This route is an excellent one with numerous passing sidings, high traffic, and beautiful scenery. In the early to mid 1990s, traffic was exponentially high with numerous intermodals, run through Conrail trains via Hagerstown, the twice daily Triple Crown Roadrailer train in each direction, regular manifests and daily locals out of Powell Yard in Manassas(one of which works on the original end of the branch in Strasburg, Va.). In 1991/1994, the line played host to N&W 611 before it was retired that year and brought back years later & N&W 1218 in one of its last excursions before retirement.
