With the latest flap about Bernina, safety systems and consoles fresh in my mind, why can't there be a setting to enable safety systems by default, as per the real world? I understand the need for accessibility, hence why all I'm asking for is an option.

As long as this would be an optional setting, I see no reason to oppose.

I'll use this overused apologetic phrase:

"it's not just ticking a checkbox..."

It may require work (and break things again), so don't expect it to come.

Seeing the issues in Freeroam and that each loco has an individual state it's set to at the beginning, I even doubt it's doable. You'd have to update every single loco in the game for that, just as you need for full freeroam functionality.

This is easy in other simulators, which use consistent setups and APIs for their locos (Zusi, Run8), but not for the non-standardised TSW development.

Yes sir! I hate having PZB/SIFA/LZB off by default and having to run to the other cab or machine room to switch them on. One of the many things that really drives me nuts in TSW.

I actually love flipping switches. (Setting up the cold&dark Apollo capsule in ReEntry takes a few hours :D )

99% of the switches are functional, all circuitry accurately simulated, and you even have to program the board computer realistically.

Many times it causes me to leave late right from the first station...and in real life I don´t enter the cab and switch on the Sifa/Pzb. It´s always on.

There should be a setting in the settings menu where players could set to have sifa & safety systems on or off by default.

    Ctrl+Enter / Shift+Enter takes a second only.

Also, when starting a new service, you must feed the PZB/LZB computer with train data (Tf number, train length, brake type, brake hundredth, vmax), perform a brake test, or log in with your USB stick when taking over a train. The issue is TSW doesn't give you enough time as it's not that deep of a simulation like Zusi, so yes, an option is the answer. But I doubt it'll come, seeing how TSW is built.

I actually did not know that! Thanks...

When you start out in the sidings first thing.... but not when your taking over at the plattform. Just put in your driver number. What is the case most times in TSW.

Yep, Zusi has an option to manually enter train data or automatically set up PZB/LZB.

Some Locos in TSC also can do this ... like the Vectron and BR 186 bei K-Trains. By the way, I´m a driver in Germany. I don´t need lessons on PZB =)

Nobody can smell that :) but as it's a public discussion there may be someone who finds stuff like that helpful.

I'm a sim only driver, but my cousin was a Tf and Fdl for Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft. Had to quit due to a burn out though (he said dispatching with the old and wacky 70s Siemens systems, you always had one foot in jail :D )

What I’m really asking for is Ctrl+Enter and Shift+Enter (optionally) by default. Ok, not difficult to do yourself (if you have a keyboard) and not necessarily exactly like real life, but it would make things somewhat more realistic.

For me it comes down to whether or not this is a simulation. These systems are always on in the real world, and in a proper simulation that should also be the case.

DTG’s blah reasoning that ‘it might be hard for the casual players’ points, in my opinion, to where this game is more weighted. These systems should default to on, and you should have to hit Ctrl / Shift + Enter to disable them, not the other way around. It should, of course, have been an option in the menu from day 1.

What’s happened with Rivet was always going to happen at some point, and a consequence of poor design decisions early on in the game’s development.

I don't actually know what they think but I suspect you're probably right, which is kind of the lens I see things through when I play and when I participate in these discussions. The fact that console sales outstrip those on PC by some considerable margin (I think I read that somewhere!) would also feed into this idea. I don't think it's unintentional that you hear DTG refer to 'the game' and not 'the sim' on their streams, and I've noticed that Matt is particularly precise in his use of language, but that could just be me reading things into it now that I'm thinking about it.

I suggested this a while back for the « expert mode ». Seems silly not to have them on if you’re going to call it that!

So your reply was superfluous. Or were you just trying to temper my expectations?

    Your supposition is silly.

You've opened a discussion thread and I gave my thoughts on your questions which was "why can't there be a setting to enable safety systems by default".

In which way would my answer be superfluous? What would be the correct answer to why there can't be a setting according to you? Is that thread a quiz then?

You can still post it in form of a suggestion in the Suggestion subforum if you don't want an open discussion.

Really wonder what's up with some folks in here... Nothing more to say on this topic.

Because you didn't actually address the point that was made, you just used it as an excuse to drip some (more) poison about some of the things about TSW that upset you, and have a dig at the people who might not be aligned with your point of view. We should leave that for 'enough is enough'! I apologise if I've misunderstood your motives but that's how it comes across to me.

(It would be a shame if this thread got closed because you and I are bickering.)

You started that, I gave a purely technical assessment as to why I think it's not. Whatever you make of that is not my responsibility. But I'll stay away from you, it already smells toxic. ;)

I've exactly adressed your question. Don't see any poison dripping, it's just as things are. I never had any "dig" at anyone not aligning with my opinion. It's more of the opposite actually, on display right now. I have a problem with people making suppositions as you are doing now, trying to attack me as you started your game in post #20. You could have DM'd me directly if you want to discuss personal disagreements and not the topic.

I have no idea what started this, and I'm not interested in finding out.

That is urban myth. No one has ever shown the merest shred of evidence to back it up yet it’s become the new ‘truth’. It goes without saying that PC also has other options, not least of which is another DTG product.

It’s interesting that in the FS2020 world many people are buying PCs having played the game (and I use that word as it is the ‘gaming’ industry, I don’t read anything at all in to the use of ‘game’ over ‘sim’) on the XBOX because they’ve seen that the PC is a VASTLY superior experience. Night and day in fact. Consoles are great at what they do and the Gen9 consoles are impressive at their price point. Do they stack up against a modern PC when it comes to gameplay experience? Not even close, but then that’s another subject.

That the safety systems are defaulted to off is ridiculous frankly, it always has been.

It was either DTG Protagonist or DTG Matt that said it on a stream when TSW2 was still a thing. The split between Xbox, Playstation and Steam was one third each.

Exactly, no evidence to back it up other than they said it in a throw away comment. Since then it’s been regurgitated time and again as fact which it’s anything but. Given it’s highly convenient that the sales were supposedly split evenly between each platform then I’d take it with a very large pinch of salt.

Either way, it’s off topic. Safety systems on or off should always have been an option in the menu. Without that they should default to on and require turning off if you wish not to use them. Don’t even get me started on the woeful tutorials that have never once even mentioned safety systems!

I would imagine that with TSW3 in GamePass the numbers on XBox had been higher possibly. On the other hand on PC since TSW4 I do believe the numbers have gone down. Steam Charts / Stats indicates that and also the market has changed. Their are more rivalry products on PC now then two years ago.

Asking whether it sold better on console or not while interesting to think about isn't the right question to ask. The better one to be asking why would DTG think that it being on console would mandate it in anyway to be aimed at casuals or not? You don't need to make a game "casual" to be on console, it's just as varied market on console just like PC. Hell, Dark Souls, the game which became infamous for its high difficulty and lack of difficulty options is a console game.

How hard would it to be to check by the game whether safety systems aren't already turned on and send the events enabling them (the same as Ctrl+Enter and Shift+Enter) when a train is being taken over by the player when the global setting for it is set?

It would be more a workaround method than the proper implementation, but it should work, just like pressing Shift+Enter and Ctrl+Enter right after taking over the train, but without the need for using a keyboard.

not a bad idea, since in some locos, especially control cabs, sometimes the switches for safety systems are pretty well hidden :D

    Hello everyone,

I wanted to share that we see the discussion above regarding Safety System settings, regarding Bernina Line - we've just announced that we've been able to address the safety system functionality so that in-cab controls will work for enabling / disabling Vigilance and Safety systems, so console players will be able to utilise the functionality.

    Read our latest announcement: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/bernina-line-safety-systems.77935/

Well it would also have to change it to PZB M/U for freight runs. 143 always defaults to PZB O, and R brakes.

Not long ago, we were asked to vote for the game in the ¨Hold back and relax¨ category.
Of course, complex simulators can find their place there too when they offer various levels of engagement to the players according to their desire.
I feel like TSW offers the laid back option but not not the same can be said about the ¨expert¨ one.
The forum in between the yearly launches can serve as a great place to collect features which can be used to convince players to buy again... ;)

I never even considered to vote it to be nominated there. The game simply isn't "hold back and relax", unless you play as a passenger (or if you turned on LZB/AFB and turned off Sifa). You need to pay attention when you drive.

Flight Simulator was nominated too because it is prepared for all tiers of players.
TSW is not as well prepared and this is why people are asking here to make a step towards players that expect more form a sim.
From the weather and lighting sudden changes (they scared me a few times to be honest) to the steam engine simulation. All is done in a very light way and there is no solution/expectation to even make it realistic.

It's interesting, I definitely need to concentrate to play properly but I find it strangely relaxing at the same time (except for PZB!). I think it's because it's a different kind of concentration from what I do for my job and my main pastimes.

I agree with the op. The safety systems should be on by default as an option. If I take over a ICE train at Koln or Aachen, the safety systems would be on in reality so I don't see why they should be off. It's just unrealistic to have to turn them on manually when in many cases, they would be on in reality due to many of the routes not being self contained

I can't remember them describing Train Simulator as a simulator though, so I don't think it's a TSW thing. To be fair though, I don't consider each other a simulator and I think it's an inappropriate way to describe them. Zusi is far closer to an actual simulator (the version available on Steam is a home use version of actual train software, which I would describe as a simulator.
In relation to this, what are the ZS and SISTE buttons supposed to do in real life? I remember in the previous update about the issue that buttons would be repurposed to accommodate the feature.

This could be left to be done by the driver, since there always needs to be working a knob/button for it - otherwise you won't change it, unless there actually is also an universal key shortcut changing them.

Then you still need to go back, deactivate PZB, change it to M and then activate it again. It's right next to the other switches, anyway.

That's apparently a game thing. IRL you can't deactivate PZB (or rather, aren't allowed to, except in exceptional circumstances)

Well, you can switch it off, if it's defect. Means a vmax of 50 km/h though, and less depending on weather conditions. Driving on sight. But you can, when stationary, enter train data again as shown in the above video.

How would it be inappropriate to call tsw a sim when DTG keep advertising it as such?

  48. AtherianKing

    AtherianKing Guest

that’s the issue, their are those that don’t think TSW qualifies as a sim for various reasons, DTG regardless advertises it as a sim and regardless of how they often refer to it, it’s right there in the name of the game

edit: grammar (a recent IOS update has made typing/spelling way more difficult)
