but it has excellent sound quality and is ultra comfortable (for me).
Of course with dual console and PC ownership comes the dilemma of new releases - which platform to buy them on, or both? I suspect routes like Niddertalbahn and Rhine Valley, even Peak Forest are going to really stand out on the large screen but I also want the convenience of playing on the PC. Oh well, it’s only money! On the subject of console train simming it’s actually nothing new. I remember going to great lengths to get hold of the Japanese Densha de Go games for the earlier PS’s then having to “tweak” the console to overcome the regional coding (I hasten to add everything was legitimately bought and paid for it was just Sony’s annoying regional protection). Some great times particularly Densha Professional 2 with classics like the Yamanote Line, Osaka Loop Line and it introduced me to big screen train gaming when the best the PC could offer at that point was Simudrive or Train Driver 3 running on an Amiga emulater!
https://www.play-asia.com/go-by-train-hashiro-yamanote-line/13/70dq7r Expensive, but no region locks for PS4/PS5 games (DLC is another matter) In addition this may also tickle your pickle: https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP6857-CUSA28510_00-7474878518110939 I don't have it, and reviews are middling mainly due to the use of real video for the route
Just brought a series x coming from a ps5 the difference in performance is night and day really smooth and looks sharper.
PZB Release is hold square + right on dpad. I only discovered this/bothered to find out yesterday. The joystick can be very awkward at times, especially when doing this stuff. Also, toggling through camera views, a static passing only gets the rear of the train. To get this to show from the front it's necessary to put this view as default. Unfortunately, you'll need to toggle thrice to get the running alongside, passing through the rear view, which can cause long US freight to crash the game.
I've played both ps5 and series X versions and sounds are similar to me. If anything, the xbox version sounds louder
I think overall the game is great on console. For a sim game, operating complex equipment, I am surprised they managed to make it work so well with a controller. I have a mouse and keyboard for console but I've never even tried it in TSW just because I find the controller great. This is contrast with the original TSW 2020, which I shelved quickly, one of the big reasons being I didn't like the way it felt control wise. As for performance on console, I am one of the few crazy people that owns it on both top end consoles and plays on both. I started off with PS5 (TSW2020, 2, 3 and almost all DLC). Recently I got a XSX and started playing it there too (not as much DLC but slowly buying back some favs). Overall it looks just as good, to my eye, on both of them, with a few differences I will note below. Performance is better on XSX. PS5: Pro: - Looks great, runs ok in most situations. - Rarely any crashes, better than TSW2 in that regard. - DLC goes on sale often. Con: - DLC limit. - FPS drops and stuttering in some areas. Busy areas like London Victoria or stations with lots of passengers have noticeably lower FPS. - Looooong loading time when you first open the game for some reason, since release. XSX: Pro: - Runs better than PS5, butter smooth in most situations. No noticeable FPS drop on busy passenger stations. Some FPS drop in places like London Victoria but much better than PS5 there. - Barely any crashes. - No DLC limit. - Doesn't have the loading time issue of PS5. Con: - Has some weird graphical issues that don't show up on PS5. Flickering buttons and labels in cabs of some train. And an issue where textures get blurry when you zoom out and then don't sharpen up fast when you zoom back in. I see it with shadows and most often unit numbers (see thread: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/th...d-blurry-texture-issue-on-unit-numbers.64833/). - DLC seems to go on sale less. - SOME sounds (mainly AWS alarm in my experience) don't sound as good, sound slightly compressed.
I’ve also played on both, the performance comparison is null since both Xbox & PS5 have varied results in different areas. It also looks no different apart from the Xbox having trouble rendering the cabs. The difference comes with either crappy sound or a DLC limit, so it’s pick your poison really.
You can clearly tell on a 50" 4k display that the series X runs at a better resolution. I found the sound is louder and crisper on xbox series X. I don't know too much about the locos etc in reality to know if they sound as they should. I play primarily on the ps5, just in case you think I'm being biased.

Thanks Fred and Bill. I will check but pretty sure we already had the PS5 set on native 4K as it’s also going to serve as a backup movie player. TVL was on my shopping list so great heads up on that. Hopefully the 31’s and 20’s will follow along with NTP. Another quick question folks, well two actually. 1. Is it possible to engage force feedback for TSW on the joypad and 2. I noticed with a game my wife was playing sound seemed to also be coming from the controller, but I’m guessing that’s not a feature of TSW?
Sadly no rumble on consoles for TSW - not on PS anyway, I assume Xbox is the same Controller speaker noise is a dev choice, none implemented on any flavour of TSW. Not sure what I'd like in there really, vast majority of TSW noises you'd hear around you rather than a tinny speaker. Good examples of use are games that have an in-game cb radio or similar; maybe AWS bell would work, or the announcements on German locos?
So I heard back from the team about resolution and they confirmed that the Series X and PS5 are absolutely on a par for resolution and screen percentage settings from our side. If there's a difference being seen, i'm not sure what that is - they're using the same config in the game. Matt.
Our main TV has pretty good built in surround effects including pseudo Atmos, though again not sure if that supported by TSW. I agree the controller speaker is a bit of a gimmick, though.
There is no difference - Solicitr likely covered the issue someone else had, where they are spoofing an upscale. It could also be that someone is not using the HDMI cable that came with the PS5, I noticed when I tried to just use one HDMI (the one that came with my series X) and switch it between the Xbox & the PS5, that the PS5 wouldn’t always play ball. It’s also possible that people are using screens which can ‘spoof’ 4k. LG is notorious for being able to accept a 4k signal but will only output at whatever the max resolution is for the screen - back before PS5 had 1440p output & you only had options for 1080p or 4k, you could actually achieve 1440p by using such a screen.
The new consoles, if you're connecting to a modern 4K TV with features like 120hz and VRR, there are lots of settings in between the TV and the console that you can inadvertently have wrong which will negatively affect you. Its not like the older days with consoles where it is 100% plug it and go. One thing you want to make sure (IMO) is that you have the TV in "game mode". And as mentioned they are picky about HDMI cables. To get all the correct features you need to use a HDMI 2.1 cable. The easiest thing to make sure you do that is just use the one that came with it in the box, don't plug it into whatever random HDMI cable you have around.
Are we sure the difference in picture is not HDR related? Both consoles handle HDR in different ways. Xbox use auto HDR which tries to add full HDR on games where it was not designed to. PS5 however is just SDR in an HDR container, so nothing special Personally I prefer games designed in SDR to run as such, as HDR will certainly not be colour or contrast acurate to the developers original design. If this is the case you may want to look at the PS5 HDR setting and set it to 'on when supported) Not sure what you are referring to but if it's the PS5 game preset setting to performance, it doesn't work the way you state. It just tells games which has both performance and resolution modes which should be default when booting the game for the 1st time. The resolution is whatever native resolution the game runs in which then upscales to 4k. It only occasionally drops to 1080p when dynamic resolutions are used and certain sections get too busy for either of the consoles to handle adequately
