The Edinburgh - Carlisle line is a combination of lines that include Glas-Edb (via Carstairs) and the WCML between carstairs jcn and carlisle. Spanning at about 101 miles, this is a long route but would allow for inclusion of trans pennine services that work this route everyday.
The WCML is an arterial mainline that links 6 of the uks largest cities by rail, it spans 400 miles and is the one of the principle railways for scotland and england linking London with Glasgow. It has branches and loops to birmingham, manchester, liverpool, shewsbury and holyhead along with a branch to edinburgh that goes via the carstairs line.

The Edinburgh - Glasgow (Carstairs line) is one of the 4 principle intercity routes that link the cities of edinburgh and glasgow together, with the carstairs line being the most southern, the Edinburgh - Glasgow (carstairs) line is served by Avanti West Coast, LNER, Trans Pennine Express, Cross Country, The Caledonian Sleeper and Scotrail.

If I'm not mistaken, the TPE Class 802 operates primarily on the East Coast from Edinburgh Waverley? The Class 397 makes sense as these only run the Glasgow/Edinburgh to Manchester Airport services where the full route is electrified via the WCML.
