    hey there!

I'm thinking of purchasing Train simulator 2022 but I'm not willing to pay the full price for the game on steam and Idk if it's ever or will ever go on sale. I've found a key for last year's version of train simulator router login (2021) but I'm unsure if it will update to the newest version or it won't give me the newer version. has anybody tried this before and has it worked for you?

    thanks!

You’ve posted this in the Train Sim World Suggestion Forum. That’s the wrong place, try the TS2022 forum instead.

    However

If you get a key for TS2021, the core game will update to TS2022. You just won’t get the 2022 routes.

TS2022 is on Sale regularly. In fact I’m pretty sure it’s on sale at the moment.

TS is on sale loads on steam, and you can pick up TS keys from third party sites fairly cheaply too.
As Tigert1966 says, the game engine will update from whatever version of TS you buy (even TS2017) up to TS2022, but you will only get the routes bundled with whatever year you get the key for.
To get other DLC you would have to pay for the licenses for those DLCs in the normal way, ie through steam, but again they're on sale a lot and you can get a lot of third party DLCs (routes and locos) for free on various sites as well as payware sites such as AP, ATS etc

If you're into British railways you might think about the Great British Railway Journeys bundle which can also be a starting point for TS. It has five routes (of varying ages and quality to be sure but all at least good) for £12.50 at the moment.
