I was thinking about this feature when watching one of PGT Rail’s old route learning videos on the Brighton Mainline, and I thought that this could be an interesting idea to explore. I initially thought that junctions and landmark names could be shown on the 2D map, but this would be too inconvenient to use. So I decided that a better idea would be to have a pop-up on the hud that named junctions, stations and other notable landmarks as you are about to pass them as well as relevant distances. This would make much more sense as, with the minimal HUD, there is much more space to play with; this could be toggled in the settings. I think this would be better than just having the upcoming speed limit and signal markers on as it is much more on par with the route learning material that drivers are published with and will provide much more familiarity with the route that you are driving. This could also work in conjunction with the “more advanced loco simulation” that was asked about in the survey. And will be able to engage the more ‘hardcore’ sim fans that are aiming for this level of detail.
This is a good idea, but I think Scenario Planner & Free Roam could be used for realistic Route Learning as real drivers would use man-made things as markers. For example, when I'm approaching Lewes from Eastbourne / Seaford Branch on East Coastway, I use a pedestrian bridge as a marker to let me know I'm not far from Lewes.
