I have used lots of old photos to try to make my route (Cambs/ECML) look as realistic as possible - so it is always nice when I encounter a new-to-me photo showing a location on my route and it matches well to what I've created. In this case I found a picture showing Mildenhall station in the 1960s and thought I'd see how well my (still) WIP section of the route stands up. Here is the original followed by my attempted recreation: Two obvious points stand out (lack of bespoke station building and not the right railbus) but apart from that I'm quite pleased. A third point (the extra fencing on the right side) is a factor of the creeping reduction in facilities - possibly after decommissioning of the turntable (not sure about this though). I'd be interested to see if anyone else does this sort of direct comparison?
Sometimes, yes. It's of course valuable for route builders, beyond that there is the occasional screenshot contest with the recreation theme. I don't specifically go for it, but I am occasionally inspired by consists.
I did this one of Cavendish station a couple of years ago. At the time, I didn't have the right vehicle models but what I was comparing, was the station building. I need to rejig most of the models as my blender skills improve.
Im currently working on a couple of routes and use old photos to work from as the routes are no longer there, my main problem is texturing assets that resemble the original, i can create them ok in blender but i find it tricky to get them looking good enough.
Look up Tony Nicholls on YouTube, he has several videos on baking textures. Baking is what makes the flat images look more 3d.
