The only problem with this is Fife Circle covers the route through to Markinch from Edinburgh.

Since Fife Circle covers Edinburgh to Markinch as jack#9468 has said above, you could be better off doing Dundee to Aberdeen as you have some nice scenery along the coast (I'm saying this as it is my local line) :).

This would make a perfect BR Blue route, Class 40’s and 47”s running along the coast, also give a reason to bring a 26 or 27 in the game.

Would Markinch - Aberdeen be too long do you think? If only that segment is left out, it's almost certain that gap will remain to the end of days.

I think markinch to Aberdeen would be good. Or as an extension to fife circle. Mainly due to the amazing approach from the south east entrance to Dundee. (The Tay Bridge.)
