this is the problem I am currently experiencing. When I try to open the train door by first pressing x to bring up the menu then selecting the options to open the door and pressing A nothing happens so I have to use my mouse to click on it to open. What can I do to fix that?

I doubt there's a lot of players in here that use a controller other than a RailDriver in a sim... but maybe there's someone who can help you on that.

As you also have a Keyboard the shortcut in normally T to open the doors

I use an X-Box controller (solely) but I find pressing "T" to open and close doors faster and easier than using the X-Box settings. If "T" is not the default option then I find it still easier to use the appropriate keyboard mappings (eg some AP mappings for certain trains).
With certain AP DLC you may also get this message: Please note, this pack is NOT compatible with any external controllers such as the XBOX or RailDriver.

Is this a problem on certain trains or universally? As Peter said, some content will have limited or no support for Xinput controllers. DTG trains seem to support it consistently so you might want to try it. I used to play with a controller myself when my keyboard had an Azerty layout which made playing the game a bit more difficult without custom input mappers.

I would just use T to open it. It’s crazy everything else works when I use my Xbox controller for the other features

    It Is Not Crazy

The coding applies to trains made in the early days of this game and that was before 2010.
And it was not made for X-Box controllers - you are lucky that some features work but not all.

If you cannot operate the game with a Keyboard like most users I suggest you try TSW as that game was made for people with Eggs-Boxes
