Now that I know what's on the cards for TSW6 it looks like I'm going to need to free up some disk space soon! OldVern mentioned something along the same lines recently - got me thinking, is there anything in TSC that I play regularly enough to miss if I dumped it and went solely with TSW ...? Seems there is ... Just losing the hydraulics (Warship & Hymek, since we've got the Western) is enough But then there's all these classic lines too... ECML London-Peterborough GEML London-Ipswich Liverpool-Man Picc MML - St Pancras-Bedford Berlin Ringbahn Somerset & Dorset South Wales Mainline South Western Expressways Through The Heart Of Berlin WCML North West of Scotland Lines - Port Road Woodhead Blue Can't bring myself to dump it just yet! Anyone else in the same boat?
I'll never dump TSC, it's going to be years before TSW has the same variety of stock to drive and with DTG keeping control of everything payware, we're unlikely to ever see the likes of AP Enhancements in TSW. I really like TSW and after an initial lack of enthusiasm for TSW6, they're actually delivering something I really want. But I spent almost 6 hours this morning tinkering with TSC scenarios and driving Class 50's over Shap and I enjoy that more than repetitive timetable runs in TSW. I'd rather uninstall some of my TSW DLCs or better still just get more disk space.
Same here. I'll never abandon TSC completely. Too much US freight content, steam engines. But I certainly don't play it much anymore and I've actually uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple of times. But there it is in my Steam library, reminding me of the fun I've had with the game over the years, especially the early years, downloading all the free and pay ware from 3rd party websites.
While TSW is beginning to gain more traction and features, as long as 3rd parties continue to develop for TSC, I am sure TSC will always be in the lead although it's antiquated. If all development for TSC stops, TSW will eventually catchup. In 2017, I didn't think TSW would stand a chance against TS20xx/TSC, but in recent years, TSW has been getting better and better. I have a feeling, we'll eventually see all TSC DLC's created for TSW. In my opinion, TSC will always be the most versatile and better sim and somewhat paved the way for TSW
Probably the steam traction and Classic routes I miss but despite having the previously mentioned 290 DLC (Steam alone) there’s stuff I bought and barely played. At least some of that comes from only having a handful of scenarios compared to the all day timetable. Glasgow North West Suburban was an example of that, a mere six scenarios of which only four were with the primary Class 322 EMU. And, while I know it doesn’t matter in the overall scheme of things, you have the Standard scenarios which fail if you pass one objective a bit late, or the Career Scenarios where you lose 5000 points for being 90 seconds late.
TSC was good sim for but not something I don’t play anymore. Scenarios are not really my thing and I don’t play scenarios on TSW. Timetable mode is what draws me to TSW and what keeps me coming back
Different things for different players. I much prefer scenarios. Timetable services for me are just the same thing at different times of day. Although I'm looking forward to these random events that will make them different. That could be a game changer for me. The problem with scenarios for TSW is that creators club is too basic and the editor is too complex. Therefore the usually bland scenarios that come with the route is all you ever get. In TSC, even I can make a half decent scenario or swap the stock around to be what I want.
TSC has good US freight, Us steam and Searchlight Simulations, I don't think TSW will ever get anywhere close to that level of quality content in those areas.
Yes, I agree, TSC has the best US freight for sure along with better payware developers such as Searchlight Simulations and Diesel Workshop. TSW not having an easy to use editor and a lot less US freight is what keeps me coming back to TSC and Trainz22.
I won’t be dropping TSC anytime soon, I’ve got way too much DLC invested in it to just walk away. Since version 5 I’ve been using TSW more and more, and I really enjoy the modern routes. The only downside is that I still struggle with the idea of buying routes again that I already own (and still enjoy) in TSC. I still prefer TSC overall for the sheer amount of stock and locos it offers, but that said, I’m actually using TSW more than TSC at the moment.
I’ve uninstalled TSC just this weekend. After driving 2 bugged scenarios and another when I went from 800 points to minus 3000 points just because I went down the wrong yard siding I finally had enough. I find the game penalises you for minor errors or time delays like the nanny state on steroids. Add to that the super annoying split your freight wagons at wagon x which you do and get a confirmation message you’ve done so, then you drive off again only to find they’ve magically reconnected and you’ve got a 500 points operational error! Bang goes your chance of a gold medal after an hour of driving. I find TSW supremely relaxing to drive whereas TSC drives me nuts a lot of the time. Finally TSC graphics are potatoes compared to TSW, really ugly, especially the jagged lakes and river banks that look like broken glass. Anyone who complains about TSW bugs wants to try TSC because there you will find real scenario breaking bugs. Also I like driving my train by using my mouse to move around the controls, try doing that in TSC smoothly, it’s not possible. Plus of course a lot of the controls I cannot interact with in the older game. No I’m not going to waste any more time in it, I’ve had fun (and a fair bit of frustration), now it’s time to finally move on.
That matches my experience to some extent, Teddy. Not only that, many locos or units in TSC, my first instinct is to open the cab door or window/droplight to admit a bit more thrash in and find you can't. Fixed solid. If the Class 142 Pacer on BPO sounds a tad off in TSW, the one on the TSC version of NTP is ruddy awful. Add to which another one where I don't think you can open the windows. Routes like the JT Met Line are prone to crash the game particularly if loading a save; accompanied by the error message (Try 64 bit", when that's what you were running it in.
I "started" with TSW. My main reason to get a bit of TSC, too, was just to be able to drive a Ludmilla. Until TSW gets one, too that is.
I also forgot about Switch Point Simulations too. Their SD70ACes do so much more, with so much content for FREE, and are easily better than DTGs SD70s that came for Sherman Hill or DLC for Cajon.
I must say that the latest road map is looking very good, i will probably get tsw at some point in the future its just missing some content that i like such as the rest of the hydraulics, cl50 and a deltic.
Never played TSC so can't comment on the main question, but as an aside; if disk space is the issue, invest in a cheap external hard drive?
Tsc is going to be in my library for many years to come. Even if tsw had the same amount of content I'd still be drawn to tsc, though I doubt tsw will ever have the same variety or mileage.
Could say the same about scenarios. Once you do it then nothing new to do.. with TT mode at least depending of time of day could change depending on the mode and weather can be different But as you say it comes down to personal preference
I know, I’ve given up counting the times I’ve invested a long period of time only to find the scenario is impossible to finish because I stopped my service on the wrong part of the orange line apparently, even though my loco is on it, and that damn operational error message comes up again. The separating your freight consist bug is the worst though, I’ve even tried setting the brakes on every single wagon after unhitching before driving off and they still reconnect aargh! and I’m told I’ve committed another operational error. Some scenarios are impossible to complete, even as recent as the Feather River Enhanced route. And what’s all this nonsense about being timed in a freight service and if you’re a few minutes late you get thrashed with a huge penalty - in a freight train! Jeez what the hell difference does that make there’s not some freight inspector standing beside the track checking you and the goods wagons are on time. Unnecessary nonsence. Not my idea of fun. Also the trains are like toys compared to the ones in TSC as you say. Time to move on.
Yeah, same here… thankfully the Warship sounds excellent and the windows and doors work too… probably TSC’s biggest saving grace for me But yeah, time to buy a bigger hard drive…
Today, as a volunteer on a heritage railway, I've seen working a GWR Hall & Pannier, an LMS Mogul and Class 46 and Class 50 diesels. Seeing them in real life makes me want to drive them. I think only the Class 46 exists in TSW. All exist in TSC. That is the problem with TSW.
No, not really. Firstly, there’s just way too much content on TSC that will probably never come to TSW. Secondly, I’ve been working on my own route for a couple of years, and I´m not planing to stop working on it anytime soon. That said, I am liking some of the announcements for TSW 6 and I’ll give it another chance to become my second go-to game. It’s always disappointed me in the past, but I have hopes that stuff like the Riviera Line or the Tadami Line in TSW 6 might actually outshine the old TSC versions and be a real alternative for me. It all depends on personal preference, and that’s totally fine. What’s wrong with running both games anyway? SSDs with lots of space are not expensive these days. No one is debatting if they should scrap TSC in favour of Transport Fever. You can play multiple games =)
I ditched TSC back in 2017 and took a break altogether from railway simulation until 2020 when I got the original TSW. The nail in the coffin for TSC was downloading AP content and then needing a million other little bits to get the bloody scenarios to work. I don't mind a few wagons, but when it's a vast amount of content that was needed just to get them to work I thought... Nah, that's it for me. TSW has caught up for the most part, and one of the things TSW has got right is it not needing vast amounts of content to get timetables to work. If someone wants to have a base route and nothing else, the scenarios and timetable work. If they do have the relevant DLC, it will automatically layer on. But it will work either way. The only downside to TSW for me is sometimes the mileage which can be limited. But overall it is a good experience and a vast improvement overall.
Lots of good points you make. I have spent a huge amount of AP products, like APweather,APclouds, other 3rd party content plus Ann the requirements it takes just to play one scenario. Of coarse would like TSW to have longer routes but the details in scenery and improve drastically overt the years in TSW. Hoping it improves even further in the future
Absolutely not, I also couldn’t get rid of TSC as it’s got three of my favourite routes to ever exist in a train sim. London Kings Cross to Edinburgh, WCML London Euston to Birmingham and the whole Southeastern network. I do own pretty much all the UK routes and stock, but those routes are my most played. I don’t play TSC as much as I’d like to as I get tired from working long hours, TSW hits that itch better sometimes for me as sometimes all I manage is 20-30 TT service before I start dozing off.
That is true, it’s in scenarios where you get the variety. However now with random events the TT is finally going to become more interesting. I always use the Quick Play feature which produces both scenarios and TT runs. I love the randomness.
I should add that I’ve never bought any AP stuff or addons that are not on the DTG steam store page, and most of those I have bought have been in sales, so I’m not that invested in TSC. Hence the decision to retire it has been much easier. I can understand people who have spent a small fortune in addon products needing to keep playing it.
I also haven’t bothered with anything other than that which is available on Steam, enough people have talked about the hassle of finding dependencies. Having just spent a pleasant afternoon yesterday rediscovering some forgotten gems I just ordered a new hard disk. Problem solved
I bought a handful of AP stuff over the years, mainly sound packs but as above I really like everything under the one Steam roof. And not all the AP stuff is super duper. I was never that impressed by the Thumper sounds, even at full power just didn’t have the thrum of the real thing, more like a fast idle. Class 321’s were nice though, apart from the usual daftness of scenarios failing because you were a minute late at one intermediate station.
I only got into TSC after playing TSW, and I only managed 25 hours. Last played in March 2023 and uninstalled for ages. Safe to say I've never really gotten on with it.
TSC has an insane amount of content vs TSW. I can’t see TSW catching up anytime soon neither but it is nice to see TSW slowly growing and evolving over time. I’d say if all your favourite routes from TSC are on TSW then you could probably make that jump and be perfectly happy moving forward. Going by that list you put up you’d probably be better keeping TSC.
I do find myself looking for the functionality that TSW has often in TSC, but then TSW still lacks far too much in the actual route milage & often having a busy route in the latter means you have to put up with layers that vary from inaccurate to outlandish. By far the biggest thing that keeps TSC relevant to me though is the aesthetic. It sounds insane because graphically TSW is obviously superior (mostly), but it’s so clinically sterile. From train interiors to trackbed, the lighting & lack of wear on most routes is pretty bad. In contrast the blander colours of TSC help to camouflage its same issues, not having blown out lighting is a big factor there too.
I dropped TSC four years ago, in April 2021. I haven't played it since, I don't miss it, and I don't think I'll ever play it again. Even though I bought a lot of third-party add-ons, for example from AP. The timetable mode and graphics in TSW are the main reasons why I won't be returning to TSC.
Of course we have to allow for the fact that TSC has been out much much longer so there is bound to be a greater wealth of content. Therein however lies its Achilles heel because a significant proportion of that content is ancient and doesn’t stand up to scrutiny against TSW, so it’s hung by its own petard. I’d rather have less but quality content personally. I don’t want to sit in the cab of a train and look around only to see a great chunk of the outside over my shoulder for example, things like that destroy immersion.
Been a user of TSC since before DTG and a fan of TSW since Sand Patch Grade was released. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and I see them as complementary not competing products. Biggest drawback, as I see it, is the storage requirement which is easily overcome - I have each on their own SSD on a usb 3.2 drive dock. If you enjoy aspects of both, why choose between one or the other when for a relatively low cost one can expand storage and enjoy both.
Storage space is cheap, TSC will likely remain my go to for North American freight for the foreseeable future, though I do spend way more time in TSW.
