I noticed something today in TSW3 which I’m pretty sure wasn’t in TSW2. If you go into the game settings, general settings, you can actually downgrade the resolution from 4K to HD (1080p). I tried it out and it seems to make the game run smoother. Looks worse but runs smoother. That said I don’t really have any issues with how it performs at 4K… some slowdowns but overall good. To me it wouldn’t be worth the visual downgrade. But for people that care more about performance you can try that setting and see if it helps you. I know that the PS5 has an option in the main settings to drop down to 1080p but my understanding is that one doesn’t change performance because it still renders the game in 4K but downscales it for 1080p TVs. This in game setting actually drops the game resolution.
You're correct that the main PS5 settings don't change the internal rendering resolution and thus won't effect performance. There's been quite a few threads about DTG adding both a 4k and HD mode and it's a really good thing! Most titles are doing this now a days and giving users the options to adjust performance to their liking is awesome. I'd still love to see a 1080p mode that takes advantage of the performing overhead not for better FPS but for higher visual fidelity, giving us three options. 4k prioritizing resolution, HD prioritizing frames and HD prioritizing fidelity.
Playstation 5 is not optimized enough. Bad performance in certain areas. The 4k or hd makes no difference to performance.
I tend to agree with this. The main performance issue withe the game is the stuttering issue and that is more of a memory issue than GPU or CPU if I remember right. I think the lower resolution mode is for minor framerate drops which is not that much of an issue if you have a VRR capable tv
We always had the 4K/HD option on the Xbox Series S and the Xbox One X but there were a lot of requests to make it available on other platforms too so we put it on all the gen9 platforms. Unlike the internal console options, this option DOES change the internal rendering resolution of the game and results in significantly lower GPU load, along with better or more consistent framerates (at the expense of inferior visuals) it likely also reduces the power draw of the game too. If you are running on a 1080p TV and your console is set to 1080, then setting the game to 4K means it will render a 4K image and then downscale it to 1080p resulting in a clearer image but at the 4K framerate essentially. If you are running on a 1080p TV and your console is set to 1080, then setting the game to 1080 means it will render a 1080 image which is much faster to do (literally just a lot less data to move around), no downscaling needed, better/smoother framerates, but without the benefit of the extra data from the 4K shot the anti aliasing is not as good and the picture quality is reduced. Some people prefer fluid framerates, some prefer the stunning clear visuals of 4K, so this is just about giving you the choice. Matt.
With this in mind Matt, how about adding a middle ground for the internal rendering resolution of...whatever the halfway house between 1080p and 4k is (I don't do maths) or would that cause issues with deformed pixels, assuming a 4k output?
