I just tried standard scenario number 3 where the last task is to bring a locomotive into the jacks inside a building. Unfortunately, there is no way to drive into the building as the tracks are blocked! I know this is an old route, but am surprised I haven't seen mention of this or any problems. I am new to the shunting activities and find the whole thing quite interesting and enjoyable until I ran into this. Are standard scenarios even worth doing? What differs between standard and career besides scoring points? Aerial View On Approach From Inside From Outside
You have to use the Traverser. Approach the shed but stop before you go off the edge. Press "G" or "Shift + G" and the Traverser will move along one lane at a time either left or right. Each press of the key will move it along one lane at a time. Keep pressing the key until it lines up with the lane you are on. Eventually the Traverser will line up with the gap so you can continue across. Hope that makes sense.
That got me too! I looked in vain on the track overview to operate the traverser, then noticed that if you move your mouse over it, the points icon appears and you can click it to move the traverser along to where you are, or you can use the keyboard as Craigie said.
Nothing apart from you don't score points and it means you are not having to drive like a maniac constantly chasing the clock. Personally I find Standard scenarios much better for shunting and freight movement. You can take your time plan your route without getting penalized for being too slow.
Remember as well that all the scenarios from AP, JT, etc, will be standard scenarios. Career scenarios come with the DTG routes. Remember you can also switch off scoring in settings for career scenarios, and you can drive them without even getting warned of speeding!
I also prefer Standard and convert all career to standard as soon as I get a new route. I got totally fed up being penalised for exceeding unmarked sudden speed limits and having to meet unrealistic timings. The game is for enjoyment not punishment.
All you have to do is untick the scoring option in settings to escape all that: no need to convert anything at all! And indeed, a non-scoring career scenario is actually less aggravating than a standard one, as it doesn’t flash up speeding if you hit 1mph over the limit!
Great idea guys. Thanks for the input and tips. Shunting requires quite a bit more work than just driving, so chasing the clock during shunting duties seems like a bad idea. This simulator grows on me over time. At first, I much preferred passenger runs with many stops. Then I started to like freight runs simply because I always loved freight locomotives. Over the past couple of weeks, I have grown to love shunting/switching. There is a lot of variety which means I can never get bored. Now only to solve that blocked track problem with Doncaster. Time to look for similar Workshop scenarios.
Remember there’s shunting scenarios with the Class 08 from the BR Blue Pack in the old Chatham line (Night Shunter), Weardale, plus the Class 09 at Woodhead Electric in Blue. Also plenty of workshop scenarios using Shunter too. https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/largest-uk-yard.50484/
He didn't realise the expanse in front of the rails was for the traverser - nothing was actually blocked.
The blocked tracks are in the images I posted at the start of this thread. It shows them from different views.
Traverser? What is that? I thought I was supposed to drop the locomotive off in the shop. Please advise.
Reread the posts above about how to operate it. You’ll see the gap between where your loco is and the rail in the shed. There’s a moveable section of rail (like a ‘straight turntable’), that needs to be moved to join you up: You can use keyboard or on screen clicking to do this, as discussed above. Presumably this is what you meant, thinking the gap was a ‘blockage’?
Thank you so very much! That is what I meant as 'blockage'. I did not see the posts above as I was using mobile and clicked the notifications. I totally missed those posts until now. Thank you inversnecky and Craigie-C for always being so helpful! You guys along with 749006 are always super-helpful on these boards. Your help is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to complete this scenario after work!
Thanks again guys! I still had time on my lunch break so I went ahead and tried it. This DLC is awesome... and only cost $2.99 Canuckistan Dollars. I wonder if there are other DLCs of similar ilk?
Glad you finally got inside the shed - it's like an Alladin's Cave of goodies in there! One additional note about the traverser - sometimes you move it and the rails don't exactly line up with the ones you are on. I couldn't improve on the alignment, and drove on with no other option, but the loco stayed on and didn't derail.
You are more than welcome, glad we could help. You also did me a favour, Doncaster Works was one of the first DLC I ever bought & I had forgotton how much fun you could have with it. I have since re-visited and re-done all the scenarios again.
