Hi all on the service Through Freight: Edgehill - Nuneaton 8:20am I'm unable to finish the service the final stop marker is beyond a 2.7% uphill gradient and I cannot get the train up the hill no matter what I try I can't make it up the hill I been struggling with steam trains and uphill gradients I don't know what I'm doing wrong
A tutorial or reference guide on maintaining/accelerating when going up a gradient would be helpful I've still not got a clue how to work the reverser properly and what steam chest pressure I should be aiming for.
I know i literally cannot get the train up the 2.7 gradient I don't know if it's a bug with the train or consist or if it's something I'm doing wrong most probably something I'm doing wrong I don't understand
Hey folks, sorry to hear you're having issues. This may help - we made a special part of the tutorial video for inclines. Also, make sure in settings your fireman is set to 'automatic', rather than 'assisted'.
I did make it up the gradient by making sure I was going atleast 20mph before hitting the incline lost a lot of speed but made it up lol
I think I had similar if this was the 627t train. My solution, a few more lumps of coal and start that hill at about 27mph rather than 20mph. I don’t think the kettle will drag it up at line speed.
I did make it up the gradient going at around 20 I think and it managed to make it up the hill with a few mph to spare idk if it's a bug or working as intended lol
Slow and steady indeed CrAzZyKiLLa New drivers might find my SoS tutorials handy https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWi4sYR9zXqW1okI5gA-BtHLf2g0f47YQ
Your tutorials have been great! Thank you! With regard to 'braking without derailing' do you have any suggestions for what to do differently if braking on a down gradient? That seems to be my difficulty as gravity is making things much more difficult.
Yes definitely with the Jubilee and the Mk1's you can probably brake however you like. With the 8F you need to be gentle, I generally apply to about 10-15% and wait for that to take effect - like a real train it takes about 15-20 seconds for this to start happening then you can slowly increase your braking about 10% at a time about 10 seconds apart afterthe wagons have all bunched up from the first application. This is especially important for "unfitted" stock - the grey mineral wagons as they have no brakes at all. Only the loco is braking when they are attached behind it. I am glad the tutorials are helpful. Paul
It just seems a bit harsh my first time on this service I had to restart as no matter what I couldn't get up and to lose so much speed too but I'm sure in time I'll get better at judging I'm just not so sure it should be struggling as much as it is but I don't know enough bout steam to make that call so I won't even attempt lol
Just checked your tutorial out and it definitely extremely helpful you earned yourself a subscriber and ill certainly be checking all your tutorials thanks for providing them
I'm very glad you found it useful, thank you for saying. Its comments like these that give me the encouragement to make more. Paul
driving steam locos is not easy which is why drivers and fireman spend years progressing through the grades. Also check out the dev livestreams, even they struggle :P
