Since I am a big railroad fan (Captain Obvious says hi ), of course I have made quite the effort to ride every passenger corridor within Vienna and most of S-Bahn lines to at least some extent... aaand during my walks I also discovered some nice spots from which you can watch a lot of different trains safely and without trespassing on any kind of railway property, or without getting in the way of some railway work So here is a short list with brief descriptions on how to get there, if you need more details I can explain in replies (I am assuming Hauptbahnhof is a good default starting spot) Hauptbahnhof - tons of action on platforms 3-12, also 1-2 (S-Bahn and regional platforms), U1 subway, underground tram section of 18, tram D (Hauptbahnhof Ost accessed from D parts of platforms), tram 0... navigation is fairly obvious Kledering: you take any S-Bahn or REX to Wien Mitte, where you transfer to S7 and get off at Zentralfriedhof... from there you can already see catenaries and concrete fence around Kledering... you go there and get to a sidewalk leading onto an overpass... from there you can watch as much as you want, since it is right above the hump and uncoupling platform you can see arriving and departing freight trains, uncoupling, hump action, shunting... and you can also see corridor towards Schwechat and Bruck Westbahnhof Yard: from Westbahnhof you head towards bezirk 15 aka Rudolfheim not from the side that heads towards Schonbrunn but other one... after a bit of walking you get to a steel pedestrian bridge from which you can watch all in and outbound trains for Westbahnhof, towards St. Polten, Salzburg, Munchen and such you can also see tons of more or less vintage/retro OBB stock Siemens/S-Bahn Depot Floridsdorf: from Hbf you take just about any S-Bahn or REX train to Floridsdorf... there you transfer to tram 31 direction Stammersdorf and get off at Bahnsteggasse... you are looking for an overpass over railway, you should see it clearly from there... get to the side thats closer to the depot and at the apex of the overpass it is luxurious views of the depot and parked trains (4744, 4124, 4020s and others), but also of the regional mainline of S2 and other lines/services Wien-Geiselbergstrasse: I believe this station is on the S7 corridor... nearby is Siemens Mobility Facility... so if you are tall enough, you can see some carriages and other stuff in the outside yard and there are of course some more of those, like the one near Raffineriestrasse, Biberhaufenweg, but there you got to take care, cos some of the crossings over one-track unelectrified line to Raffinerie and Olhafen arent exactly well protected against entry (grade crossings with little to restrain you), so you gotta watch for signs/sounds of incoming train... if you are lucky, you can get luxurious video footage of oil tanker trains heading to and from the refinery and such... if I missed any, let me know
Lets add a few to the appreciation. as thumbnail to not take up an entire 5 pages First up is the station of Sussenbrunn. looking at multiple lines and a bridge when you look towards Vienna. in font the station of Leopoldau where the U1 ends and to the left the shunting yard of Gerasdorf. (at night a beautiful walk past the unused tracks at Breitenlee with some freight cars that have been sitting there for the past 10 years and are used for scrap. I am unsure how legal it is so you didn't get that from me) Back to the station. it is just off the yard so apart from leaving and entering trains and some loco shunting you won't see the activities there. but a lot of different passenger stock to be seen. and the occasional railjet. Turning around you see a long straight line towards Gänserndorf and to the left the freight overpass. some very interesting lines to look at and unlike being at Leopoldau you have an unobstructed view as far as the eye can see. Wien Meidling is also a hub of action. Regiojet, all international trains towards Wien Hbf and back. even a DB IC2 passes once in a while. this station is where everything going into Hbf connects and the terminus of some S1 I think. in between Hbf and Meidling there is ÖBB's massive storage yard where you can see a whole collection of trains sitting and moving throughout the day. above Meiding is also a bridge. I haven't seen how good that view is but here a night shot I tried. Not exactly a train but at the tram/U2/U4 stop Schottenring or anywhere else on the tram network there is a small chance to spot these 40 year old trams still driving the normal service next to the modern ones. Special mention if you have a good lens. a certain pole just outside of the town of Sussenbrunn on the bettleheimstrasse looking out at the railway line towards marchegg/gänserndorf.
nice shots here I will give you screenshots of VERY GOOD spots you can take some nice shots also I believe I mentioned them in other comments, but since I was at work lol I didnt have enough time to do those screens spot no.1 - Oberlaa Now, Kledering (you can access this from Zentralfriedhof station or Hasenleiten 72A/B stop, that bus stop isnt serviced on weekends tho): Near Albern, mainly for freight: When walking along Donaukanal, you can get approx to this spot and watch trains go in and out of the bend leading to Praterstern station: A road/sidewalk overpass over the Wolf in der Au station - you can see old Westbahn tracks as well as the bypass/highspeed tracks, so you might see Westbahn Stadler KISS 200s and such going through: And Rustensteg steel bridge over Westbahn approach to Westbahnhof is also a great place If you are feeling adventurous, check out Baden bei Wien station, only two tracks on a viaduct pretty much, but RailJets go BLASTING through at around 140 kmh
