The network consists of approximately 100 miles (160 km) of track, serving the vast 2,000-acre site, though doing all of it is probably impractical. The railway is essential for moving raw materials like iron ore and coal. Crucially, it is used to transport torpedo wagons filled with molten iron from the blast furnaces to the steel-making plant. The site has direct links to the national rail network, allowing British Steel to export finished products (like the 100-meter long rails they supply to Network Rail) and receive bulk deliveries In addition to shunting services and freight transfers, heritage railtours are run by the Appleby Frodingham Railway - Scunthorpe (AFR-S) volunteer-run organization.
