I have linked the signals to the track and then I start the route timetable. I step into the cockpit when I have to leave, the signal remains red. What step could I have missed?"

Your service hasn't started yet. To have your service start immediately upon loading, click your service in the timetable and select "Create after delay".

Signals only get reserved for a service when that service has started.
