Edit - I genuinely am confused you can probably ignore my entire post. To explain my confusion, I somehow managed to play the game for 5 days and not once see any difference in the graphics. Then after changing the setting as I mention below, I not once but twice in a row got the apparently very specific weather conditions that actually uses volumetric lighting… I say volumetric lighting because that’s what every other game calls it, I didn’t even notice in this game it’s labelled volumetric fog. Even when I’ve had runs in thick fog, it doesn’t look any different to how the game looked in TSW3… apparently the conditions you need are for it to be ever so, ever so, slightly misty…but also sunny… and suddenly the game looks incredible, genuinely near photo realistic. This just leaves me, as I said, genuinely confused… why add volumetric lighting to the game, but then not use it… so much for all the talk from Matt on the build up streams talking about how it makes a noticeable difference to even sunny days, if they are not even switching it on for anything but mist. Original post below ~ This might not be unique to Xbox… It might only be an issue for people importing a profile from TSW3 etc… I’ve been playing since the start of early access under the assumption that Volumetric Lighting was enabled and working, because when I checked through all my settings it clearly said “enabled” However, after playing for the past few days, completely distracted by all the fun and excitement of new routes and new locos syndrome, it began to niggle at me that I didn’t feel like I was actually seeing any of the benefits that Volumetric Lighting is supposed to bring to the game. This got me thinking… I noticed that when I looked through the settings upon that first boot, the game had remembered a lot of my settings from TSW3… I wondered therefor if the profile transfer had simply copied over my settings save file from TSW3 and therefor likely doesn’t have a setting for VL in it. So I went to the setting… disabled the VL and hit the apply button… then changed it back to enabled and hit apply again. Loaded up a timetable for the Scotsman… and the difference in the games whole appearance was actually massive, it was instantly apparent that I had been playing the game for the last 5 days without VL. Now my reasoning may be off… maybe this is nothing to do with profile import, maybe it’s a SeriesX issue, maybe it’s something bizarre and unique that happened just to me… or maybe it’s affecting everyone and nobody noticed… but… It’s got me thinking more… some of us have noticed we are missing certain options from our settings.. notable under the Player Assist heading… I only have two options here, but other people seem to have more… maybe this too is linked to a profile import issue, and those of us that got automatically put into expert mode, do not have the options written into our settings save file, and therefor have no way to change the settings that Beginners have. Anyway, just some musings, and I hope this helps anyone else looking to troubleshoot this.
Where is the setting for Volumetric Lighting in the settings menu? The only volumetric I'm seeing is volumetric fog. (I'm on PC, perhaps we somehow don't have the option?)
I’m on Xbox X and the only option I see is volumetric fog under general settings. I don’t see any for volumetric lighting
The only small visual benefit you get is if you manually set the fog to maximum. But don't expect mind-blowing effects.
I think the OP is confused with the Volumetric Fog setting. There is no Volumetric Light settings on Xbox Series X, at least not on mine. Some mod should edit the topic line, as this has the potential to confuse even more people.
